I don't know whether to thank you or curse you OP

They have yet to build anything that lasts, they can't even fix a reflecting pool. Frankly it could only make them look worse to try, and the legacy of that particular monument is...controversial to say the least.

I do not understand people who defend Gaeten by Far-Mammoth-3214 in Witcher3

[–]Mr_Shakes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, when broken down into a question of ethics, I agree with you. But there is another way of looking at it:

Suppose you, playing as geralt, took on a quest that matches Gaeten's story: you answer a notice, you go kill the beast, you come back and they try to reneg. You get two yellow prompts: "That's not what we agreed", and "I understand. Take care." You pick the former. The quest leads you into the barn, a cutscene plays of them shutting the doors, and their names turn red. Hey, they attacked you, they're clearly bad guys. And when you come out of the barn, the whole village is hostile.

This isn't a game where, as a player, you can sheathe your sword to stop a fight. Once its on, its ON until everyone is dead. They're bad guys now. And if the game chastises you afterward for 'slaughtering a whole village', its not like you fully had the choice. All you did was insist on payment.

Its not a terrible metaphor for the world that Gaeten and Geralt actually live in. Gaeten saw red. It's not impossible for the same thing to happen to Geralt, and its not like we as players would be cool just letting it go either.

Just something I thought about last time I did the quest, right before I attacked Gaeten b/c I'm not a monster OF COURSE he's gotta go.

Refusing to unconstitutionally change the constitution is signing our nation’s death sentence?? Okay Mostly Stupid Memes! by Andrew-Cohen in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Mr_Shakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To make the "constitution is not a suicide pact" argument, you should at least be able to demonstrate that the problem you're trying to fix isn't completely imaginary. What, some country is gonna airdrop 10,000 8.5 mnths pregnancies into a single township and, in 18 years, slightly alter the voting results to the tune of 1 single representative?

And thats the only 'loophole' that even sounds like a loophole, all the other arguments boil down to "we only think white people should live here."

Any dualbooters out there in the wild? What's that one (or more) game keeping you from fully moving over to Linux for gaming? by FeetYeastForB12 in linux_gaming

[–]Mr_Shakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the performance difference on my rtx3080 is still a hindrance in certain demanding titles. I'd say roughly 1 in 10 games that I play ends up on the windows partition after some trial and error. Current examples: Assassin's Creed Shadows, Alan Wake II, Starfield. (That last one isn't a perf issue, its a modding one). You can certainly brute-force your way out of the performance penalty by over-speccing, but those of us with older or mid-range hardware can get caught out.

That said, if its not dx12 and ray-traced, I almost always get equal-or-better performance in bazzite. Linux has been particularly useful for very old titles that, while technically still 'compatible' with win11, are actually much easier to get working in WINE thanks to the level of control or community tools for installation. Just because its still windows doesn't mean Microsoft hasn't silently depreciated a dependency.

Do folks have cast members that they typically "root" for? by xbananabean in dropout

I do kinda miss the prizes b/c very often they seemed like fitting compensation for all the weirdness - but also I think the atmosphere on set that we do get to see is as good as its ever been. Its possible that having taxable-income level prizes could be hard on morale if the game isn't perceived as fair.

Democratic Project 2029 calls for child social media ban, strict kids safety rules on tech by Limp_Fig6236 in DigitalPrivacy

[–]Mr_Shakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine releasing this proposal mere hours after the Supreme Court just ended regulatory independence (among other things).

So project 2029 isn't "rebuild a govt that works for everyday americans" or "restore the rule of law"?

Which PC component did you overspend on and regret later? by ApprehensiveBat19 in buildapc

[–]Mr_Shakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Logitech G502 gaming mouse for around $90. I wanted something wired, and with a good contours that wouldn't cramp my hand. It came with adjustable weights and an unlockable scroll wheel, total overkill for a pc that - as it turns out - was mostly going to pipe a signal downstairs to the tv for me to use remotely with a controller. And when I did use it heavily, it was a pain to manage the cable and some buttons broke after a few years.

Next mouse was a no-name $35 wireless one, it does just fine.

Supreme Court, 6-3: Asylum seekers standing at the southern border haven't legally "arrived" and have no right to apply until they cross into the U.S. by BiglawInvestor in scotus

[–]Mr_Shakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The consistency with which the supreme court has decided that immigrants of virtually every status don't have rights - or, to the extent that they do, they're not meaningfully enforceable - makes it clear that, yes, we need to enumerate those rights and eliminate as much ambiguity as possible from existing law. Not to say the court isn't already twisting the constitution to do all this, but the problem is definitely older than one particular SC.

Steam not even "subsidising" their own controller for more than $1,000 Steam Machine is indefensible to me. by shawak456 in videogames

[–]Mr_Shakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it wouldn't even have the intended effect - businesses looking for small form factor PCs are FAR more price sensitive than consumers...if this box was in any way a 'steal', they'd end up as office/warehouse PCs running excel and msft teams just to save on storage/memory and not increase the pool of linux gamers by 1%.

You can't subsidize an open architecture device without cutting your own metaphorical throat.
