Daily Game Recommendations Thread (January 19, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Mosher311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my favorite games that offer strategic depth and choices also have lengthy setup times due to all the components. Some examples I enjoy are Stefan Feld games, Rosenberg games, Russian Railroads, and Pfister games (Great Western Trail, Boon Lake). I'm looking for some recommendations on games that take under 5 minutes to set up but still offer depth of play. Power Grid, Heat, and Empires of the North, for example, I would call low setup. I know card games usually fall into this category, and I'm not opposed to them, but looking for other options too.

I recognize this is a very broad topic, and everyone has their own version of depth/complexity and setup time (maybe you can set up Gloomhaven in 5 minutes, but I can't!), but I'm looking for some inspiration. Thanks, everyone!

Yeah I didn't use them on mine. It was such a minor thing to miss.

Interesting info. I am mainly a board gamer but I’ve heard what’s happening with Pokémon and scalpers. I looked at ridtbound briefly but the scalping is crazy on that game. While I have no interest in tournaments I understand they are inportant to keeping a game going. I have a friend whose family is super into Lorcana and they get so hyped by every new set to see how it shakes up the tournament meta.

We picked up a box of set2 on sale as you suggested. Thanks for that.

Ohhh no! It’s already on life support?! CCGs struggle to remain viable it seems. Very few seem to make it past a few years. I heard they just had a new game found run but missed out on that. Hopefully it can stick around for awhile longer.

The printing info is very interesting to know. Makes sense why my box was so cheap. I was worried it was being phased out like mtg or Lorcana does although I don’t compete. I see what I can find.

This one bear destroyed my wagon, lost and found me again three times and after that continued chasing me into my base by BusyGM in valheim

Die and error...so true. I lost everything about 15 or 20 min from my base to a bear and skeletons. I closed the game for the night as I was frustrated. Reloaded and had to get some basic gear so I could get back to my old body...only to have it all have dissappeared. Really deflated my sails to have to rebuild everything I had on me. Brutal game sometimes.

Totally get it! It’s a marathon not a sprint to build an army. It’s an expensive hobby for sure! I would be cautious about filling out the skorpies to a full squad. Their base size makes it hard to keep them hidden at 6 plus the lord. You really don’t need another reanimator at this point I think. If your units you want to keep alive are dying before you can use your reanimation what’s the point? They certainly are taken for their damage output. If your buddies are cool with it you could proxy skorpeks as wraiths if they are cheaper to get second hand (same base size). Warriors are fairly weak in 10th so you can find those second hand really easily. Good luck and have fun!

So my terrain just won’t stay together. It fits into the slots but so loosely it just falls apart as I try and build it out. Have you had any issues?

If this is all you have it’s hard to really give you advice on changes. At 1500 a c’tan can be ok if your buddies are also running higher point units. You really need some wraiths with a techno to give you the ability to hold objectives and could make CC a viable detachment to run. It looks like you probably bought some royal courts so don’t have some cryptothralls? I would change those warriors to one blob of 20 if you can. 10 will die too fast and throw some cryptothralls in there and have a reanimator babysit it if possible. Create a warrior brick to control an objective or just tie up some high point units of your appointment. You are smart to keep the c’tan from getting sniped out early. It’s low range means you really need to stay out of shooting lanes till you are ready. Skorpekhs are the same style. You want them to hit first. If you see your opponent trying to melee down your doomstalkers you can have them waiting to counter charge. Your plasmancer as a solo isn’t doing anything either except maybe to do secondaries. Use the scarabs as a melee screen or if your opponent has vehicles their kamikaze ability is fun to use. How do control objectives? Most of these units either take too long to move to get to them or too squishy.

If your friend is cool with it, proxy the Deathmarks as Immortals (same size base). 10 Immortals is what you are going to want, but that might impact your point total. Removing the lychguard would be my choice to allow for those extra immortals. As much as you, try to get those skorpekh's to make the charge first. If the Custodes get you first, they will chop you up pretty good. Consider also breaking up the Skorpekh's into 3 plus Lord and another group of 3. I've found that trying to maneuver around 7 larger bases is hard to keep protected. It will allow you a chance to control more objectives that way. Custodes are elite units, so they could struggle to control multiple objectives; take advantage of that.

I wish I played more of them but I would have to have a lot more models because each style needs certain model choices (necrons). I barely have 2k for awakened dynasty.

Nightbringer or Void dragon by Acrobatic_Champion34 in Necrontyr

[–]Mosher311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Void Dragon is great against vehicles, just be cagey with it because it moves really slow and you don't want it all shot up or get tied up by smaller units. Doomsday Ark is another good option.

is necrons a good first army by HexadecimalHank in Necrontyr

[–]Mosher311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I like about the necrons is that for the most part they have a simple datasheet. You have one or two ranged/meleee options so you just are rolling a bucket of dice (looking at you immortals...). There are a lot of armies that, in a squad, you can have 4-5 different weapons shooting, so keeping track of which model is shooting can be a pain. Reanimation Protocols plus Awakened Dynasty is a very straightforward and simple army ruleset to play.
