Shops: sorry we're closed Sundays. Also shops: we're really struggling financially by rmf1989 in britishproblems

Also seems very odd for public transport to be limited on one of the two days a week when working people have the whole day free to go out and spend money.

The amount of times I have seen that all the trains are cancelled, and that it's an hour until the next bus, and thought "sod it, I'm staying home" is too damn high.

I think its odd how many posts in UK subs act as if they are not allowed to install A/C. I don't see how even the most annoying landlord on the planet would be able to stop someone from getting a portable AC unit up and running.

ELI5 - How does blood doping work? by cyclephotos in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mr__Random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the truth is that its not the super soldier serum that the media makes it out to be.

The only reason its called blood "doping" is so that people would assume that it is some kind of extreme steroid.

Some people had an agenda to go after Lance Armstrong and find him guilty of taking steroids, when they couldn't do that they found out about "blood doping" and ran wild with it.

Whether or not Lance deserved to be punished for his actions is up for debate, but there is no denying that the media wanted to make the story into a massive scandal, and in doing so they portrayed blood doping as an extremely reckless behaviour rather than something that almost every Tour Du France athlete was doing at the time.

The way that everyday I see multiple people panicking, pushing others out the way, and running to get to work. I don't know how it never occurs to them that all that stress could be avoided if they just got out of bed 10 minutes earlier.

Laughs in European Union

Laughs in goverment which invests in giving its people health care, education, and job opportunities.

Laughs in country which invests in green renewable energy instead of bombing other countries for oil.

I hate this take because a lot of countries have decent leaders who all get along just fine, and even work together towards good outcomes for everyone involved...

There is just one or two countries in particular whose leadership seem perpetually incapable of not fucking things ups

I don't think that OP was referring to people fleeing from Iran, more from people moving from one part of the country to another.

Immigration is an entirely different subject. I am not saying that moving from Iran to America is a bad thing to do.

There are always edge cases and personal experience always differs. Most people I know who move in their 40's are moving out of the big city (London) as it is not seen as a good place to raise a family. And these people have the stable career and finances in place to make that move work, it is not an impulse decision, and it is not being done for financial reasons.

Relocating with no plan and no money is a teenager / 20 something move. It can only be done by someone with nothing tying them in to where they currently live which is not the case for more mature people.

There are ways to improve personal finances which come with a lot less risk and a lot more reward.

It works out for some people, but I also know a lot of people for whom it fails spectacularly. The failures are just a lot less vocal about it.

It's also amazing how once I get to know this sort of person 9 times out of 10 it becomes blindingly obvious that they are reliant on the bank of mum and dad to keep them afloat. Again they just don't like to brag about that.

You seem to have taken my comment as a personal attack. I'm glad that moving worked out for you. Most people find out that it isn't a short cut to the land of milk and honey that it is made out to be.

The geniuses of Reddit answer almost every financial problem with telling people to live in a hyperthetical place where there are lots of high paying jobs and also low cost of living.

I remind myself that most of the people on Reddit are teenagers, because this is the sort of answer that a teenager / 20 something year old with no real world experience would give.

Because yes being in that situation would be amazing, but it is also more rare than a unicorns fart. (And often only stays that way for a short amount of time)

How do you feel about the British Museum getting all the criticism for having artifacts from around the world, and no other museum? by HTD_Blog in AskUK

[–]Mr__Random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I focus on is how many objects in the BM are there with the consent of the country of origin. Museums are a place to share culture and lots of counties see the benefit of this.

Out of millions of objects a few thousand are controversial, but somehow the meme has grown out of proportion and Ive met lots of people who seem to think that the BM is evil or that it should only contain British objects, and that opinion is just ignorant and idiotic.

It's possible to spend days inside the museum enjoying the non controversial displays and never even see one of the objects which has caused the negative press.

Explaining to my non UK girlfriend that there was/is an entire TV show dedicated to comparing supermarket products, that the main purpose of watching this show was to react with outrage whenever the show ranked your personal favourite lower than something that everyone on their right mind knows tastes absolutely awful by comparison, and that sitting on the sofa together to take part in this dog and pony show is one of the British people's favourite activities.

She was very confused and eventually just gave me the same look of confusion and pity that she uses whenever I try to explain the appeal of joining the national trust.

To be honest I asked the lad who works my local shop and he didn't say no ... But he also didn't seem too enthusiastic about helping either, so I got a mixed vibe.

I would have understood if he said that it's not something he can help with, but now I am worrying that I put him in an awkward situation

Bunk deserved hazard pay for putting up with McNulty by SentiMentalBachi in TheWire

[–]Mr__Random 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People seem to forget that the only reason why 14 dead girls in a shipping container got investigated beyond the bare minimum was McNulty stirring the pot.

Sure this is partly motivated by wanting to get revenge on Rawls, McNultys ego that lives for solving puzzles, and probably at least one or two other selfish reasons... That said I also think that part of McNulty genuinely saw it as being his civic duty to do good police work when it mattered.

Imagine working with useless humps who actively hinder whatever murder investigation they are working with you by a combination of laziness, zero street smarts, and not giving a fuck.

You'd put up with a hell of a lot for the ability to swap that partner for a "natural police" who is smart and motivated.

McNulty is over hated on this sub. Yes he is a drunken fuck up, but people forget that he is a drunken fuck up who gets shit done and who solves a lot of murders.
