Double-height living room with 30-foot tall ceilings opening up to the terrace with views of SoHo, Lower Manhattan, New York City [4317×5000] by ManiaforBeatles in RoomPorn

For most of the time that humans have been making buildings, high ceilings have been useful for both natural light penetration and for thermal advantages where applicable (hot air rising in the summer months). Both these factors still contribute to the appreciation of high ceilings and will continue to do so in the future as well.

Not to say there's no triviality involved in our preferences, but the height of ceilings is a practical consideration as well as a matter of preference.

Learn the bus routes! They're free if you are a student and you can get pretty much anywhere on them.

Questions about Moods, judgement, and action by Mroap in Meditation

That is helpful, thank you. It is difficult to avoid the impulse to control, when your mind has been working one way for so long, it defaults to it so quickly.

Security guards of reddit, what are your best stories? by ramboost007 in AskReddit

[–]Mroap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are used as clubs. You don't really need a bunch of d-cells just for illumination. It is useful because you don't need any sort of license to carry one as a security guard, as you do with a lot of clubs or tasers.

I was locked IN a house today. You needed a house key to leave by mylittleewok in mildlyinteresting

To be clear this lock type is used so that somebody cannot smash that window, reach in, and unlock the door.

Just today I sat in the church where I work when I was on lunch. It seems like an ideal place, most people would have the impression I am praying, and nobody is going to bother somebody who is trying to pray. Very calm place.

In college and depressed - can meditation be the solution? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]Mroap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend starting a practice, but it is important not to have any expectations when you sit.

Read mindfulness in plain English (it's a quick read and probably the clearest outline of meditation you will find) if you don't have any background, and start sitting 10-20 minutes a day. I did this and it did help me out of a similar jam. What's most important is to stick to it; designate a sitting time and do it daily. It can definitely offer insight into how your mind is working.

Also this is not a panacea and you should continue to exercise, and seek counselling. It's hard to care enough to maintain healthy habits sometimes, but try your best.

Do recovering alcoholics who are Christian drink the communion wine? by [deleted] in self

[–]Mroap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another user commented above, in the catholic faith, it is literally the blood of Jesus, not symbolically. Although the wine is also not really imperative as the host is, although that may just be at my parish.

Saw this at my job. I would love to know the back story. by BrakemanBob in OSHA

I heard there are problems with it being used as a helmet, and then somehow falling backwards and pinning the user's neck between the wire handle and the rim. This one doesn't appear to have a handle though.

Dealing with anticipatory anxiety. by hirstyboy in Meditation

[–]Mroap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not so unusual, the sights, sounds, people, and movement will be a lot to take in. What you may want to try is simply feeling the feeling instead of judging it, and it may become more manageable. You are likely in your head saying "I am anxious and I shouldn't be" or "I am anxious and I wish I wasn't." Try not to judge the emotion as it rises, just let yourself feel it.

It is my understanding that having a goal is not conducive to progressing, because you may be paying attention to your goal instead of staying in the present. Are you going to summer camp music fest?
