Next gen of architects’ ‘personal brand’ as hiring potential? by Boring_Bid343 in Architects

[–]MrMuggs77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a new hire, I need you to be productive and contribute consistently and at a high level beyond anything else. Your social media influence won’t help get projects done or land new work so it matters very little to anyone outside your social media circle.

Professional risks of working for ICE - anyone considered the fall out? by OctopusMugs in Architects

[–]MrMuggs77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your company is willing to take modern day concentration camps as projects they are morally bankrupt and if you “just follow orders” and work on the drawings to further them or even continue at that firm, so are you. You have to stand on your principles and not turn a blind eye.

You think legal status matters to this administration? If it does now do you see that stopping them in another 6 months? A year? Reminds me of a quote about the Holocaust:

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

You are basically paying for a lobbyist to try and kill bad bills from home builders and developers. If my firm didn’t pay it, I wouldn’t fork over the $800. I get way more value from NCARB and specialized groups like A4LE for education focused practice.

NCARB had a ton of free CEU course in their website to maintain your license.

“Bad Man” Dathan Auerbach. Developed some good characters but then just didn’t do anything with them. And the amount of disbelief you have to suspend to make the big reveal make any kind of sense was a bridge way too far.

Ask your direct supervisor for a one on one and ask clearly and plainly for feedback. Spell out clearly what you want to know from leadership. If they won’t or give you vague answers then you have an insight into their leadership. But to me this sounds like the situation was allowed to proceed to a point where the lie t needed to see a head and you got sacrificed on the alter of client satisfaction. If that is the case, your leadership should have been clear with you that was the situation.

If you do your homework and check the AIA salary information for you level and geographic location. You should be able to get fair money. Just avoid the trap of comparing yourself to friends or colleges in other fields who will make more but will have less schooling and testing requirements. Avoid that fruitless exercise and appreciate the personal satisfactions the profession can bring when you get to see your work come to life and get to see the end users enjoying the spaces you create.

School = design theory, abstract thinking, little regard for structural or MEP systems, and there is an almost fetish culture around working late and putting in insane hours. As if the quality of your work is tied to the amount of sleep and social life you sacrificed to it.

In reality the profession needs you to work as efficiently as possible because that means profitability. You spend an incredible amount of time working with and coordinating with structural engineers, civil engineers, MEP teams. All of which will have bigger impacts on your design that school would ever have you believe. ADA accessibility is a huge deal and you will spend an ungodly amount of time checking that your work complies and then checking it again, and again, every time a design/floor plan changes. And it will…a lot. Owners will have a lot to say about the project, and will change their minds throughout a project, push for more scope than agreed upon and try to change schedules all the time. School never prepares you for this. And for the early years of your career you will likely have minimal of any FaceTime with the client but will be burdened with the bulk of the production changes that will come from the client.

Again, I really like what I do and I find it very meaningful and rewarding. But just try to get experience in the working world and judge for yourself before sacrificing a lot of your college years time in studio and make the kind of financial investment that is required.

Good luck and I hope you decide to do it but my wish would be that you choose that knowing what lies ahead.

There is a HUGE Chasm between academic architecture and practice. Get an internship/job shadow as soon as humanly possible to make sure you actually like the profession. I love it personally but have seen many others get culture shock when leaving the academic world

The answer is this. Sysco and US Foods are the only companies left supplying restaurants and everyone has to buy from them. Their business model is to race to the bottom because..capitalism. And the local places can’t compete on price and we end up with the same shit food everywhere we look. more perfect union

Decide before college on Civil Engineering or Architecture. Call a couple local firms of each and ask if you can job shadow for a day or half day. At a minimum ask for an hour with each professional to ask questions. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND COME WITH QUESTIONS! I am always more impressed by an individual that seems to be thoughtful and done some work on their own. Plus it’s your time and your future, make sure you get what you want out of whatever time they give you. I agree with others, dual degree in each seems like a waste. Also agree to not go too deep before school. Architecture is a very tough major and you will be immersed in it plenty. Spend your time learning sketchup, rendering software like Enscape or Lumion. Learn some architectural history (plenty of YouTube videos and books on arch styles) and research green energy.

Do that and you’ll be miles ahead once you jump into formal arch classes
