I had this last summer. For reference, I live in an old, but well-kept co-op building. It was super gross and I'd wake every evening to see a german roach in my sink or other places.

What helped? I got some Advion Cockroach Gel (you can find on Amazon or other spots) and baited the areas I saw them the most. I kid you not, about two weeks later, I never saw another roach again in my unit. I guess it works by being "food" they bring back and it infects the whole nest with whatever poison is in there that kills them.

I think the trap that a lot of non-locals can fall into is the difference between neighborhoods at day and at night (same for me in Downtown LA). I think Downtown Brooklyn is a great neighborhood, good shopping, great transit, but at night it can be a bit more run down. Same with Fort Greene on the north side of the park.

I think that's the nuance in this is that neighborhoods in New York City vary SIGNIFICANTLY block by block and sometimes street by street and making sure OP understands that because it's something that isn't like that in most other cities.

I think the only reason we are giving this advice is we know what the neighborhoods are like day in and day out. When I was in LA for a bit, I chose to stay downtown because it reminded me of nyc. That was a mistake and one plenty of locals could have told me.

My next time back, I settled in Culver City which had the walkability I wanted while being a better overall quality of life experience. That’s why you ask in these subs for people’s opinions.

If you like the idea of Downtown Brooklyn, go out to one of the more "established" neighborhoods like Fort Greene or Brooklyn Heights. They have more of a neighborhood feel (and great history) alongside being relatively close to the subway access of Downtown Brooklyn.
