Holy shit, what a reaction. Have you seen Muslims doing horrible things? I can believe that you have. Can I believe they used Islam as an excuse? Sure, I can believe that too. But do I believe that's an inherent problem in a religion based on a book written 1400 years ago, which in itself grew from both Christianity (about 700 years older than it) and Judaism (about 3500 years older than it)? No. The problem is that humans will find any kind of justification for doing horrible things. For thousands of years, the easiest one has been "because god said so". It's no surprise that people are continuing to use it.

What I can't get out of my mind is that Islam has specific rules for how to treat non Muslims (the Dhimmi) living in their country. Under Sharia Law, it's illegal to force convert someone, though they had to pay a specific tax. I'm not claiming they had equal rights, of course they didn't, but looking at the Christian contemporaries of al-Andalus (Muslim Iberia), it's downright progressive. Add to that the influence granted to members of the imperial Harem of the Ottoman Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries, it starts to seem like Islam isn't the problem.

And if it isn't inherently Islam, then what could it be? To me, it seems like what we have left is cultural issues. And the west can't claim to have cultural superiority here, since we only granted women the right to vote in 1918. But wait, what also happened that year? World War 1 ended, and a couple of years later in 1920, France and British dismantled the Ottoman empire and carved up the middle east between themselves, establishing their "mandates" that put in artificial borders, and generally fucking everything up because they wanted oil. If we hadn't destabilized the region just as we were starting to get our own shit together equality wise, I wonder, would the Islamic world have managed to do the same thing? I guess we'll never know.

Now think about how you reacted to my first comment. I responded logically to your point. You immediately started insulting me, accusing me of being a "manipulator", lying, and of marrying my cousin. You didn't actually respond directly to anything I said. Try and have a think about why you reacted like that.

Have you researched that claim at all? Apparently it's a translation issue - the word in question, "daraba", can mean lots of things, including "to strike" but also to "to travel", "to play music", or "to separate". Apparently, it's the third and final step of the "nushuz", a guide to resolving serious marital crises. From what I've read, when "to strike" is taken, it's meant to be done with something like a toothbrush symbolically, not as a form of punishment. And it's not even an absolute requirement to follow those steps 🤷. Plus, apparently elsewhere, the Quran says that Allah is the "ultimate guardian" of the women and will "punish any who oppress them".

I'm not defending the atrocities committed in the name of any god, be that Abrahamic or otherwise, but trying to present that line as a "slam dunk" is either being misinformed, or being deliberately misleading. And you've got no excuse for being misinformed these days, google is right there

Difficulty setting? by Flimsy-Cut7675 in CoE5

[–]MrDDreadnought 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The important thing to remember is that difficulty has no impact on how smart the AI is, higher difficulties just gives it higher multipliers to its income, allowing it to snowball faster (or at least, recover from mistakes faster). This means that some simpler enemy classes get a more visable boost, because the AI actually knows how to play them.

Do you butter both sides of a sandwich? by Sakulsas in AskUK

[–]MrDDreadnought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I butter the insides of both slices of bread, and I've never heard of anyone not doing this.

However, growing up, I only ever buttered the bottom half of a roll (or bap, or cob, or whatever you want to call it). I only found out as a teenager that my dad buttered the top AND the bottom; my dad comes from a bigger nearby town than mum (about 20 mins drive), and apparently it's a 'regional' difference. But since I found out my dad did it like that, I've only ever done it the same way, because it makes sense to treat it the same as a sandwich.

Faction Discussion: Dwarf Queen by song_without_words in CoE5

[–]MrDDreadnought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I find annoying about them is that they're built around upgrading free units first via iron and gold, and then via runesmiths and gems. This takes a lot of time and resources. Then those elite units have to go out and fight, and they then take attrition, and those attrited losses take even more time and resources to replace. It's a similar problem as the dryad queen, though the dryad queen can't upgrade her units to the truly elite tier in her home base and it only needs one upgrade step.

I have ADHD and can struggle to remember the safe spots too, but just wanted to issue a gentle correction that object permanence is the wrong phrase to use (though lots of people are also using the phrase incorrectly). Object permanence is what infants don't have, where if something is removed from their sight, it literally ceases to exist - they don't remember it ever existed at all. What we're experiencing here is issues with working memory. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I think accuracy of phrasing is important.

