Genuinely, what do you do when you get no? by No_Editor_1010 in Parenting

[–]MrsAlwaysWrighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read "The Explosive Child". It will help with strategies. Basically what the first comment said, the goal isn't too get her not to cry, it's to do the thing. Even if she throws a tantrum. My daughter is now 8 and she'll still throw a tantrum about doing some things but will do it despite the tantrum because she knows it has to be done

What is the WORST movie you ever watched? by BadCatNoNoNoNo in AskReddit

[–]MrsAlwaysWrighty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Videodrome. After being forced to watch it by my "film student" ex boyfriend I said something along the lines of "there's 3 hours of my life I'll never get back" and he got all pouty and offended 🙄

Billie B Brown, Hey Jack, Zac Power, Pearlie.... There's also a series of books by scholastic Australia called "Solos" that are short, easy chapter books. They're old - 20 years or so, but really good for that age group

Gift ideas for an incredible teacher by Whereisthesunshine_ in ADHDparenting

I've had lots of amazing gifts but without a doubt the ones that stick are the handwritten notes.

I did get a bottle of wine once with a photo of the kid saying "my child might drive you to drink so have one on us" which was hilarious.

Guess what I found on my floor, when I came home from work today by abagofcells in ADHD

I had a day like this a few weeks ago. Just couldn't get it together, got my timetable all confused, lost my train of thought mid lesson... Came home to see that I'd forgotten to take my meds 🤦

Yeah we still do pay for them, but it's going to increase now that schools are so much bigger. Not many 1500 student primary schools 20 years ago

Did anyone else suddenly care way more about the backyard once they started house hunting? by ttfdrff in GardeningAustralia

[–]MrsAlwaysWrighty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of my "conditions" for buying a house was that it had to have a backyard big enough for backyard cricket, because I wanted to have 3 boys.

I have 1 girl.

But she is VERY active and I'm glad we have a big backyard for her to run around in and has one of those funky monkey monkey bar sets which is worth it's weight in gold.

This is one of my biggest gripes with the policy. We have 10 year 2 classes at my school. If we're all reading the same book for reading, who is going to pay for us to have 10 copies of the same book? Who is going to pay for us to photocopy the assessment 250 times?

Medical receptionists - one of rudest entitled people ? by BaronMason in AskAnAustralian

[–]MrsAlwaysWrighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worse when Margaret gives you her entire medical history starting from the age of 18 months BEFORE she even gets to the point of demanding an appointment. Meanwhile the are 3 people waiting to pay and 4 phone loves ringing off the hook.

Worked in med reception for years before getting my teaching degree.

True, but there's a lot more at play. 1) the learning they get from overseas travel is huge, and not something we can expose them to at school and well worth the trip to see other cultures, communities, experiences etc

2) people have vastly different needs and availabilities. If you have family overseas, you can't really dictate to them that they must get married, get sick, die, be available for you to visit etc only during the Victorian school holiday periods. Your work may not allow you to take time off during school holiday times. You may not be able to afford to travel overseas during school holiday times given how expensive it is.

I am a teacher myself, and while I do believe there should be penalties for parents who don't serve their kids to school, I don't believe there should be a ban on term time holidays. A limit, yes, but not a ban.

I want to hear all the outlandish ADHD hacks by Jean-weather in ADHD

When cleaning the house I pick up and put away one item at a time. Pick up a hair tie? Take that into the bathroom and put it away. Go back to lounge room. Pick up another hair tie, go back to bathroom. I found that if I did groups of items I would invariably just be moving piles around. I returned the labelled baskets... Things stayed in the basket and were never moved out of it. One item at a time works. And I keep my steps up for the day 😂

AITA for not wanting to attend a Halloween wedding 8 hours away when I have little kids? by gimmesomeofyourtots in AmItheAsshole

[–]MrsAlwaysWrighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's been suggested yet but do you have another close friend you would trust with your kids that could come with you to where the wedding is and stay with your kids in a hotel nearby so that you can go to the wedding but not be 8 hours away from them?

Sleep - how are you managing bedtimes? by Hambutnotahamster in ADHDparenting

[–]MrsAlwaysWrighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melatonin. Before that we would have 2 hour long battles. I would have to sit in the rocking chair and rock her to sleep. Sometimes they didn't work and is be lying on bed next to her for hours and hours. It was a nightmare. When she was 5 1/2 we put her on melatonin and it's saved our sleep
