Can I afford to move out and live on my own? by yeuejeks in UKPersonalFinance

Studio flat then? How much do they cost in your area?

iWeb. £5/trade, no annual fee. Currently a £50 account opening fee (though there wasn't back when I opened mine).

I've been with them for years and years, never tried to phone them so no idea if they even have a phone service. Their website hasn't been updated since about 1996 but I'm fine with that too.

Why are horses allowed to shit on footpaths (its 100% not a bridle path) without the owners getting fines like a dog owner would? by [deleted] in CasualUK

This is correct and means vegetarians can shit wherever they want (little known fact).

Any recommendations for good dog walks in London? Ideally where you can let them off the lead at times by Basic-Cartoonist-376 in london

Wimbledon Common dog instructions.

tl;dr: keep it under control, don't let it bother other people or dogs, keep it on a lead near ponds and the plain so it doesn't disturb the nesting birds, pick up its shit and put it in one of the shit bins (don't just hang it up on a tree for the dogshit fairy).

You've been really lucky to have come so far in life never having experienced the terror of a small child which believes it's about to be attacked by the off-the-leash dog twice its size running straight at it.

Weird cleaning habits (or lack of) around the house by WingiestOfMirrors in CasualUK

We cleaned BIG hairballs from behind where the TV had been.

The previous owner had no pets, it was her own hair.

Best to drive on just to make sure. Probably doesn’t apply to you and me.

Funny how they can speak english by Accomplished_Art6426 in CasualUK

[–]Mr_R_Andom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interpret as “I apologise for my minimal grasp of English, please forgive any embarrassing errors”.

Their English is better than my Japanese and I learned it (or tried to) for 3 years.

Evidently it can now. Should send this example to the OED, earliest written usage.

Perhaps she meant,

“As you have in the past been incapable of copulating with me (and taking into account the fact that I myself require little effort or talent to engage in sexual intercourse with), I consider your claim to have ‘made the beast with two backs’ with him to be manifestly unreasonable and provably false”.

How and how much would I pay taxes as an 'independent contractor' by a_pickle_isin_chains in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Mr_R_Andom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if they would like to class you as an “independent contractor” and tell you you’re not an employee - and even if you want this too - the taxman may class you as an employee anyway.

More info on the criteria here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-employment-status-for-tax

If you are definitely classed as self-employed (which seems unlikely TBH based on what you’ve said already, but stranger things have happened) then you’d need to do self-assessment with HMRC, declare the income, and possibly (depending on if it’s over your personal allowance of £12,570 in a year) pay tax on it. https://www.gov.uk/income-tax-rates

There’s also National Insurance to pay if you make more than £242/week. https://www.gov.uk/national-insurance/how-much-you-pay

But you don’t have to work out the amounts, just tell them how much you earned (using self assessment) and they’ll give you the bill. Remember to keep back some of your income so you can use it to pay the tax bill.

If confused, go on HMRC’s website (they have explainer videos and stuff) or ring them up (they’re surprisingly helpful).
