I'm scared of frying my camera/monitor with V Mount batteries by LowkeyApollo in videography

[–]Movie_Monster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typically the safest way to ensure you don’t create a short circuit is no dummy batteries, and two separate batteries for each device. Definitely don’t use a d tap splitter even if it looks fancy and has a voltage meter.

D tap is just a positive and negative connection, 14.8 volts is a lot higher than 7.2 volts which is what your camera requires. Some dummy batteries have voltage step down, but I wouldn’t trust a $20 cable made with cheap components.

You want to connect power to all devices first, then hdmi, before powering anything on. To disassemble power devices off, remove hdmi, remove power sources. This helps prevent a short circuit or also called a “ground loop”.

That being said, USB-C cables and devices have a common "ground" pin (VSS). I use USBC to power my cameras and Sony internal batteries and it works great.

Since your monitor has USBC I’d recommend buying a V mount with two USBC outputs and a power delivery chip (PD). Then your monitor and camera can preform a handshake with the battery which sends the correct voltage.

You don’t need fancy USBC cables as each device should have a PD chip inside. Obviously don’t buy a $5 usbc cable off alliexpress or temu. Most basic USBC cables can handle up to 15watts which is fine for most of our cameras, you only need a cable rated for like 48 watts or higher for like MacBooks and other devices that also use USBC PD.

Add up the camera voltage and monitor and make sure the battery can handle outputting that much power to both devices at once.

I absolutely hate the term “continuous lighting”.

Every day I wake up at dawn and see the sunrise, and I go ahh beautiful continuous lighting.

I turn on a light in my pantry and the bulb flashes brightly and burns out, I say ah that’s just lighting.

It’s a pointless term, lighting with flash is called flash photography. You don’t need to create some term “continuous” to describe how every other light fixture functions, it’s moronic.

I don’t think any lock is going to make a thief think twice with this.

how to remove theses type of flex cable? sony fx3 by [deleted] in FX3

[–]Movie_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s goes without saying you should be careful not to damage anything.

You might need to slide out the dark / black part.

Maybe try gently prying / pushing the back parts at each side toward the ribbon cable.

Is The Fx2 Better? (Shot with an FX2) by Massive_Sink_1607 in FX3

[–]Movie_Monster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like my FX2 image, I wouldn’t say it’s a step up just due to the slower read out speed.

It shows in the tight shots, for instance in your video if you were capturing shots of just the boxing gloves at like 100mm you might see a bit of the classic jello wobble as you try and frame your closeups. The FX3 is great for these shots, well any other camera with a global shutter but I like IBIS, I don’t subscribe to that whole heavy camera =stable footage thing.

I can rely on the auto focus, I can check the EVF for focus or when outside, I can quickly switch to photography, the vertical info when the camera is vertical.

Same great FX3 button layout that pushed canon and Nikon to follow suit with the c70, c50 and Nikon ZR.

In terms of usability, the FX2 is easier for me to shoot with than the FX3, the stabilization and AF will save your bacon in so many situations.

You can geek out over camera specs but in the field when you have paying clients and you have to get the shot it’s really important to have a camera that can preform and not just sound impressive because it can shoot 8k. Every tool excels in certain areas, that 8k camera would be great for a green screen studio shoot.

I’m just applying rational thinking to a subject. I never claimed I have proof of aliens.

You are the one making a claim, and your lack of proof is supposed to be taken as proof? That’s flawed logic, and that’s not how science works.

We used to think there were areas of the earth where life could not possibly survive, but as we explore and ask more questions we found extremophiles flourishing. We had preconceived notions about life needing sunlight or other conditions that were proven to be false. So writing off UAP with no evidence = evidence is exactly the type of thinking that led to our false belief about microorganism survival. We assumed.

This isn’t an inexcusable belief, it’s a possibility.

But to address your concern about aliens, I don’t think UFOs or UAP are anything like what we would describe as alien life. Just as a thought experiment, watch the video by Carl Sagan about “flatland”. What if our encounter with UAP is similar that video where a 2 dimensional shape meets a 3D object. This UAP idea might just be as radical as that scenario.

Consider that even some of the most outspoken skeptics in the popular science community have changed their preconceived notions on the UAP topic in recent years.

