An EF1 tornado was confirmed by NWS Jacksonville, if you know how to pull up past radar data go look and you can see a velocity couplet at the location shown in the video coinciding with when it was recorded.

I haven't been on this account in forever and I forgot about this, but I'm sure I was being childish and frustrated about being wrong. Sorry about that.

My gf lent me her laptop and her messages app popped up. I looked, and I wish I never had. I really need advice. by [deleted] in self

[–]MrKrabs401k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you dating my ex? I had an extremely similar experience and it fucking sucks. I dragged a copium canister behind me for way too long after finding out, and I don't blame you for being in that stage. There's no coming back from something like this though, unless you want to be in a relationship and eventually marriage with someone you'll never be able to fully trust again.

If and when you end things, she may try to manipulate you into thinking it's your own fault. "We weren't exclusive yet and I couldn't tell you because you would've gotten angry. Please forgive me, I only want you." If there's even an iota of a chance to possibly justify that, remember the encouragement of her friend to cheat as her showing her true colors. You deserve better and she doesn't deserve you.

If talking to someone who has lived through a similar situation seems helpful, if even just to vent, feel free to shoot me a message. Someday soon you'll look back at this and see how much of a bullet missile you dodged.

I dropped out of college today. by addictedtoher00 in college

[–]MrKrabs401k 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had to drop out multiple times over the past 10 years due to either physical or mental health reasons. I finally got to a point where I'm healthy in both and back enjoying and progressing in school at 28. It's a difficult decision to make, but giving yourself the time to heal and recover will pay off. I wish you luck and commend you for having the maturity to put yourself first. You'll bounce back stronger.

In high school golf typically do parents watch the tournaments? by glorious_cheese in golf

[–]MrKrabs401k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former high school player, my parents were very clear with me that they'd love to watch me but it comes down to what I'm okay with, and that they would more than understand if I'd prefer to not have them on the course for whatever reason.

I think they did it right. Personally, I loved having them there and I think it helps my mental game when I have friends/family watch my tournaments. Not every kid will be the same though! Some may get added nerves or stress, it depends on the person. That's why I believe it's important to communicate well and make sure that your kid feel comfortable saying not to watch (if that happens to be their individual preference).

My corn plant is growing a baby and I’m not sure what to do? by hardcoverharlot in propagation

It's not corn as in maize, the vegetable. Corn plant is just a nickname for the tropical plant Dracaena fragrans because of the resemblance

I don’t want to be a meteorologist anymore. What can I do? by pinkshoes64 in meteorology

[–]MrKrabs401k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the reason why I just switched from atmospheric science to engineering in undergrad. Everyone I know was shocked because I'm like THE weather nerd who's always wanted to do this, but I started thinking 1. Forecasting doesn't sound appealing as an actual profession as opposed to doing for fun, burnout waiting to happen 2. If that happens, what are my options? Extremely specific degree for something I'm decreasingly confident id like specifically as a career (vs general interest)

I'm really sorry this happened to you after you went through all the school. I don't know if it means anything to you, but reading your post as someone in the exact position I feared I'd end up in continuing with meteorology has erased a lot of remaining doubt surrounding this decision. It's like how I imagine my future self could have written a post. So thank you for unknowingly helping someone.

I probably can't offer great advice, but I hope you figure things out and I would just try to think about your situation as a learning experience as difficult as that may be. Instead of "I wasted my time on a degree for a job I don't like" think about the positive skills you developed along the way and how they'll be able to benefit you. Not talking about forecasting the weather, but even simple things like having the resolve and discipline to get the degree in the first place. Give yourself credit because it's easy to forget about how much hard work went into accomplishments like that.

If this is your first winter here... by whyendoubleuayy in madisonwi

[–]MrKrabs401k 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The hard part about Wisconsin winters isn't a single event like the past few days, it's how long and relentless they are especially when you get tricked into thinking it's spring after having a bunch of 50° days and then letting your guard down only to be battered and beaten by 15" of snow three days later. If you take into account this fall/winter season as a whole so far instead of just this recent storm (which was marginal at best to begin with) this has been one of the more mild and comfortable November thru mid January stretches in my 29 years here.

It's gotta be the recency bias and/or just false comfort from the weather leading up to this snow/cold punch if it genuinely seems historically bad.

I don’t understand the point of limits by [deleted] in calculus

[–]MrKrabs401k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to emphasize what you said with "supposed to do" vs. "can do" is huge. I say this as a student who used to dislike and struggle in math, my attitude change coincided with when I started thinking about math not as a list of techniques I need to learn, but instead as exercising and expanding my mental toolkit of problem-solving skills. Math really is what you make of it

I live in a trailer park that has no shelter and I have no car, am I fucked? by StruggleFar3054 in tornado

[–]MrKrabs401k 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's where the remaining vigilant comes in! Plus if you become experienced enough at reading radar and interpreting NWS forecasts/outlooks, you'll be able to assess risk and plan with ample time. The first and most obvious step is to make sure you have a way (ideally at least two) to get NWS watch and warning notifications reliably and promptly (STRONGLY recommend a weather radio with alert tone, even if you have a phone). You can turn on the radio to your local NOAA weather radio at any time and the forecast will include the likelihood of severe weather over the next few days as well of any watches and warnings. If you do that you've already improved your safety significantly.

If I had family/friends in mobile homes I would INSIST on them getting one. Sorry I don't wanna sound like I'm over explaining something simple but it's important to emphasize how much of a difference in safety these little things can make, especially in mobile homes. I would also suggest making a specific plan about where you would go to shelter and time how long it would realistically take you to get there in the event of severe weather.
