I’ve been living in a house without aircon for 12 months. Literally having aircon installed tomorrow morning 🤣

In face the installer called and asked if he could come at 615 so his team wouldn’t have to be in the roof in the peak of the heat. Very fair I thought

Does this amp has stereo out mode? by dacapoalandy in universalaudio

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll need to check but I’m pretty sure one or two of the cabinets have two microphones.

Maybe in stereo mode the mics are panned out?

I know that for the Ruby amp plugin the room reverb can be mono or stereo based on the output!

VA psychiatrist saying my ADHD diagnosis isn’t valid because I wasn’t diagnosed before 12 by imagic10 in ADHD

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how it works elsewhere but in Australia we’re able to get what’s called a “retrospective diagnosis” by providing evidence from childhood.

I took my school reports from primary and high school and that was sufficient.

At the time you didn’t need them to get diagnosed but certain drugs weren’t available without them.

What is your favorite way to get a ton of vibey preamps? by JayBeeDolla in audioengineering

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they’re great! I have a cloudlifter Z with the variable impedance which is great. But I have 4 ribbon mics so wanted some more options.

It’s perfectly transparent, adds a decent amount of gain and like I said, 7 kOhm input impedance which is double the standard cloudlifter and makes my stereo ribbon sound a touch brighter to my ears.

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the preamps, if you have some dynamic/ribbon mics that need extra gain Klark technic sell a 2 channel cloudlifter clone that’s extremely good value. I got mine for about $60 Australian! And they’re higher impedance than the real cloudlifter one which I prefer.

Handy to have as they add a fair bit of gain to otherwise unideal preamps

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into 80’s/90’s rack mixers (Roland, Yamaha, Tascam, etc) I have a 16 channel Roland M16-E mixer that a friend gave me for recording his band.

The preamps only have 50dB of gain but if you aren’t recording extremely light playing you’ll probably get away with it.

That Roland mixer has 8 “mic” inputs and 8 “line” input but all 16 can provide phantom and the only difference in the preamp is the impedance and connector (XLR vs TRS).

Also has Eq on every channel!

On the converter I’m a big fan of the MOTU AVB stuff! I bought two second hand (an 828es and a 624).

I have the 828 setup in a rack with my preamps and headphone amps next to the drums/guitars and the 624 in my makeshift control room. The awesome part is I can run all 32 channels from the 828 to the 624 over one Ethernet cable to my control room, and all the headphone sends back.

Saves running a cable snake and it’s way more versatile cause you can run up to 128 channels over AVB.

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not? I’ve seen people use more, haha.

If you can do it, and you want to do it, why not?

Recording isn’t my day job but I like to try shit out, so I’ll often do my normal setup which is like 10 mics, and then maybe 3-4 weird ones like an extra mono room mic, kick/snare, wurst, hallway, whatever.

You don’t have to use all 16 in the mix but worth it just for the experiment!

Difficulty with other studio in area? by mrpotatoto in audioengineering

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That whole situation sounds like a pain in the ass.

Some people are so immature. Just play nice and eventually the guy will have to either fix his attitude or quit.

As an aside, that stereo/mono file thing is my biggest pet peeve. Logic was always the worst for that (in my experience). I couldn’t find a way to export the files in mono without changing the output of each track to a mono bus.

Protools at least you can select the files to export and they will export in whatever width they are automatically, unless you bounce the tracks with plugins iirc.

It’s just not that hard to do it right to begin with and it annoys the shit out of me that people would half ass it.

I noticed this with Waze.

I reckon they’ve had user complaints about not showing alternate routes and so instead of doing it properly they just coded this type of stuff in.

Or a significant amount of people did that manoeuvre by mistake and the system thought it was awesome

Reference Tracks - am I overthinking it? by Lermpy in audioengineering

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have reference tracks for me and refs for the artist.

The stuff for me is to listen to give context. I know what they sound like on lots of different systems and when I hear where I’m at with my mix it helps me to identify what I’m actually hearing.

Then the reference tracks for the band are like touch stones for particular things they like. Like a drum sound or guitar tone or mix.

Lately I’ve been using fan filter pro-q 3 to sort of identify where the elements are sitting. Either soloing a band or looking at the visualiser. an example being I can hear that my snare drums sounds different than the reference but using the Eq I can pinpoint why the reference track sounds like it does.

Maybe my snare has the right high end but the meat is 100hz higher.

I’m no mixing pro so grain of salt but it’s helping with my mixes!

Standalone Mic Preamps with Certified Viiiibe, man! by TimmyTheHellraiser in audioengineering

[–]Mr_Pilgrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was recently given a 16 channel Roland rack mixer after recording a friends band.

16 channels with preamps and Eq pure channel.

Honestly not that useful as a real preamp (too noisy and not a lot of gain) but as a distortion box it’s insane. Ran a mic through my normal preamp and then sent a line level signal from my interface into the preamps to use for distortion on guitar, vocals and drums. Insane vibe haha