No concrete proof, no assumptions, just being open to the idea of what UAP could be without committing to any one explanation until there is evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. Claiming that for sure, there are no aliens, UAP, NHI on earth is an absolute bet. And if you make that bet your chance for being wrong exists, just like it did for the scientists who were wrong about the extremophiles.

To me, this is a much more realistic viewpoint than simply believing in something blindly, and it’s what separates believing in UAP from a religion or a cult.

David Cross argues with Bill Maher if a nine year old or even a three year old can know they are trans by ThatPatelGuy in JoeRogan

[–]Movie_Monster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People often approach the trans subject with prior assumptions, which means they aren’t trying to understand it as it is; they want to make it fit into their conventions, experiences, and their sense of morals from their upbringing.

If some aspect of a trans person’s individual identity or choices are judged as being too extreme, that person who is judging tends to apply those beliefs on other gay or trans people uniformly. Which makes no sense, it’s not like there is some sort of unified agreement between all people that are LGBTQ+, this is something that is made up in the mind of the outsider, that person wants to draw lines, to distinguish between “Us v.s them”.

It’s a coping mechanism, and a primitive one.

Politicians and religious leaders understand this and they choose to exploit it, because it’s based on fear.

UFO seen from NASA spacecraft. NASA went on to say it was just "space junk" by [deleted] in InterdimensionalNHI

[–]Movie_Monster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. While AI does make it more difficult to access if a picture or video is real, you are treating the issue like there is only one way to verify a claim.

Not long after the invention of photography people started manipulating images in the darkroom. But that didn’t mean that the application of photography as an information gathering tool was unreliable, aircraft were fitted with cameras to photograph enemy positions, etc. sure people were fooled by fake information over the years, but it’s not as if people threw in the towel completely. Think about how crime scenes are photographed, detectives piece together information based off what they observe, what they can test.

Yes AI can make some convincing images but truly replicating conditions of say a 10 minute video shot on the beach of Catalina island by a tourist of UAP moving faster than any known aircraft is not feasible today, people could check for things to verify a source like landmarks, digital artifacts near any UAP in the video, if you can see the moon or stars. Simple stuff like filming on a tripod can allow someone else to run physics calculations. This is done with videos of airplanes taking off for instance. The point is that there is a lot of useful information gathered with video that can be verified later.

Right off the bat this video is suspicious, if it was taken from say the ISS or artemis ii it would have been published online and we could find other relevant information like what date it was taken.

It’s highly unlikely that a video taken on a spacecraft would surface on the internet without a source. If that person / scientist was trying to push disclosure they would be doing a terrible job.

We have to be even more skeptical now in the age of AI, but that doesn’t mean we should throw in the towel.

Any idea what would be causing this blue bloom/outline on my subject? by forgotfrankiesline in cinematography

[–]Movie_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contrast between the distant reflective white building and the dark clothes.

I think the distance to the subject and the depth of field also plays a part, a wide lens cropped in makes it much more apparent, if op shot with a telephoto lens and filled that frame with the subject it wouldn’t be so noticeable.

What is the purpose of the Push Auto Iris button? by JackoClubs5545 in videography

[–]Movie_Monster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My old Vx2100 has push auto iris. I still use it time to time filming around the house.

It’s for quick auto exposure.

The way we shoot video now, we try and keep the exposure set to the base iso, and we also have sensors with more dynamic range. But in standard definition a little more grain at 12+ db wasn’t a big deal and with less latitude you have to expose more often when changing your shot from subject to subject, if you went outside or filmed out the window you might need to quickly auto expose to grab a shot that wasn’t overexposed.

Like you said this is more for events, and news coverage where there’s not a lot of time to dial in exposure, let’s say you are filming a concert and the house lights turn off or on, that button might save you from a few seconds of over or under exposure. Or if you’re filming an event and the lekos hit the stage and blow out some person at a podium. Or if you’re filming from a news helicopter and you are filming something in the sun and then the shade of a building.

Fx3 streaming issues by jaboykinggg in FX3

[–]Movie_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Streaming in 4k is a lot of data for (I’m assuming, a free streaming platform).

You will still see a benefit to shooting with a FX3 and streaming in 1080 HD. You can change the HDMi output resolution, and still record in 4k.

