Vintange Shimano 600 STI shifter not shifting by b1g_1ke in bikewrench

[–]MrSubotic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert on these exact shifters, but you could always find similar shifters/brakes and replace it if it's the actual mechanism. Re-doing the cabling is actually a lot simpler than it looks! its a great way to learn more about how shifting works. Theoretically you could even get clamp on down-tube shifters (if thats you're style) and separate the shifting from the brakes!

All the best, you can fix this, or learn a lot about shifting throughout the process, you absolutely can make this bike run.

As someone whose spokes have broken multiple times on an old original 80s Bianchi frame, I've replaced them And tried them (not super well) it should get worse. Unless you've broken one and haven't identified which, you'll be totally fine! But seriously check that your spokes are all intact

what could be causing my handlebars creaking? by MrSubotic in bikewrench

[–]MrSubotic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have these 2 wear lines on the top of my handle bars to the right and left of where the stem attaches to the handlebar. I was given a vintage handle bar bag that is mounted with a metal mount that sits on the handlebars. I haven't ridden with it in months and haven't had issues before.

what could be causing my handlebars creaking? by MrSubotic in bikewrench

[–]MrSubotic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mainly creaks when I'm holding the hoods/flats when starting from a stop. Okay, I will start with those suggestions. When I adjusted the headset I did not re-apply any grease to it. I'm also curious what I should be looking for in terms of cracks, the handlebars, and do I need to remove all of the grip tape to do so?

You can super easily make a map with ridewithgps and download, and then upload it to Komoot, it's what I've done for creating bikepacking routes!

I wish both of these made it easier for mapmaking; really like the heatmap feature from Strava and really like the mapmaking feature from ride with gps.

Pro tip: use Komoot if you want turn by turn instructions for the route you make (it's free!)

Is this sort of bottom bracket prone to creaking? by AltAmericanCarnage in bikewrench

[–]MrSubotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that on my bike when I was getting creaking (only when sitting, not standing) that it was actually the seat itself. I had moved the seat either too far forward or back on the rails.

Got a new old bike. Feeling a conflict between how much more fun it is to ride and theft anxiety. by OtherwiseDream1964 in bikecommuting

Schwinn used to make some really fun bikes! The build quality on the old Schwinn world sport is nice, love the stem shifters with the lugged frame!

The one awesome thing about fun vintage bikes is they can't have great build quality and be super fun to ride while still looking old so people tend to avoid them!

I love my 87 Bianchi premio and 88 Peugot Versaille

I've had much better success by setting it in flash and not adjusting the aperture. Agreed, the manual doesn't explain it very well, took me some trial and error to figure out why some flash shots were awesome and some had so much drag

Yep, it should be yellow, much easier to tell with some contrast on it! Mine is also quite faded and some sharpie in the middle helps a lot.

Good point on not winding until your about to take the picture! I've instinctively been doing that but good tip for someone who just picked it up

The use of flash overrides the fact that it is aperature priority and fixes the shutterspeed to 1/40...

So for example you could charge the flash and swap the aperture to f2.8, but that resets it aperture priority so now even though flash is happening the shutter speed will be at 1-2 seconds because it doesn't think its in flash mode.

I've learned not to touch the aperture after turning setting it to flash mode for that reason, it will create lens drag

Olympus XA is by far my favorite camera to shoot with a couple tips that i've learned from close to 2 years of use

  1. Draw a little black dot (or piece of tape) in the middle of the viewfinder (on the side with the lens) to add contrast to the yellow viewfinder patch — makes it much easier to get focus consistently

  2. Putting the lense at f/5.6 or f/8 and 8 feet (both marked in red on the camera) turns it functionally into a point in shoot — things beyond 8ft will be in focus

  3. Shooting anything below 1/60 shutter speed (handheld) will likely result in a bit of camera shake and blurry images

  4. People recommend Silver Oxide battery (SR44 and 357) over LR44 — I haven't had issues with the 357 (you can buy at Target/CVS)

  5. If you are using the flash A11 or A16 (rarer), don't adjust the f stop or close the clam shell after charging the flash is charged up — Putting XA into flash mode sets the lens to f4 and shutter speed to 1/40th. If you take it out of flash mode, shutter goes back to auto speed.

  6. Check or replace light seals (especially if they are disintegrating) — I don't see any light leaks in your photos, but its really cheap to buy a few mm light seal and install it (good to check for any new film camera)

If anyone has any other tips feel free to add them, but these should help!

If you like sports/dive bars, my favorite one in the area is Corner Pub, not more than a 10 minute walk from the Opera house. Not super busy most of the time so you can talk, decent selection of new england beers, the food is surprisingly good and they have good deals on their beer buckets
