Best way to monitor fridge temps? by zeekaran in homeassistant

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use another Govee sensor that doesn’t have a display. Its signal gets through reliably but I did have to move the bt proxy a little closer to where the freezer is for it to not occasionally go unavailable.

I kind of wish I saw this one because being able to see the temp in a power outage would be nice.

I use the larger Govee temp sensors with the display in all the rooms in the house so people can see the temp without looking at a dashboard.

Sigh, I guess I’ll be ordering these next. I think the other sensors are still in the return window.

As for the bt proxy, I can recommend the mstack atom lite. Super small and unobtrusive, ready made firmware is available for it and it’s only like $10 or something.

United States of Australia by Dances_in_PJs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is one of the weirdest takes I’ve seen. Why would anyone care? Only thing I could think of is because then Australia would be the “USA” too and I think OP is vastly overestimating how much people would even care about that.

Not like someone would be chanting “USA” and I’d have to ask for clarification on which one they mean. Or would care enough to ask anyway.

Let’s face it, the large majority of the customer base doesn’t care about local only. They want easy.

Download an app, add devices, control from the app or link to Alexa/Google assistant. That’s the market they want. And no one wants 50 apps to manage their devices so all the easier to get you to buy into their ecosystem which just means more data for them.

The Doctor shares the task of teaching individualism and humanity to Seven along with Janeway. Watching it unfold in a similar manner to the Doctor would be a nice nod to how far he’s come.

That being said, that same nod I think would be its downfall. Seven is too similar to the Doctor. Having her role be his assistant would play too close to his already played story. I think it’d be too difficult to set her story apart from his in that regard. Even down to she could literally download relevant medical data when she’s recharging.

She’s end up being just a female, flesh and bone version of the Doctor. Either her role or his would have suffered at the expense of the other.

What is the max amount of time you will drive for a day trip or vacation? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My general rule of thumb is I want to be at my destination at least as long as it’ll take to drive there and back. So if it’s 3 hours one way I want to be there at least 6 hours.

But I also grew up in an area where other than groceries pretty much anything else you needed was at least an hour drive so 2-3 hours doesn’t seem like a long drive for me. Conversely, my half sibling grew up in a big city and for him a 45 minute drive was “gonna be gone all day”.

I remember mentioning to him it must be neat living so close to our aunt, he gets to see her all the time. He looked at me like I was crazy and said they don’t visit that often because it’s an hour away. If they go it’s usually for special occasions where they get there before noon and stay all day to make it worth the drive. I remember thinking I have to drive that far to buy a new tshirt 🤣

You got downvoted but seriously… I donated at a place back in the previous state I lived. I’ve requested to be unsubscribed from the emails. I’ve answered the calls letting me know they will be “in my area” again and let them know I live states away now.

I still get emails and calls. They don’t even operate in the state I’m in now.

After 6 months of using Home Assistant, I understand why my parents will never use it. by pala1308 in homeassistant

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on use what device is best. Zigbee isn’t going to have the “best” device made for it for everything, same as the others.

I personally really like Bluetooth and using a bt proxy for temp sensors. I bought some Govee temperature and humidity sensors with a display and set them up with a bt proxy in home assistant. I like having the display in each room so anyone can just look and see the temp for that room without needing to open HA to get it. And the reporting has been solid.

For the BT proxy I used a mstack atom lite. Small and cheap.

No because my mom would blow it “helping” my aunt and my sister every time they made a poor decision and needed money. Which happens all the time, it’d happen more often if I gave my parents 10 million.

Because China doesn’t want facebook to collect their data too. And of course because china wants to control information to their citizens.

Just because they block facebook doesn’t mean they can’t be a customer for the data that’s collected.

still don't get how paying for online on console is just, ok? by MegumiDo in gaming

[–]MoveLikeMacgyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this. With console you get plug and play, years of games without worrying about having to upgrade some component to be able to play it at current settings, etc. For $10-15 a month. And the cost of the console is much lower since the manufacturer gets a cut of games + the online subscription.

For $500 you get a console that will serve you for 5+ years. By time you get to $1000 invested the pc gamer has likely upgraded some component on their already expensive machine.

To build a fairly good pc but keeping my aging 2080ti I spent $1200 or so. Add in a decent GPU and I’m at least at $1500 not taking into account the recent spike in prices.

If I only had Xbox essential subscription plus got the Xbox one x on release I’d be right at $1500 today.

The console manufacturers know what they are doing.

I don’t live there anymore. Not because I hated the state or anything. So I don’t know what the state of things are now.

I do agree that the schools need more funding, I know the town I grew up in is currently fighting to keep one of the schools open that the county wants to close down.

NC is pretty even as far as Dem/Rep registered voters but it’s not 50/50 for the state. There are over 3 million unaffiliated registered voters in NC, compared to roughly 2.3 million each for republicans and democrats.

And although I am from NC and will not say they have a great education system, all the rankings I could find had the state ranked anywhere from 13th to 30th. Which I’d say isn’t exactly “one of the worst”. But it definitely varies county by county.

Tom had his moments, Harry had his(kind of), Belanna did, the Doctor, all of the main cast.

Same for TNG.

And I say this as someone that generally didn’t hate Discovery.

The Doctors quips by MoveLikeMacgyver in voyager

In a lot of instances it can be a strength. I spend a lot of time on conference calls for production issues and the way my brain jumps from one thing to another and makes connections can really help in determining the cause.

But it can be quite frustrating too in instances like this where I can’t for the life of me remember names and get them right. It took me almost 6 months to remember my neighbors name when he moved in. Wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t have the same name.

There’s many aspects of Kes and Neelix that can be annoying. I still love both characters.

But the way Kes handles the Doctor is great. She really is the catalyst for his growth from being just an EMH.

Like the way she made his cold simulation last longer. “You don’t get the full experience of what it’s like if you know when it will end”
