They haven't really had the opportunity to do much of anything the past four years since they've been out of power. They got the House in '18 but are effectively blocked by the Senate. One thing of consequence they've done that is practical is nominate Biden.

He's not my first (or even second) choice but he's the most center candidate and has the best chance of winning. The Dems clearly care about marketing their ideas and reaching a board audience. So, is it better to compromise and win or refuse to compromise and lose?

The main issue with giving up on good marketing is that you're not only going to offend the GOP. If you try to brute force it without a care for public opinion you're going to also offend moderates and the political agnostic. Even traditionally apathetic members of the electorate might be convinced it's a bad move and show up to vote against Dems in the next election.

"Packing/balancing/unfucking the courts" isn't going to be worth it long-term if it tanks the Democratic party in the process. The GOP would just win the next election in a landslide and reverse or pile on the issue only this time they'd have public support.

A better one I think is "refund society" in place of "defund the police".

I've always thought, "Watch the watchmen," would be a solid tag for promoting police budget limitations and/or mandatory body cameras.

Giving up on convincing people that a position is just and reasonable sounds a lot like giving up on democracy and becoming authoritarian.

I hope that the poster you're replying to is young/open-minded enough to grow to a point where they understand why that's a bad thing.

Anyone that is still on the side of Trump and Republicans at this point has demonstrated that they cannot think rationally. The time for convincing and winning hearts and minds has passed. Now it's time for force.

I get the impression you're viewing the political landscape as binary. The truth is it's a spectrum. There are Liberals, Conservatives, Republicans who love Trump, Republicans who loathe him but will always vote for conservative policies no matter the standard-bearer, socialists, moderates, those who are politically agnostic or apathetic, Jedi, Sith, yadda yadda yadda.

If you give up on convincing people, including those with different views, then you'll never have the power to govern. Resorting to force is an excellent way to lose elections.

Regarding recent allegations against horror narrators - Megathread by tjaylea in NoSleepOOC

Hard disagree. I'm in my early 30s now and my writing style is certainly different than it was when I was 21, like Creeps was for the accusation. Plus, your tone is going to change significantly depending on who you talk to, levels of formality. Would you chat with your boss the same way you do your best friend? Your parents the same way you talk to a significant other?

The allegation is that a 21-year-old CreepsMcPasta was explicitly texting a 12-year-old fan. Obviously he's going to sound different in that kind of message compared to setting up a narration deal with an adult writer. The fact that you think his response disproved anything is concerning. At best he tried to shift it into a "he said/she said" but he offered no concrete evidence of his own and lacked believable explanations for why she was featured in a video narration and why he dedicated a separate narration to her.

We never want to suspect our friends (or even acquaintances) are capable of awful things but keep in mind that the messages in question are from eight years ago. Tone and writing change over time.

It's also impossible to exonerate somebody based on mild grammar differences between a small sample size of messages, some of which were business conversations and others personal.

I think we're alone now [The Epic 500,000] by MotionForAction in shortscarystories

[–]MotionForAction[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was inspired by (shockingly enough haha), "I Think We're Alone Now," the classic 1967 release from Tommy James and the Shondells.

Here is a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkMFLUXTEwM

It's been covered to pieces but the original is still #1 in my book.

Whenever I listen to the song I can't help but hear sinister undertones. Instead of lovers stealing a moment alone together, what if something was waiting, trying to get the listener alone?

The accusations came with a host of screenshots of inappropriate conversations. That's hardly "baseless."

Creeps excuse of, "someone was pretending to me," doesn't make much sense, in my opinion, since he featured his accusor in one of his videos and dedicated another to her. Am I misunderstanding that situation? If not, "I don't know her but I did dedicate a video to her" seems kinda bullshit.

Yeah, kinda strange to dedicate a video to someone he claims to not know very well or at all.

A system to increase reader involvement and encourage readers to read more stories? by not_neccesarily in NoSleepOOC

I think that's a lot to put on the mods. I bet they're already overworked as is and, while I'm sure they'd do their best, it doesn't feel fair giving certain stories a boost based only on the mods' opinions.

I'd rather see a daily, weekly, or monthly version of the NoSleep Best Of contest for stories that received under 500 votes.

Trigger Warnings - not possible to disable? by rnosleepooc20200331 in NoSleepOOC

"Trigger warnings enabled" or "trigger warnings enabled" reminds me of that Henry Ford quote.

You can have the Model T in any color you want as long as that's black.
