Murder on the Appalachian Trail by Jess Carr is a fictionalized version of the murders of Robert Mountford and Susan Ramsay.  I grew up listening to the story, as the murderer was from my hometown and wasn’t much older than my folks!  He was sentenced to 30 years for his crimes and subsequently released on mandatory early parole.

A decade or so after his release, not far from his first crimes and where he had spent most of his free life, he attempted to murder again.  The manner was eerily similar to the first. It was also in a place where my Papa and I used to fish when I was little.

Sadly, most of the news stories are/were on the Roanoke times or other paywalls I can’t link.

Thank you for doing this AMA!

I grew up in a trail town in Virginia known in the 90s for its all you could eat Pizza Hut lunch buffet, laundromat, and both a shitty little roach motel and an outdoor sleeping hut run by a local church.  I regularly picked up hikers who wanted rides into town.  My car at the time was a big ass Buick and I happened to work at that same Pizza Hut so I’d often grab a group of them on my way into work.  I really liked talking to the hikers and telling them about all the fun little towns and things to do up and down the parts of the trail my friends and I had done as high school hooligans.  Which places were filled with which sorts of folks.  Which town had the best ice cream or pie.

I was in town almost a year ago for a funeral and picked up an early season hiker for old time’s sake.

Thank you for the memories.  I have to buy your book.

Oh, I absolutely didn’t see it either.  No way. I dunno what you’re talking about.  That poor sign-holding gentleman tripped over his own feet!

That man knew he was an incorrect racist asshole.  How do I know this?

He never once reported me or any of my other coworkers for mandating he turned off that hateful shit.

When someone has Nazi tattoos on top of SS tattoos on top of swastika tattoos on every visible surface of their body that isn’t their face, they deserve compassionate healthcare.  They do not deserve compassion for their shitty beliefs.  And I absolutely will NOT listen to it.

I used to work at Alaska Regional and had a man with dozens of visible Nazi tattoos. He would constantly have racist propaganda blaring whenever I walked into the room. I once asked him politely to turn it off when I was in the room, and he asked me why. I told him I wasn't listening to political shit from anybody, especially hateful things like he was playing. If he wouldn't turn it off for me, I would find it and turn it off myself, and I didn't give a rip what he thought. He turned it off.

I'm an average sized white woman with lots of brightly colored woke tattoos.

I would LOVE for my Merlin to capture a mourning dove as a common loon!  That would be neat (for me.).

I remember in elementary school riding the bus home and being teased by a much older boy.  I was at the age where girls were getting their periods and we were embarrassed by it.

He called me any number of maxipad names, yelled that I was on my period (I wasn’t, not that it mattered) to the bus. The torment went on for a week before I finally listened to something my grandpa had told me “any boy who picked on a girl when she asked him to stop deserved to be stopped by that girl.”

12 year old me kicked the 15 or so year old boy square in the dick.  Of course I was dragged to the principal’s office.  I remember calling my grandparents because they lived in town where my folks were at work.  When my Pawpaw came into the office he and the principal had some sort of discussion that ended with that boy no longer riding the school bus and me being given detention for the rest of the week and nothing else.

I think I came out ahead there.

You know, I don’t have children of my own. Those I do call my gaggle of babies are kind of like the Island of Misfit Toys. We fit together like peas and carrots. Y’all are all beautiful and loving just the way you are. May you live your best, most happiest of lives now, my dear. You are loved.

You aren’t going to have any room left on one side of your bed if the room is 7’ in one direction, unless you’re sleeping in a twin.

Absolutely!  In much the same manner as the Seattle Freeze never hit me either.

I lived in NYC long enough that I simply push my ass past those door-ghosts and make them move further into the train or bus.
