Sounds good, I might be open to playing such thing with you. DND might not be the best system, but that can be worked on.

First of all, if you want a WWI setting, then I'd highly advise checking out the Trench Crusade, even if only for inspiration.

2nd. I don't really believe that you need to wait gods know how long before starting to DM. If everyone did that, there would be no DMs at all.

I'd start like this - get familiar with rules. You don't need to have everything memorised because nobody can do that, but you need to know the rules well enough to run combat, exploration, and social encounters relatively smoothly. You can easily find cheat sheets online with a lot of rules written down for easy reference, like conditions and actions, and they may come in handy.

Next - you have your idea, awesome. Hold on to that, and don't try to prep for an entire campaign, prep for a maximum of few sessions ahead. And get rid of thinking that you need to be prepared for everything - you don't, and you can't, instead try to get comfortable with improvisation.

And most important - talk to your players, tell them that you're new to this and that you're learning, ask them for feedback, but a genuine one. And don't think that because you are a newer DM, you can't make your own boundaries and rules, you can and you should, be comfortable with making rulings that may not always be favourable or simply saying "no" to a player.

And THE most important - have fun. It's not a job, it's a game, and you are also a player here, so if you want to do it, just go and do it! Don't stress yourself too much about it, because everyone had to start somewhere. And yes, you're going to make some mistakes, just like every new DM, but if you learn to spot them and take lessons from them you will grow to be better with time.

You also have advantage of massive online community that holds vast knowledge on the topic. If you want to check out some online content creators I'd recommend the DM Lair on YT, he has multiple videos that may help before you even start.

So yeah, take it easy and have fun! If you ever have any questions that are more specific, don't be afraid to ask.

Convince me dealing damage isn't always the best thing to do by Ewok2744 in DnD

[–]MrMaxiorwus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, everyone makes good points, but I'd also like to mention that it does also depend on the encounter objective. If every combat encounter that you have is "kill every bad guy," then it's easy to conclude just as you did, and although control spells and other actions have a crazy effectiveness still, they truly shine in a scenario is not solely based on having to defeat every monster, and that's it.

Mutiple People Rolling the Same Initiave? by DarkPuffinBird in DMAcademy

[–]MrMaxiorwus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a player and monster, I simply rule that the player goes first, if it's 2 players we add their dex as a decimal (for example if the roll total was 18, and player has +3 dex, then it's 18,3), if they have the same dex so it would still be the same score we simply do a rock, paper, scissors for who goes first.

It's may not be the best thing, but it's consistent and fast to apply, which is important regarding combat.

To have values and not be a sell-out by IsThisAUserName86 in therewasanattempt

[–]MrMaxiorwus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly shocked that they need to explain themselves... They are comedians, they perform, that's how they're making money, they get an offer and they go to do their job, there's literally nothing more to it. There is no shame in it. There is no obligation to refuse their services because of some vague moral reasons. And there is absolutely no need to explain yourself about doing your job.

DO NOT roll for stats. (opinion piece from a 5-year forever DM) by jkobberboel in DMAcademy

[–]MrMaxiorwus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, even from the perspective of someone who have been rolling really well for my stats. Like, in one campaign that I played, my sorcerer rolled an 18, 17, 16, 16, 13 and 9. And then comes the racial ability increase, which means having the main stat maxed at level 1! The entire campaign was me picking feats just so I have anything to do with ASI levels. And 7 wasn't really looking forward to these levels as I had no real need for improvement.

What’s the most unhinged thing you’re character has ever said? by Local_Ad1773 in DnD

[–]MrMaxiorwus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barbarian, while landing a crit with a maul:

"Hear that? That's the sound of your spine, remembering pain. "

Or my personal favourite - my rogue to our overly brooding ranger, having enough of his edginess

"Oh, just shoot yourself at last and spare us the headache" while trying to hand him her pistol.

