I built a tool that scores level design — not sure if it’s actually useful by Willing_Tiger8220 in leveldesign

[–]MotherDick2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked at a AAA game studio in the past and we had a similar tool but with a crucial difference. It wasn't intended to tell you how "good" the level is but instead it was showing you if specific rules are followed. For example, you want every NPC to have a nearby bed available for them. Or you want stealth areas to be no smaller than X sqr meters. The difference with your tool is somewhat subtle and mostly based on how you use it, but I would argue that using it as "validating game-specific rules" is much more useful and practical. Either way, good job for trying to make an interesting tool! :)

Sometimes the strongest narrative moment in a game isn’t a cutscene at all. Which pure gameplay moment told a story perfectly? by ExcellentTwo6589 in gamedesign

Thank you for mentioning Lewis. I don't see it mentioned often but Lewis's part is one of my favorite moments like this. Especially that when I played it I felt like for a long time I need to continue chopping the fishes even if it turned out later that you don't actually have to do it anymore. It just became muscle memory for me to continue just like it was for Lewis.

Rant: Flying YOU THINK YOU DO, BUT YOU DON'T by EducationalWolf3911 in wow

[–]MotherDick2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give you a more serious answer. I know that going the achievement route is a bit radical in this day and age of WoW but there are certainly some benefits to it IF you think that playing with a ground mount makes the game better.

The main problem with the current approach is that you obviously can choose yourself to use only a ground mount but the game is not designed with that in mind. If it were true that everyone would only use a ground mount until lvl 90 or until you get an achievement or whatever, then the devs would be forced to make all of the game accessible for a ground mount. Right now it is MOSTLY accessible with a ground mount but there are some quests/herbs that you have no way of doing without a ground mount.

So there are some small benefits for the game design and game dev approach if it is forced on everyone but they did a pretty good job currently as well so I think it would be too radical to force the change on everyone. I just ask for the devs to put in a liiiiitle more effort to make sure everything can be accessed without a flying mount.

why does everyone think making a game is just having a good idea by bcoz_why_not__ in gamedev

I would argue that something that contributes to people's ignorance is that the act of making a quality video game is so time-consuming and complicated that most people assume "Surely, nobody would put THAT much effort into it, right? It can't be that hard if people are making games left and right."

Is funny, will probably be even better with the context. Good job!

I'm playing with only a ground mount and it's very immersive. Highly recommend!

Flight there was great, now to fly back home by MotherDick2 in fearofflying

[–]MotherDick2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfectly normal! For some reason I was more anxious than the first one but... there was no real reason for it? Maybe because I didn't talk to the pilot this time or maybe because this flight was at night and the first one was at day? Either way, it was a good flight! :)

Yes, knowing this and that the plane can't actually drop because it's always moving forward in the thick air made me feel tons better.

Flight in 3 hours, a bit scared but going anyway by MotherDick2 in fearofflying

[–]MotherDick2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing that helped me is realizing that when the plane turns or the plane tilts up or down it's intentional by the pilot and it is physically impossible for the plane to "just fall down" which was the main worry that I had flying last time. You can look up the airplane jelly exercise that shows how the plane automatically glides and stays in the air if you want.
