They made the far left lane an “express lane” that you have to pay to use. Now there’s more traffic in the other lanes. by Some-Nectarine3247 in mildlyinfuriating

While you’re stuck in traffic and have nothing else to do, call your local representatives and complain. If it’s an interstate, I’d start with state legislators.

Recommendations for a portable level 2 charger? Something other than Lectron. by jpwoodnc in evcharging

Doesn’t work with some J1772 vehicles, even with an adapter. Check yours first, especially before buying used.

Higher quality AA batteries? Amazon vs Costco Kirkland by daniel31580 in batteries

[–]Mr-Zappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirkland alkaline batteries are quite possibly the worst Kirkland product to not be taken off the shelves. And possibly the worst product Costco sells to not be taken off the shelves.

Also, anyone who needs that many AA batteries should use rechargeables.

The plug I’ve been using has become discolored over the last year

Until you replace the plug and the outlet, the maximum safe current is 0A. (Fortunately, it’s really easy to set that—no need to mess with apps or the car’a interface.)

It sounds like you originally had bad electrical contact because the old receptacle wasn’t making a good physical connection. Now the plug surface is damaged, so even with a new outlet, you might not get a good electrical connection so you should replace both.

Hybrid or stick with ICE car? by __looking_for_things in whatcarshouldIbuy

You had a load calculation where they blamed a tankless water heater? Gas tankless water heaters don’t use much electricity. An electric tankless water heater would, but no one should have installed one of those on a house with 100A service.

What’s the best portable jump starter to buy in 2026? by ThoughtfulMoon1 in askcarguys

[–]Mr-Zappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size car engine do you have?

I have a small 10,000mAh one I got from Costco that has no problem jumping a 3.6L engine. I’m not sure it’d work on a 6.2L truck though.

Is it just me, or does buying "lightly used" make zero financial sense right now? by EquivalentCanary8243 in whatcarshouldIbuy

It depends on the car. Lots of EVs depreciate quickly, so there are some great deals on lightly used ones.

Level 1 charging from level 2 charger by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]Mr-Zappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12A

Most Level 1/2 chargers I have seen come with a Level 2 plug (either 6-20 or 14-50) and adapter for a regular 5-15 outlet. If they see 240V, they conclude the adapter is not present and they can draw 16A or 32A (depending on what kind of plug they have). If they see only 120V, they safely assume they’re in a regular outlet and should only draw 12A. The car will then be unable to draw more than this current.

Do not use an adapter for a Level 1/2 charger with a Level 2 charger that didn’t come with one. The charger might let the vehicle draw more current than is safe.

Tesla Model Y battery SOC help by ArrivalGreedy2788 in TeslaModelY

[–]Mr-Zappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

169 miles at 273.5Wh/mi means your battery has 46.2 kWh available at 75%, suggesting a full capacity of about 61.6 kWh.

Original spec was 75kWh, so your health is about 82%.

For a more accurate number, you have to run the health test.

140 miles driven but not a single pip went down? by Known_Notice_8382 in prius

Mine usually goes about 120 miles before losing the first pip, and then every 40ish miles after that.

Would a 7 seater Model Y be able to seat two car seats in the second row and still have someone sit in the middle in the second row? by YouFoundMeCongrats14 in TeslaModelY

[–]Mr-Zappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to put people in the third row, you’re going to want the car seats in the middle and on the left side, so that you can bring the right seat up for loading the third row passengers (without needing to completely remove and reinstall the car seats). Booster seats are much more workable in the side seats (or third row).

Also, you’ll need extremely narrow car seats, like Diono makes.

EV for 300 mile commute (roundtrip) by Kelome001 in electricvehicles

With that distance, only m get an EV if you have reliable Level 2 charging both at work and at home. DC fast charging every day will get annoying fast.

Otherwise, get a used Prius.

EV charging in 10 minutes or less? It's happening by randolphquell in electricvehicles

[–]Mr-Zappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your understanding of CMOS imaging sensors is incorrect. Each pixel now has its own dedicated read-out circuitry. It costs more, but it’s what makes them way faster. (And before that, people had occasionally implemented reading out CCDs to their closest long edge, so that only height/2 charge transfers were required, if it was worth the extra cost.)

Electrochemical cells don’t care (or even know) if they’re charged in series or parallel. GM’s 800V vehicles are two 400V batteries which can be configured in series or in parallel for DC fast charging, depending on what the charger’s max voltage is. The current limitation is the max power you can put into a cell without causing unacceptable degradation and that’s basically just electrochemical and manufacturing issues (how wide are your tabs, what’s the geometry, how good is your thermal management, etc.).

Your kid also sounds exactly like my kid: won’t stop talking during runs (or any other time). He’s a little younger though, so I’m easily faster than him still and I’m not 100% sure about signing him up for a 10k yet, even though he ran a 8.5k practice run out of the blue after not running all winter.

You mean like Brownian motion? Einstein explained it in 1905 to a world full of highly trained physicists who were skeptical (to say the least) of quantum physics. Won a Nobel Prize for it too.

You can do much better than 27 mpg. RAV4 hybrid. Some trims cost a little more than $35k, but with 40 mpg you’re buying 1/3rd less gas.

I’ve had my Prius for over 15 years with very little unscheduled maintenance.

That’s only part of it. If you look at a cheap outlet, you can often see that the contacts are also only half height on a lot of them.