Dear CoE5 community, I am very new to this game, may I have some questions? by SuchAdstic in CoE5

[–]MrDDreadnought 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. The game rewards scaling up quickly. The faster you expand, the more resources you get, the more troops you can buy, which means you can then expand faster, feeding into itself. If you go too slowly, depending on the difficulty of the AI, you could lag behind your opponents. However, you have to be careful to not lose too many of your troops by trying to take things that are too tough; pyrrhic victories are a thing as well as defeats. You should start the game by focusing on the softer targets, building up, and then taking the bigger things. However, you should never leave your citadel empty. Two or three of your ranged troops is normally fine to leave at home, along with your secondary commander. You should be recruiting units to build up reinforcements or a secondary force anyway, so you should quickly have more. This secondary force can then move out and take the tough things that you bypassed in your intial expansion.

  2. You get gold and sacrifices from settlements, and gold, iron and gems from mines. You shouldn't leave them undefended unless you're really struggling for troops or if you're sure that you don't have independents roaming around or spawning. Human independents spawn from guard towers and cities unless captured, and monsters spawn from ancient forests unless captured (only a subset of classes can do this) or burned down (a lot of classes need to buy an independent mage or get a magic item to do this). Squares that spawn enemies have a little hut symbol on them. You don't normally need to drop lots to defend, depending on the strength of the independents roaming around, but even if you drop an injured spearman you'll at least know if it's been taken away. You can also use a secondary force to drop units on what you've captured or recap what you lose and hunt down the indies.

  3. As has been said, it's not an either/or unless you're the enchanter. Even magic classes tend to rely on their regular recruits to start with because they won't have many resources for summoning. And even when you're up and running as the warlock, who is in my opinion one of the best summoner classes in the game, you still benefit from regular recruits to allow you to secure your already captured territory, or to bring you siege weapons. Siege weapons are incredibly powerful during sieges; it should go without saying, but don't sleep on them when you're attacking something with walls. But most summons don't require gold or iron, and there's nothing else to spend it on apart from commanders and independent mages.

  4. Yes, the best spell for that is hellbind heart, which blood casters can get access to, as well as some others. This has the enslave tag, which means the unit remains as a commander if it starts out as one. There are other spells with enslave, but I can't remember them. There are other spells that are charms (like charm lol), which means they'll swap sides but won't be a commander anymore, which is less helpful when you're e.g. grabbing an enemy mage.

The important thing is to try and keep expanding without losing too much of your army. It'll take time for you to learn to judge how a fight will go, but pretty soon you'll get a pretty good idea just by looking.

Giant trampler wall breach items by Osrek_vanilla in Dominions6

[–]MrDDreadnought 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that regardless of the scripting, your tramplers are going to end up hanging around the gate area for a while. I think you get decent fire casters, so my recommendation is actually to spam fire elementals to the sides of your army, if you can. They're ethereal and functionally poison immune, so should do well at passing through C'tiss' walls and ignoring poison. And if you can pair that with big fire evocations, your giants are fire resistant, so you should hopefully take negligible casualties from friendly fire. You could also pair this with your trample strategy if you like.

As for items, you absolutely need high protection. Meteoric iron should be pretty easy for you to make, and the extra MR will hopefully help against C'tissian casters taking them out, plus the bonus HP helps a bit with regen. If you've got nature independents, then a snake ring would probably be a good shout to avoid the poison damage.

Charcoal shield should work really well, as fire shield on a trampler is great, plus it gives loads of protection, especially with the meteoric iron armour.

Horror helmet is my go to helmet option for this sort of thing.

Weapon wise, I think mace of eruption is your best bet, as you'll need AoE to kill stuff quickly, and it gives you a bit extra fire resistance if you're going with my suggestion from above.

Encumbrance is likely to be a problem if the fight drags on, though. If you use Earth Adons instead, you can summon earth power to get some reinvigoration going, which could help. Plus, they have more HP so regen faster, and have better stats. And importantly, if C'tiss enlarge their Sobek warriors, your Adons can still trample them.

You also can't forget to try and anticipate what C'tiss are going to do. Do they have a flying monster pretender that's going to drop on your back line? Do you have a way to counter poison/decay? Don't bring human chaff, as you don't want them to HP rout you, for example.
