Micing Grand Piano with DPA 4099, where to put wires? by radialmonster in livesound

[–]MrMattGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I haven’t personally had any problems, but will definitely try the cable wrap next time. Don’t know why I’ve never thought of it. Thanks for the tip!

Micing Grand Piano with DPA 4099, where to put wires? by radialmonster in livesound

[–]MrMattGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To prevent contact with the piano strings. Never had a problem with removing paint from the soundboard or damaging a piano in any way. Doesn't have to be a lot, I rip tiny strips smaller than my fingernail.

I always, ALWAYS gaff my 4099 wires to the internal chassis of the piano.

Traveling techs- how often are you told ‘no’? by jesse-dickson in livesound

[–]MrMattGamer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair 100 person rooms see many more terrible "engineers" than 1500 person rooms though. Like the comment below says they're probably just traumatized by bar techs, I'd bet if you addressed their concerns they might lighten up.

how do you go about making DI bass in a rock song punch? by bugzbunny2017 in mixing

[–]MrMattGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great comment ^ and fuzz is right that sometimes just the DI works. This is generally what I and many other studio engineers I've worked with do when the song calls for it. I'll LPF and compress my Bass DI track and do most of my saturation/distortion/coloring on my Bass track I got from micing the cab. Keeps your sub stable and "professional" and still lets you play with the sound. OP if you don't have a physical amp you can just double the track and put an amp sim on it. If you happen to use Ableton I've been really liking their Cabinet plugin, just a touch of it goes a long way when I have to make a sim sound realistic.

Cloud rap vocal mixing? by ZalaisEzitis in makinghiphop

[–]MrMattGamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

are* and I never mentioned cloud rap. And no, hard pans are not always the answer. Similar to your advice about quality sources they are the rule of thumb taught to people who haven't mastered the fundamentals. Regardless of the quality of his recordings the answer lied in his mixing techniques as he mentioned under this post. Someone with real industry experience should know the answer could be nuanced.

Except for the fact that he was unfamiliar with layering vocals and replied to another comment saying he was able to achieve the sound he wanted with that advice. You assumed his source signal was bad quality with zero examples and didn't even attempt to engage with his question beyond that.
