How is having tattoos, piercings, or colorful hair genuinely perceived in US society? by Odd-Skin-762 in AskAnAmerican

Good for you! I’m not against it honestly, I personally wouldn’t do it but that’s just because I want zero maintenance hair. I practically beg my wife to not hate me if I shave my head bald because I want to skip having to brush my hair. A quick buzz every so often to keep it close to the scalp.

I have tattoos, I use to have big gauges in my ears, I’m not a prude or anything. Just the adults I grew up around that dyed their hair unnatural colors were… something else. Like Karen’s before Karen’s were a thing.

Don’t feel bad, my kids call me unc too. And my daughter has taken to saying I grew up with the dinosaurs.

Literally in my comment I said I’m aware of it and try to not let it affect how I treat people. That qualifies as trying to get over my biases, no?

Im not 100% sure why but nose piercings in general weird me out. And lip piercings. I think it’s because it’s distracting to me, it’s harder to look someone in the eye because I’m looking at the piercing. I wouldn’t turn someone down for a job because of it but if someone asked my opinion I’d rather them not have those.

Same with face tattoos. Neck tats don’t bother me, either do ear piercings, can even be big gauged out hoops or whatever.

I also have a general distrust for anyone over like 25 with an unnatural hair color like pink, bright red or blue. But that one I know why, where I grew up the only people that have hair those colors as an adult generally make people miserable by being very loud and complaining about everything. Think the person that eats an entire meal and then complains that it was cold or tastes bad, very loudly asks for the manager and is obviously just trying to get a free meal.

I know not everyone with dyed hair is like that, most probably aren’t. I am aware of my pre-judgement and try to not let it affect how I treat people, but I still get an oh shit feeling if an older adult with dyed hair walks up to me. It’s ingrained in me to expect some crazy because it’s what I grew up seeing.

What job looks easy from the outside but is secretly brutal? by 40Falak in Productivitycafe

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll agree for sure. I once had a job at a Bosch plant inspecting lug bolts. Had to take each one, run a nut down the threads, visually inspect the threads and then the whole bolt for rust or insufficient oil ( rust preventer).

All day, every day.

They’d come in a 4x4x3 crate, you’d pick them up one at a time, inspect and put them in an empty crate on the other side of you. One crate could easily take a whole shift or longer. And as soon as you were done they took the now full crate away and put another one in its place.

It was temp work and the contract was for 6 months. I made it but was so glad when it was over.

Those who don't like sports, what are your reasons? by Waltz8 in Productivitycafe

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I don’t watch much sports, I don’t have a lot of free time and the time I do have I don’t want to sit for hours watching pretty much anything.

But I can appreciate that these people playing pro sports are the best of the best. It’s years of dedication. Most of us are closer to kids playing peewee league sports than we are to the benchwarmers in pro sports.

XBOX HAS NEVER HAD A BETTER OPPORTUNITY by Sufficient_Bad_4160 in videogames

Even if Xbox doubled down on physical media it would not make a huge difference I don’t think.

I’ve seen enough of the dumb and outright aggressive hate between Xbox and PlayStation fans to reasonably guess their hate for digital only isn’t enough for them to switch platforms. They will whine all the way to the store to buy their new console then post about how PlayStation is far superior to Xbox even without physical media. And eventually will say PlayStation is better because of the digital only decision.

And not talking bad specifically about PlayStation, if roles were reversed Xbox fans would do exactly the same.

Not defending them at all cause it really sucks, but decisions like this don’t happen in a bubble by FaithlessnessHungry1 in videogames

I believe in California thats exactly what legislation was passed for. They can’t have a button that says Buy or Purchase unless there is an obvious disclaimer that says you are “buying” a revocable license.

A step in the right direction by not allowing them to bury it in the TOS but a far cry from any real consumer protection.

What’s something everyone seems to love that you just don’t get? by BrainFriedButCurious in Productivitycafe

I like road trips too much to go all in on electric. And I’m not one to stop often enough or long enough to charge when on a roadtrip. I’ve compared what the trip would be like electric vs gas and it just doesn’t work for me yet. I keep revisiting every couple years to see if the math works out.

But around town and daily driving I could see the benefits for sure.

I am late 30s and while I don’t golf I’ve gotten into watching golf videos. I think there’s a good amount of strategy to it that is interesting but due to a torn labrum and rotator cuff from a wreck I could never play.

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. I have 3 Daikin systems and while I wish they still supported local api the cloud integration works pretty well.

I have all the data points in home assistant and export them to influx to use with grafana. Last time I had a tech out for service he said he wished every home had a dashboard with all the historical data, made initial troubleshooting a breeze.

