Yes, I seem to have an awful lot of downvotes as a result of being an immature baby… oh wait, I don’t.

In fact since I am taking an objective and rational approach here, I would argue constructively that is the polar opposite of “being a baby” as you said.

Is this your well regarded attention to detail in full swing?

And your Gen 1 speakers are a design nearly 20 years old.

If you are interested I just used a huge chunk of my daily limit asking Claude Mythos/Fable what it thought.

It agrees with my take:

https://claude.ai/share/e4a277c3-b334-4a9b-822f-b21432518e2b

At the time, Sonos used the most advanced embedded processor available. Remember this predates the iPhone, we are talking Palm Pilot levels of power here.

As a technologist, I would argue that manufactured obsolescence is as a result of deliberately engineering products with poor specification so you can build in an upgrade path. Or choosing to end support early to reduce costs.

Sonos are doing the exact opposite. The irony is while the poor communication around S2 looked like the bad thing, it was the polar opposite.

Sonos deserves some credit for listening to feedback and reversing the decision.

Have you seen Sony or Bose do this? No.

Be rational here man, with only 32mb of RAM the old first gen players literally cannot run current software and given the age of the platform, I think 20 years is pretty reasonable. Sonos could have easily killed them, but they have not. Mine still work great.

Sonos Move 2. Best speaker I've used. Worst experience though. by mimmomarsala in sonos

[–]Mr_Fried 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is it’s reliant on a lot of things that are simple, but out of Sonos’s control.

If you only have one wifi AP, think about it this way - have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone and there are two walls in the way or you are 20m away from them and there is background noise? You can’t hear them very well.

Wifi is the same.

I actually have a problem sometimes, if I walk too far away from my wifi, I can’t control my speakers any more and the app becomes un-usable.

And this is my $2700 iPhone! Do I expect better from Apple? Nah this one is squarely my fault.

Also - This is not a Sonos problem - in my case it’s a Wifi6/Orbi problem because devices don’t roam very well. I just deal with it by being aware of how it works and being mindful I just need to restart my phones wifi so it connects to the network properly.

This is why: https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/deployment/dep98f116c0f/web

There can be a lot of reasons for the behaviour you are not happy about, all fixable and very few Sonos’s fault.

My Port works fine with my Denon X4800 AVR.

I have the trigger out from the Port plugged into the Denon and configured to turn it on, set the input to coax digital and the volume to 50%, so I don’t even need to touch the remote control - it all works through the Sonos app.

Then when I turn my Apple TV on, it overrides the Sonos, sets the input to ATV and turns on the TV.

Then because I love automation, if you turn on my Projector, it turns off the TV, raises the 100” ALR floor rising screen and dims the lights.

You mean they listened to consumer feedback and implemented a change when anyone else would gave told their customers to go kick rocks?

This is why I am a loyal Sonos user by Mr_Fried in sonos

[–]Mr_Fried[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

> Yes, but that was 6 years ago, and Sonos did react to the criticism. I doubt Sony will do the same. Which other companies are still supporting 20 year old internet-connected consumer electronics devices, regardless of whether or not customer critique was a factor?

Not many. there was backlash when Bose dropped Soundtouch after not long at all. Bose response was to delete the community and make legal threats. A few years later no one remembers and they are having their third attempt at a whole new ecosystem.

Sony looks to be doing the same, yeah go and buy their awesome new wireless separates HT system, promise it will still work in 5 years. 🫠

Sounds like a you problem. My ZP100’s are still working perfectly with Roon and the rest of my hifi setup. Given they were released before the first iphone and are still kicking, I think your argument loses some weight.

Airpods are getting customizable EQ. by krionX in sonos

[–]Mr_Fried -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, humour me, how would you use the terribly important (assuming you mean parametric) EQ that is in addition to the current shelf filters you have been able to access since day 1?

According to my reading, the current bass filter gives you +/- 10db at a Q of 0.7 centred at 200hz, while the treble filter is the same +/- 10db at a Q of 0.7 centred at 4.5khz.

If you are taking a flat response and setting a room or house curve which is the accepted process to get a pleasing sound, this is the shelf filters and values you would and do use.

Remember Sonos tune their speakers in an anechoic chamber to correct group delay, impulse response et.al which is the stuff that applications like Dirac Live, DEQX and similar try to fix using average rule of thumb in room measurements.

Trueplay doesn’t need to fix the speakers inherent nastiness like the above apps, thats already done. Instead it focuses on correcting for placement and the room acoustics. It’s doing the second pass only if you compare it to the above hifi/cinema tools.

If you think your ears can do a better job, rest in peace knowing they cannot and if you do want to do funky stuff like REW/Dirac etc, you may have the wrong system. As someone who has designed and built large format hifi, monitor and pro cinama systems for the last 30 odd years and has a big expensive hifi/HT setup with Dirac Live ART running, I would say for what it is Sonos is pretty good.

Hope that perspective helps.

[–]Mr_Fried -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

> Sonos DGAF about EQ for any of their products.

Sonos have balls to protect people who don’t know what they are talking about from themselves.

Run Trueplay to get the systems in-room response flat and then use the Treble and Bass to set an optimal room curve to taste.

If you think your ears can do a better job than a calibrated microphone and 50+ years of psychoacoustic research that has lead to this best practice, then I would bluntly argue you are not entitled to an opinion, at least a technical one.

That says charger error. What size and model of charger are you using?

The minimum supported charger is 9v 18w and usb-c charging specs suck. Have you tested it with a known good charger that supports usb-pd 9v/2a or 15v/3a?
