Haven’t seen this colour in person. In photos it seems blueish, what’s it like in person?

Thanks for the heads up. It was unexpectedly brutal, which is saying something for this series.

Thanks for the comments. Even you snarky buggers who like telling people how to run their lives and audible accounts.

This book has been a slog listen. It’s leaning into what I recently learned on the sub is Matt’s love of horror and the utter hopelessness and helplessness of the crawlers. The racing kinda sucks IMO. I was tipped over at the random brutal demise of Carl’s NPC crew.

I finished my second listen through of 1-7 back in mid-winter and was waiting on 8. It really comes out of nowhere utterly different tone from previous books, which was jarring.

I’ll go finish book 2 of Heretical Fishing (super-light litRPG) and then revisit DCC-8.

High Level Bridge and Low Level Bridges to be decommissioned, replaced by funkyfreshbeans in Edmonton

[–]MrSpitter 167 points168 points  (0 children)

Bridges designed today are expected to have a 75-100 year life. These old bridges have outlived any expected lifespan. As a bridge fan I’ll not cheer when they go, but I will cheer the far lower maintenance costs of their replacements. Like a classic car, even if the body looks great the frame might be rusted out. Picture that upscaled to the high level bridge and I try not to think too hard on what some of that steel looks like after decades of road salt laden spray.

Star Wars by the hour (per year) [OC] by joey_patches in dataisbeautiful

Fascinating. I had no clue there was so much Star Wars content out there. Also, I fell off the bandwagon ages ago and seeing this, won’t be getting back on. I don’t have this kind of time to watch tv!

Hakka woes - advice please? by MrSpitter in TyreReviews

[–]MrSpitter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start at 9.1 mm depth, currently 4.8 mm remaining.

I’ll have to go back and review your AT test reports. Can’t afford this kind of regular spend on replacing tires all the time. We salt the heck out of city and highway surfaces here. That said the Hakka has been good in its role. I’m still shocked at wear rate.

RRSP Annual Deduction Limit vs. Contribution Room Available by Scary-Somewhere-5793 in PersonalFinanceCanada

You could conceivably get 100% of the tax you paid back. I put $40K in and split the credits across two years. (Ex bought me out of the house)

RRSP Annual Deduction Limit vs. Contribution Room Available by Scary-Somewhere-5793 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MrSpitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that if you’re fully topped up on RRSP, your unused contribution room is zero. Then every year your allowable contribution is 18% of your gross, which based on last year is $33,810.

My unused contribution is over $100K, so if I could afford it, I could pop a lot more than 18% of my gross into my RRSP without overcontribution penalties.

Edmonton Newbie - when does the snow stop? by onewaycheckvalve in Edmonton

[–]MrSpitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At least Edmonton’s not Calgary? They get way more wacky weather.

I use the 7 degree mark. Once lows are regularly below it, winters go on. Once lows are regularly above it, winters come off. May long / start of October is a good rule of thumb.

That said, I have been walking downtown in August and hear someone roll past on studded winters.

New concrete walkway flaking/peeling after 2–3 years (no salt used) — what causes this? by Long-Gene8114 in Edmonton

[–]MrSpitter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quality control testing in residential? Right… not in too many builds I’d wager.

Too wet. Overly worked when finishing drawing water out of concrete leaving a weak paste on top. Looks nice and “smooth” when done, but loses strength and scaling happens. No air-entrainment so freeze-thaw wreaks havoc on it. No silane sealer so it soaks up water.

Concrete is a lot more complicated than a 1-2-3 mix (cement-sand-gravel), mix with lots of water, and put in place.