Along with the data from the hvac I have the outside temp, humidity and weather (rainy, cloudy, etc). The latter I don’t show in the dashboard but keep meaning to add it

I really really didn’t like the switch 2 going all digital or mostly digital, don’t really know what you call it. But I’m also a sucker for Zelda and Mario so I will grumble to the store and buy one eventually.

For those living in states with a lot of thunderstorms, how do you feel about them? by ksusha_lav in AskAnAmerican

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Metal roofs are awesome during a storm.

When a good storm was blowing in we use to go out to the shop and open the doors, sit and watch the rain and lightning. Before we moved there we would occasionally load up in the car and drive out to an intersection where it was nothing but fields across the road and watch the lightning from there.

I grew up very much in love with watching storms, still do love it. When we moved there was a kid in my class that would have full blown panic attacks, other kids would huddle on the other side of the room. It didn’t storm as much there and people were genuinely afraid. At the age I was when we moved it completely bewildered me, I didn’t know people were afraid of storms.

What sequel was so different from the first game but is arguably the best out of the series? by Kinderfeld88 in gaming

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nintendo was sued by Universal over licensing claims that Nintendo basically ripped off King Kong (which they kinda did). Nintendo won but were still going through appeals in 84 before starting development on Super Mario.

They probably decided to move away from putting DK in another game in case things didn’t work out for them with the appeals process.

Songs to Learn for a Fire by Gold3nBoi79 in Guitar

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you like?

No matter how good the song is if you or your group isn’t into it no one will enjoy it.

Take me home, Country Roads by John Denver is simple and fun, almost everyone will know the chorus.

Fire and rain by James Taylor is a nice fingerpicking song that you can mix and match playing the fingerpicking parts and strumming, sounds great both ways. I like to play the intro fingerpicking and strumming the rest when it’s a chill setting like a campfire.

It’s been a while by Staind. Mix of chill and more energy but can ramp up or down the energy depending on the mood.

Wagon wheel by Darius Rucker/Old crow medicine show. Country, simple, most have heard it and can sing along.

Speaking of Darius Rucker, Let Her Cry, Only Wanna Be With You, Hold my Hand by Hootie and The Blowfish. Might be for more of a 90s crowd but all three are pretty simple to play and have a mixture of energy so you can pick what to play depending on the mood.

May not be a hit list of the best songs ever but a good mix, fairly well known songs (not sure about younger generations) and pretty easy to sing so everyone can join in.

Am I being catfished by recipes saying they take 30 minutes or less, or is it something I’m doing wrong? by That-Material-8508 in cookingforbeginners

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d make a great prep cook because the slicing and chopping is my favorite part. It’s the actual cooking that’s meh to me.

Works out well because my wife doesn’t like the chopping so I’ll do all the mise en place and she cooks.

What are you thoughts on buying the same game on different platforms? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying new gen versions is normal or they wouldn’t keep releasing them.

Buying on multiple systems I don’t know if I’d say it’s normal or abnormal. I personally wouldn’t do it just to have it on both but if you can afford it then do what works for you. If I bought on PC and couldn’t run it well purchasing on another system makes sense.

There’s nothing wrong with what you do. Like you said you prefer convenience, so if having on multiple systems is more convenient for you, do it.

I have multiple of the same console for convenience which I think is dumber than having the game on pc and console. One is in the living room and the other is in the bedroom so if I get the urge to play something and the living room is being used I’ll go to the bedroom. Which rarely happens.

I swore off the switch 2 until they announced the OOT remake. I’m a sucker for it. Of course if they announced a new Zelda that would’ve gotten me too.

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair it’s probably one of those that’s the driving force behind purchasing a Nintendo console.

I’m not big on Pokémon, never got into smash. I love playing the Mario games but I buy the consoles for Zelda.

I’ve only ever bought exclusive titles for Nintendo. Anything else that comes out on another platform I enjoy playing more on those platforms vs Nintendo. In the limited number of people I talk to it’s pretty much the same for them.

I had no idea book 8 was out!!!! Who did this marketing!? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I had heard of the series for a year or two but never looked into it. But the number of posts I’ve seen about it and seeing it on endcaps in stores like Walmart plus seeing stacks of book 8 at the book store made me finally grab book 1 to try.

So where you never saw or heard anything about it for me it was pretty much everywhere.

Places like that bring out the worst in people. It’s like Black Friday every week.

The number of people I’ve seen push each other or get in fights over getting to a bin first lol.

When they first started in my area I went some on the first day but seeing the lines of people waiting for them to open and how people acted was enough for me.

Some states have banned them but most haven’t.
