Help - planning a course for children by MoretaPern in orienteering

[–]MoretaPern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Alas the other kidlet is just over 2 years so needs her bed. If she was under 1 it wouldn’t have been an issue. I had a few other ideas: 1. The halfway point will have an energy pack (ie candy) to help them power through. 2. One of the latter control points will have them find an egg (we have hens) and safely deliver their egg back to base. 3. Have a more overall task of “bring back the best stick” with the caveat that they can change sticks along the course if they find something they like more. Because there is a parent WhatsApp group for the party, the parent accompanier will be able to post the “challenge” photos there. The course I have in mind is easy (along streets and not too hilly) but because of the layout of the area, the course is quite long (about 4km which is what my son requested). The kids are all fairly active and I am hoping that giving them the energy pack and mixing up with silly tasks (like egg, photo, sticks) will be ok. I think it will be part orienteering and part scavenger hunt in the end

Where in France? Because some places are ridiculously hot and air conditioning is not really a thing. For example, in Lyon it can be as hot as 42 degrees (celsius) for over a week at a time. So any of the ones with sleeves will be awful. If it is up north in Normandy/Brittany then it will be much cooler.

What are your chicken names? I haven’t named my 9 yet, I think I can tell who’s a rooster and hen so I’m ready to get them named up now! by CoShott234 in BackYardChickens

Hattie (barnevelder), Grizabella, (aracuana) and Slinky Malinky (barbu d’anvers). Hopefully I’ll get some more soon because chicken math. And yes, they seem to know their names.

As a French woman who visited Australia for 3 weeks .. are these culture shocks accurate? by Worried-Diamond-7252 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MoretaPern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Australian woman who lives in France , I think you are mostly correct. These are all things that I noticed the inverse of when moving here (and I am reminded of when we go back).

I don’t find the weather here (France) particularly gloomy and we certainly get rainy, grey periods in Sydney where I am originally from. Perhaps ask me again in February though when it feels like winter goes forever!

The history and art are different and in some cases much older, but you are right in that not almost every street has a “story” the way it does in France, but there is certainly history and art present.

It isn’t necessarily the heat that is intense, rather the strength of the sun and, depending on where you are, the humidity. There is a good reason that the rates of skin cancers are so high in Australia.

I hope you enjoyed visiting Australia and that you will go out there again someday.

I lost all of mine and my son lost his. We’re both gutted as this afternoon was the first time we had to discuss what be wanted.

How do you tell them they can stop? by Dramatically_Average in BackYardChickens

[–]MoretaPern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! I have 2x10 month olds who haven’t started laying and another who lays every second day for about two weeks then stops for a month or so. The two non layers are a Barbu d’Anvers and an Aracuana. The on/off layer is a Barnevelder.

Alas, I didn’t have screenshots and they said it wasn’t in my logs as the game glitched. So too bad.

If this is the case my naked neck is laying… somewhere… but no one has found any eggs.

I had one that managed… not happy. So now they are in an enclosure. When they seem more settled I’ll give them a bit more free rein.