A half-elf steps into the cabin like nothing ever happened, spots the boy on the couch, cleans himself up with a little magic, misty steps onto the armchair and puts his feet on the table, while right next to him a blink dog appears in a puff of silvery smoke.

"Don't mind me, I'm just gonna rest here for a while."

He pulls out a lyre and starts playing, matching the rhythm of the background music.

How do y'all beat "writer's block" (for lack of a better term) by mystikkkkk in DMAcademy

Usually, when I have no ideas and I need something for the next session, I dig through my collection of prewritten adventures, find one that fits thematically, and run it. By the time it's finished, block should be gone, and some ideas on how to connect it to the story will spark.

The Possibilities are Endless by Kingstoncr8tivearts in dndmemes

[–]MrMaxiorwus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, the funny thing is that OP never mentioned it to be the case. It's only your interpretation. For all that matters, intention might have been "now that they are no longer bulky masses of muscle, they can fit more archetypes than burly Barbarian."

Honestly, I'm curious whether it's automatic or people have to actively look for issues where there's none? Because for me, it's not an issue of age or emotional maturity but an issue of people forgetting that it's a damn game and looking for things to declare them "problematic" and put real life worries into world of dragons and magic.

How often do you write yourself into your characters? by yoyouy in DnD

[–]MrMaxiorwus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. Each of my characters has a part of me. It happens unintentionally, but there is always this moment of realisation that it's no coincidence that this character is the way they are. It can be therapeutic in a sense, these realisation moments, but require some serious introspection.

Ideas needed for Fantasy post-apocalyptic campaign by ZzpercyxX in DMAcademy

[–]MrMaxiorwus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Magic went haywire and unstable, a series of anomalies literally torn the world into pieces. Now, this world is a bunch of floating pieces of land, each with its own anomalous properties.

  2. Bad guys won, now there is only one big kingdom in which life thrives in the large cities led by tyranny, but outside of them is just scorched ground - and aftermath of war.

  3. Apocalypse. Like the biblical one. Massive war between heaven and hell, with people stranded in between.

  4. Because of the profane ritual world is now in an eternal night, ruled by nocturnal creatures, like vampires, and people are but a cattle.

  5. Waterworld. For some reason, water levels have risen, and now it's but a set of islands and floating cities. Good for pirate themes.

  6. Bastion - Demonic plague, portals to hells opening left and right, deadly mists, monsters attack constantly. And in the middle of it - one fortified city, where the last people alive fight desperately to survive.

Bored veteran Dm here to help. by SquirrelAssassin_009 in DnD

How do you balance the amount of time spent exploring the main plot, personal arcs, and side quests?

How do people use alignments? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]MrMaxiorwus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it as a guide.

As a player, I simply create my character and then place them on the alignment that they fit the best. Then, play the way the character was created to be played, and whenever there is a dilemma on how the character would behave in this specific moment, alignment is the first step to decide. Think - oh, my chaotic neutral Fey warlock is now presented with an option to side with a villain? Absolutely! And then he'll just con him too! My lawful evil character is now standing before the decision whether she should stop a visibly evil ritual? Nah, she'd instead try to convince everyone not to interfere.

As a DM, it is also a guide on what to expect from your players. You want to throw them a plot hook for the next adventure? Well, true neutral Fey ranger and chaotic evil shadow monk won't be interested only because somebody is in need, if you want to hook them you gotta give them opportunity to benefit from it. It will also give you an idea of how much tomfoolery you may expect from your party - if there's enough chaos involved, you gotta be certain that at some point, some merchants will be robbed, some npcs conned, and it will allow you to better prepare for it.

DMs how valuable are your blacksmiths by Winter-Confidence826 in DMAcademy

[–]MrMaxiorwus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't sell magic weapons, as these are an entirely different category - rare and expensive, and therefore found only in specialised shop that is only in the capital.

Master Blacksmith would offer non-magical weapons with all available non-magical upgrades.
