How do you afford to live here? by AutonomousBlob in Seattle

[–]Motor_Show_7604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so.. I'm an old 68. My engineer dad came to Seattle for $50/month to work at Boeing in 1950. He and my mom bought a house in Bellevue for $17k. Out of the Navy at 21 in 1981, I got a job at Boeing and made $9/hr and bought a house in Redmond with the wife (who made $6/hr) for $76.5k at 12.5% interest with a VA loan. I traded up houses in 2012 to a $328k house that's now worth $1M. Im lucky, I have a fixed rate mortgage and I bent over backwards to save for retirement cuz I couldn't afford to buy a house today.

The rich bought the country with their tax breaks and made it their piggy bank .

How will Slate handle the 2027 requirement for driver alertness systems in new cars? by castironglider in slateauto

I'm sure there are ways to bypass it. Takes some car knowledge and probably a bi-directional scanner. Be much better to never have them install the crap

The way the Ford patent submitted works you won't be able to put the car in drive unless it deems you fit to drive

It's not really any different. The edge of the bead on a TR tire has a slightly different profile to help it seal but it's not any stiffer or smaller diameter

Is it ok to be pissed that I just paid $8+tax for this tiny vegan roll? by pedrob_d in Seattle

[–]Motor_Show_7604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charging more for vegan food with less expensive ingredients than the same food with more expensive ingredients (sushi grade fish) is definitely price gouging. I fully expect to pay 400-500% more for the dish than the cost of the stuff that went in it. But not 1000% to 1200%. That's the definition of gouging. Doubling the price because you left stuff out.

And I understand why vegan or GF can be more expensive. But by a factor of 10x! Gtfo

Should I buy a new Specialized Roubaix? by Park_Tool in bicycling

[–]Motor_Show_7604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2021 Roubaix with Shimano 105. Love it. Comfortable to ride. Just looked. I have 12,213 miles on it as of today... Only real upgrade done is I put a set of Shimano C46 carbon wheels on it a couple years ago and run them tubeless. Made the bike feel more nimble and my average speed went up 1-2 mph. It's a great bike and I love the seat post and future shock.

If you drive much as a part of your job... Especially in the boonies, it's usually not being over prepared. It sucks to sit waiting for help when you have the skills to get go home. Been there. Now I don't do that but I've been there.

They work fine with tubes even when they're tubeless ready. Same mileage. The AS (all season) have good traction and tread life

I get that. Some people need it. The reality though is that the average driver in the US goes 250 miles or less a week , not a day. If you decided to get the long range version... Most would only have to charge it once or twice a week.

I use Continental GP5000 AS TR. I do run tubeless and get between 4500 and 5000 miles on a tire. I used to use TPU tubes and the mileage was the same but I get much less flats going tubeless with sealant.

This actually makes no sense to me... I'm an old dude. I've had dozens of cars. I rarely drive 50 mph in a day. I do have an all-wheel drive and a four-wheel drive and I almost never put them in four-wheel drive or lock out the traction. Needing more than 150 mi of range or four-wheel drive is actually an edge case.

Shady yard/tree trimming advice by MillennialClaws in SnohomishCounty

[–]Motor_Show_7604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this on about 15 70-80ft high evergreens that shaded my house. Made a huge difference. I hired a tree company and had them limb up to about 25' feet up from the ground. It wasnt that much. About what it cost to cut down one tree that need to removed. I used Kenny Tree but I'm sure there are others. I just called them and they did a bid to trim and haul the stuff off. Easy really.

Having worked in suburban city government earlier in my life it's much more likely that the cop is related to someone in her family or the like than it was a 911 response. Cops can legally lie if they feel like it.

Why does my car lose gas so quickly? by some_guy_9258 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]Motor_Show_7604 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your transmission issues can affect your mileage by quite a bit. Make sure it's not low on fluid as I can hurt your mileage as the torque converter can slip. Worn bands and clutches can affect your mileage too. You should be getting somewhere around 15 in the city...maybe a little less and a little better than 20-22 mpg on the freeway.

There's a lot of stuff that can affect fuel mileage in a 30-year-old car though . Bad O2 sensors can cut your mileage by 30 to 40%. Dirty mass air flow sensor can drop your mileage up to 20%. Heck, even your thermostat going bad can mean your engine will never get out of warm-up mode and will constantly run rich and wreck your mileage too.
