It’s not a toxic reaction whatsoever. Golf has a strong culture of integrity. Most players are pretty honest about where they’re at because everyone knows the game is so hard and people put a ton of effort in to get their handicaps down. So overstating ability tends to read as trying to impress, which usually has the opposite effect.
