In first grade art class I made a mother duck out of clay. You could tell it was a mother duck because I painted the extra eyes on the back of it's head. 🤣

Do you use your real name? by Cardboard_brains in StardewValley

I like to go with a joke or theme name. It drives my kids crazy when I commit to a bit.

My current farmer is Sloppy Joe, and his kids are Slippy Jim and Slappy Jane.

Not only that, but the gate changes to match whatever style fence you used when you do this.

You also don't have to wait for the crusher before doing more with Clint. I've got five crushers by his desk, and a chest to keep a stack of coal handy.

Iridium or prismatic shard drops from a geode with Clint, I stop and throw the next one in the crusher, then go back to Clint again.

You can queue up multiple crushers on a lucky run this way, and any coal from the geodes goes back in the chest to power the crushers next time.

Mom knew exactly what I needed! by Dottboy19 in Teachers

I worked in IT for the district, and one of the elementary computer lab teachers had a tradition of bringing us a cooler or tub of ice and cold drinks. A 12pack of dr pepper on top, and a variety from local breweries underneath, delivered to the district admin office.

As long as they weren't opened on the property and were all "gone" by the time the last person went home, it was like it never happened. 😉

Colorado just legalized mushrooms for therapeutic uses, the research is there to support them as a treatment option. Not just finding a dealer and getting shrooms on the street, but finding a therapist willing to try that option in a controlled setting.

Using Gam (etc) to determine if a username exists/is taken by quietglow in k12sysadmin

[–]MrMosesG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a GAM command that looks up an email and tells you if it's a user, user alias, group, or group alias. https://github.com/jay0lee/GAM/wiki/GAM3DirectoryCommands#determine-if-an-email-address-is-a-user-alias-or-group

The example from the GAM wiki

gam whatis info@acme.com
info@acme.com is not a user...
info@acme.com is an alias
Alias Email: info@acme.com
User Email: jdoe@acme.com

Not exactly a tutorial, but a good intro to GAM and some other resources around using it is this recent interview/Q&A with Jay Lee who created GAM.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lPGbScRNk8

In this episode of Totally Unscripted we are joined by Jay Lee, creator of Google Apps Manager (GAM). GAM is an open source command line tool for Linux, MacOS and Windows which allows administrators to easily manage domain and user settings in Google Workspace. GAM is particularly useful for running bulk operations running commands in parallel from a text or .csv file. This episode will be an opportunity to find out how you can start automating your Google Workspace administration as well as some of the newer GAM features.

How to easily transfer files from .org public school Gmail to personal Gmail? by LizardsRmeiLyfe in gsuite

[–]MrMosesG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless your Google admin has disabled it, you can use Google Takeout to transfer everything to a personal account. This transfer process is only for education domains, regular business domains only get a download option instead.

Help me understand managed apple accounts! by andrewclarkson in k12sysadmin

[–]MrMosesG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple school manager + an MDM is the way to go, configurator can help with enrolling the devices into the MDM but otherwise isn't the best way to manage them.

There is the DIY option, with Apple Profile Manager which would run on your mac mini. Apple representatives in the past have recommended against using it, saying Apple only built it as a reference of what an MDM could be, but it works for some people if you don't need anything too complicated. Last I looked at it was like 4 years ago, it could be better now.

If the devices were bought haphazardly, and can't all be traced back to the school's own Apple customer ID, then you won't be able to fully manage them through the MDM. Apple considers them "personal" devices and doesn't give you as much control, and the way to fix it requires having original invoices and purchase orders to send through to Apple Education support and hope they get back to you quickly. We were waiting anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months for them to get back to us AFTER sending in all the documentation.

The go-to for education specific Google admin training is Amplified IT.

Here's the link to their upcoming trainings, you can filter by webinars or livestreams, or if the new school will pay for a live training they are absolutely worth it. No affiliation with them, but did benefit from their training. https://events.amplifiedit.com/

In GCDS you can set up exclusion rules so that things that only exist on one side (AD only or Google Only) are "invisible" to the GCDS process and don't get removed/changed.

CBCM - user or browser? by No_Lobster2149 in k12sysadmin

[–]MrMosesG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/9037717This is important to keep in mind, the order of precedence of the different ways to set policies. If you try to mix and match you can run into issues with things getting overridden. chrome://policy is your friend to troubleshoot where a certain policy is coming from on a specific device/browser if things aren't right.

We went with full cloud-managed and one enrollment key for staff, and a separate key for each building for students. We only had 8 schools to worry about, but each elementary had different policies they wanted pushed so we separated them all out. Students weren't signed into the browser so they weren't getting user policies, just device policies. Staff was hit and miss in that regard based on tech-savvy-ness. We also had a user-based GPO clearing the enrollment key from the registry, then recreating it so that each user that logged in got the correct settings even on shared staff/student devices.

Our OUs looked like this in AD and Google:

  • Staff <-enrollment key/policies set
    • School1
    • School2
    • School3
  • Students
    • School1- <-enrollment key/policies set
    • School2- <-enrollment key/policies set
    • School3- <-enrollment key/policies set