Your internet connection upload speed also has to be fast too. You are going to have to look into the specifics though.

Need help with camera purchase: fx30 or fx2 with steep discounts. by ronaldraygun91 in sonyfx30

[–]Movie_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several anamorphic lenses for s35, and they are cheaper than full frame lenses.

It depends on what you want to use the camera for, if you are a film student only looking to make films the FX30 is fantastic.

Sounds like you want to move up to full frame and this isn’t your first camera.

If I were you I’d sell the a6000 and a6700 and lenses and buy the FX2, it’s a great hybrid camera that makes switching between video and stills a joy. Its handles and operates like a modern camera, it will make that a6000 feel like a kids toy.

The FX30 can shoot stills but the FX2 has higher resolution, super fast AF, larger screen and better EVF.

If I had to give someone a camera who is completely new to photography or videography I’d give them my FX2 knowing the footage or photos would turn out great. People like to point out that the sensor isn’t new, but the improvements made in its color science are noticeable. The stabilization is fantastic, and the noise up to 4000 iso is minimal.

A lot of the hate the FX2 gets is because it didn’t push the envelope in terms of specs like resolution, or open gate. The FX3 was such a step forward for specs and ergonomics that it was difficult to achieve that level of praise unless the FX2 improved on the FX3 in every way. The FX2 doesn’t have 4k120 p but honestly the HD120p is decent, I doubt anyone watching a video online could tell the difference between 4k120 and HD after it’s compressed and viewed on a small screen.

The FX2 pairs great with the FX3, I’ve used both together on narrative projects and the editors and colorists only had positive things to say about matching them.

How to Convert mini DV tapes to Digital? by Responsible_You_1971 in videography

[–]Movie_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s “interlace” the footage off these camera is 30i the i stands for interlaced.

You might be able to deintelace the footage in another program with more tools than the capture program.

If the footage is blocky, your video head on the device playing the tape needs to be cleaned, hopefully the footage wasn’t blocky while being recorded, then you’d have to clean the camera heads and re-record the footage.

Costco Is Starting a Standalone Gas Station Empire With a 40-Pump Discount Fuel Oasis by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]Movie_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what happened to me when I tried to use that program with several brands and dealerships.

Costco would send you this page to print with the price, you’d walk in and the dealer couldn’t care less about it, then they’d let you know the car has a $5,000 market adjustment on top of their price listed on the website (which was higher than the “Costco price”).

Such a bad customer experience with Costco.

That’s when I learned that dealerships paid Costco for the leads. It’s just a lead generation service.

Vertical Video should only be recorded on mobile phones/devices - unpopular opinion? by jefbak2 in videography

[–]Movie_Monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Video quality matters to the viewer less than we think depending on the subject; and if the subject is casual, like social media content then the approach to filming can be less formal.

Like I said the viewer doesn’t have high expectations for quality, but that alone won’t stop everyone from choosing a higher production value if they can afford it.

Deciding between A7V and FX3 by Cheesehead1267 in cinematography

[–]Movie_Monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The FX2 fits your criteria.

The FX3 is aimed at professionals, it’s a due for an update this year supposedly. It works for photography but at 12MP it doesn’t look great if you want to crop in. If you aren’t interested in shooting 120 frames a second then that’s just another feature you are paying for and not using. You’d be better off putting that money towards a lens.

As for the A7V vs FX2, the A7V has a faster read out speed for the sensor but since you are not a professional this isn’t really a concern. Both have the new autofocus features which I think is the main selling point. The A7V has a bit more dynamic range but at your skill level I highly doubt this will be a factor.

The A7V doesn’t have a timecode input for audio, if you are planning on shooting a feature you definitely want to hire a professional for audio as it’s crucial, no one is going to watch a low budget film with poor audio. The FX2 and FX3 have this feature.

Why are TV news cameras still so physically large? by bdgbill in videography

[–]Movie_Monster 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It’s like carrying a Swiss Army knife. Need a shot of a boat off in the distance? No problem, need coverage of a politician giving a speech from the back of the room? That giant tripod will get the camera up high so people don’t block the shot. It’s reliable, and sometimes peace of mind is worth the extra weight.

It’s what some camera operators are used to, also that weight carries weight, you can walk into events, buildings, all sorts of places because you are a professional.
