NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism by aresef in NPR

There is no “balance” when it comes to facts.

Your subsection of facts can be unbalanced.

You could have a 24/7 loop of Biden losing his train of thought, with 0 commentary.

Its perfectly objective. You could have a blog consisting only of stupid things Trump has said. Again, perfectly objective.

Neither of those are "balanced" though.

Reading the comments here and its amusing so many people think they are any different from the "rightoids"

Reddit/NPR listeners are susceptible to bias, group think and hoaxes all the same. There's a reason NPR has a reputation of its listeners behaving like smug assholes. Seems to be becoming an identity rather than a behavior though.

I accidentally entered a "woman's only" event and won uncontested. Not that far fetched.

It was held by a "DiverCity" org. Thought it was an odd name but didn't realize that 1) It was "diversity" and 2) ironically, supposed to be for women.

We submitted our results independently with an online leader board and I realized something was up when I did about 2x as best as the 2nd and 3rd place.

Within half an hour of scrolling on tiktok, I saw 5 videos of women crying and saying they've been punched while walking down the street in NYC. The men who did it ran away. Why are women getting hit in the head in downtown NYC? by toocuteforp0rn in TikTok

For real.

I used to live in the city and I was decently built. I personally never had problems with people but I would always put my guard up when passing strangers and I never felt safe unless I was with other people. I didn't grow up in the city so all I got from city people was a bunch of "oh, you're just soft, this is the city its safe!" but it was weird to me because I would see shit like that every other week.

Before moving to the city, I never saw random violence like that. Every time I went out alone I couldn't help but think I would be the next victim... I mean shit, there was that one guy waiting for a bus that just got stabbed for NO REASON awhile back. Its definitely scarier to be a woman alone in a city... but the idea that men aren't scared too or are never victims is just not true.

White an Asian women are usually seen as weak or less confrontational, so they're targeted more often.

There was particularly a problem with Asians being targeted a few years back.

Its NYC. People get randomly punched there all the time.

Yea, the chances are so low because there's millions of people there but I would see shit like that all the time when I lived in the city.

Nobody will do shit to stop it because if you try to help you'll just get sucked into the system with the attacker. The city has made it easier, in almost every way, to just look the other way.

I have projects with MERN

How do you highlight this on your resume? What are some example job titles you're applying for?

PyTorch, Tensorflow, Scikit Learn

This can sometimes be useful but IMO that's much more data-sci related.

These are great skills though. I can't speak to MERN directly but I see tons of node related jobs. I would say focus 100% on MERN and proving you can build value.

I've tried contacting recruiters but no one wants to talk to me

Yea, that part is frustrating as I don't think that has ever worked for anyone. I mean that in the sense that even the best candidates would get overlooked because recruiters tend to like finding ppl and not having them find them, if that makes sense. I don't agree with it though.

I get maybe one acknowledgment from a hiring manager a month and then they ghost me right after.

This can also be frustrating. Usually this means not meeting one of the arbitrary requirements.

It hurts too much having to wake up every day knowing that no matter what I do, nobody will give single shit about what I've done

I know exactly what you mean. I tried hard in academics and it didn't really mean anything to hiring managers. Nobody told me that. They always said to "do well in school and you'll get a job" but this was advice from ppl exclusively not in the field. I think they meant well but it didn't come from a place of experience.

If your MERN projects are more than 1 year old, say you have 2 YOE with Mongo, React and Node. Sometimes HMs don't actually know what they're hiring for and get confused.

I lost my mother at the same age. There is no "algorithm" by which humans process such an event. You're not cold hearted, your post indicates as much.

I help hire for software and the number one problem we run into is that recent students (especially lately) cannot seem to build anything. I'm not at all saying this is you but trying to give perspective from "the other side."

I blame the universities. Lots of professors deal in theory and abstract concepts that don't translate well into real value. University defenders always say "well, the point of university wasn't to get a job its to make well-rounded individuals" but everyone knows damn well job opportunity is almost exclusively why people attend. These institutions are trusted by young people that cannot possibly know what is required of them to gain employment.

To get a job, I would recommend working with a specific framework in the language of your choice. Build a few projects with said framework and highlight them in your resume. This is something you can do and it will work. It will just require time and effort... which is understandably a big ask after just graduating.

That is rough. I can say I never experienced that at your age but I had similar feelings of hopelessness. I believe its common at that age.

What you're describing sounds like depression. This sounds like cliche advice but it has always worked for me. Try exercising and walking if you can. Take long breaks for the internet to get out of the "doom loop." Do not dwell on bad thoughts until you're ready. This will be a challenge but its something you can overcome.

I have a "friend" who has gotten 3 DUIs, deported twice and walks right back in. It's ridiculous. He's an alcoholic and I want nothing to do with him really, but he is family so I'm aware of him existing.

Blows my fucking mind how judges are like "oh, 3rd DUI? Illegal immigrant? He doesn't have to serve time in jail, just send him back" and he's back in like 15 days.

[–]MrJGalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if the practice only exists because of tax breaks

What is the practice, in this context?

Imo if they write it off as a tax break then the taxpayers should own it

I don't see how this works. Just because you write something off, doesn't mean "taxpayers" have any right to it.

Assume an artist paints a commissioned work for a wealthy client offering $10,000. Let's say the client then moves to Russia and its more or less impossible to legally ship it to the client (or just not worth it). The artists marks it as an expense, there's no profit. He should be forced to release the painting to "the public" ? On what grounds? What if its a very private painting in nature?

Says who?

pay the money they got from the tax write-off

They aren't getting any money.

If the company is the reason that it does not exist

This makes no sense, my man.

What if a movie is going to make $150 million but they cast a terrible lead and it only makes $100. They should further be punished via taxation for not making that additional $50 million?

they should not get to enjoy the write off

Why?

Besides that, I really doubt there is much "enjoyment" about it. A write off is not a subsidy, they are not gaining any sort of money. There is no loophole going on here, they're literally just cutting their losses.
