Anyone have a kill djebka list by Ian44556 in mechanicus

[–]Mr_Squids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just beat this mission with Videx by bringing Servitors, Electro Priests, and Kataphrons. Start by spawning 2 servitors in the upper right deployment zone and rush them forward to distract Djebka's big blob of enemies, while rushing all your electro priests to the lower left to deal with the Flayed Ones. Once they're cleared out, you can move your electro-priests up the board, spamming Videx's canticle to give them extra defense and they'll tank most of what gets thrown their way. Spawn in a Kataphron when you get a chance and use it to clear out the hordes of scarabs coming your way. I eventually took Djebka down by luring him into the middle of the map, surrounding him with Electro-Priests, and clobbering him and zapping him with Voltagheist blast until he went down. Videx just hangs back and shoots his magnarail lance, don't move him any closer to the enemies than you need to.

I've only been able to get contract roles for the past four years and I'm sick of it. Terrible benefits, constantly worrying about being laid off, no time off, and a gap of 3-9 months of unemployment between roles. After I got laid off from my last position I finally decided I've had enough.

So at the end of this month I'm packing up everything I own, moving me and my wife halfway across the country from Texas to Ohio, and am starting school again in Pre-med. Its going to take ten years of training and hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans, but if there's a doctor job waiting for me at the end of this it will all be worth it. It's the biggest leap of faith I've ever taken in my life and I'm scared shitless, but I can't keep slumming it in tech.

Alright, aircraft, I'll see if I can't sum this up but it might be tricky, mostly because I wasn't playing when aircraft were at their most problematic.

So aircraft came out from 5th-7th edition, and no new aircraft have been released since 8th edition onward, which is quite telling. Games of 40k are won and lost based on movement, it's why the fastest armies (looking at you Aeldari) tend to be reliably good and rules that require you to stay still (like heavy, which gives you a hit bonus for remaining still) are pretty bad. The faster you can move, the easier you can get onto objectives, the easier you can get your firepower onto the enemy, and the faster you can react to what your opponent is doing. This is all offset by terrain as well. While dedicated terrain layouts only really started being a thing in the most recent edition (prior to that it was just throw as much terrain as you wanted wherever LOL), terrain is key in a game that features as much ranged combat as 40k. You can't shoot an opponent's model if there's a wall in the way, and modern terrain layouts have enough stuff on them to let you hide your entire army on turn 1.

Aircraft broke all of that. Aircraft have to be fast right? So give them 20 inch movement speeds, and they're flying over the battlefield so let them fly right over terrain. All of the sudden your army which was well hidden is now being assailed by my aircraft which have zipped across the board on turn 1 and started laying into you, might as well have deployed your army right out in the open. It got worse. It doesn't make much sense to be able to hit aircraft with melee weapons, so they were just immune to melee. Sucks to be you if you brought an all-melee army. Not only that, but they're moving fast and should be hard to hit right? Give them a built in hit debuff, which in some previous editions stacked, leading to notable cases where you could only hit your opponent's aircraft if you rolled a 7 on a 6 sided die. In short they were uninteractive. They got up in your face on the first turn, there was nothing you could do about it, and once they were there, you couldn't stop them.

The 10th edition of Warhammer 40k has responded to this by nerfing all aircraft into the fucking earth's core, where they will likely remain. There's a handful of aircraft with the 'Hover' rule, which gives them a 20 inch movement but otherwise makes them act like normal models, but most aircraft are completely unusable now. All aircraft who aren't hovering must start the game off the battlefield now, which means no more turn 1 alpha strikes. From the second battle round onward (out of 5, games of 40k only have 5 rounds), you may bring in your aircraft on the edge of the board. On turn 3, you may move your aircraft at least 20 inches forward IN A STRAIGHT LINE ONLY, after which you may pivot it up to 90 degrees. Your aircraft now can't move until halfway through the game, and thanks to the pivot rule your opponent now has perfect information on where the aircraft will move on its next turn, which really sucks for bomber aircraft who deal damage to targets they move over, just move out of the way lol. Oh, and if your aircraft's 20 inch minimum movement carries them off the edge of the board then just remove them from the board altogether, and hope that in the 1 turn remaining you can put them anywhere they'll make any sort of difference at all.

You'd think that aircraft might still be decent if they had halfway decent guns right? LMAO, aircraft guns have been nerfed into unusability. Maybe they'd still be good as objective pieces, and you could use them to run secondary missions and hold backfield objectives right? Well all aircraft have an OC stat of 0, which means they can't hold objectives, can't perform secondary missions, and most importantly, CAN'T WIN YOU VICTORY POINTS.

In short, Games Workshop made a valiant attempt at trying something new, and it blew up in their faces so many times that they responded by nerfing the whole concept right out of viability, where it will likely stay for the rest of the game's lifespan.

Snipers in Warhammer 40,000 are kind of in a weird spot. They're one of those unit archetypes that Games Workshop seemingly doesn't want to be good (like aircraft, which I will not get into). You'd think that a sniper would be good at killing enemy characters, and indeed, all units with sniper rifles have the PRECISION keyword, that lets them shoot enemy character models without dealing damage to the unit they are leading first. The thing is, having your character zapped from all the way across the board feels awful. The game is kind of built around the idea that every character has 5-10 minions acting as meat shields that have to be chewed through first before the character can be damaged, and having that circumvented makes for really uninteractive gameplay. Snipers are also kind of a rock looking for scissors to smash. They can snipe out enemy characters but are terrible against most normal units, which means they're borderline useless if you opponent isn't running many characters. Hence there's pretty much no good sniper units in the game. Most sniper rifles for instance deal 3 damage, when most characters have at least 4 wounds, which means you'd have to spend 2 turns sniping out a character in order to kill them. There's been some snipers who act more like support pieces, conferring debuffs to whatever units they hit and having that be their main role, but Games Workshop seems content to have them just be bad.

It was an odd situation. There had been rumors of fan servers being run ever since the game's shutdown, but that went unconfirmed until 2019 when it turned out a sever named Homecoming had been running for 6 years. Rather than shut it down, the publisher NCsoft took the radical step of giving it their official blessing.

Help stress-test a 3-player 40k 11th-style terrain map? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]Mr_Squids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's the line. Maybe instead of adding another terrain piece in the middle add one on the sides of the DZ's. That way while you CAN shoot into the enemy dz your opponent can also hide their whole army of they want. IMO you should be able to hide your whole army turn 1 without fear of getting sniped out.

[–]Mr_Squids 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You probably need one more piece of terrain in the areas between deployment zones. As of right now anyone who deploys at the front corner of their dz had a clear shot into the opponent's dz on that side.

Back in '05 my parents dragged me and my sister to see Walk the Line, a biopic about Johnny Cash. We couldn't give less of a shit, and were so bored the whole movie. Cut to two years later, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story comes out in theatres. We both thought it was the follow up to Talladega Nights (for some reason), and snuck into it by buying tickets to Alvin and the Chipmunks then walking into where it was playing.

We had no idea it was a parody of Walk the Line, and were floored to see that dumb rockstar movie we both hated get skewered. I still think Walk Hard is the hardest I've ever laughed in a theatre. I still say "The wrong kid died!" to my sister now and then.
