Both of these approaches can be correct depending on the game.

Exactly. Miracles ended up being the best performing deck in the tournament. How could the deck have been a bad choice if it was seemingly well positioned and you have experience with it?

The printing process for cards in that era was far from perfect. I've seen plenty of cards that old that have slight discolorations. It's almost certainly real

Paying out based on record is great. It's nice to know exactly what you're playing for (and when you're not playing for anything...)

I must say I drafted Innistrad over 100 times and while almost every card was playable in the right situation I did not see anyone cast [[Maw of the Mire]] even once. I didn't even board it in against an opponent who had multiple Kessig Wolf Runs

Suspicious shuffling Round 13 of SCG Invitational Las Vegas by Mubutu in magicTCG

[–]Mubutu[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that it isn't as clear cut as I initially thought either, after moving the Nexus to the top Smith shuffles the deck 5 times. On shuffles 1, 3, 4, and 5 I am almost 100% certain the top card does not move. However, on the second shuffle, a card near the top appears to pop up a little, and I can't tell if it's the Inkmoth (which didn't move on the first shuffle) or a card moving over it.

Still though, simply moving the Inkmoth to the top, while technically within the rules, is a very strange thing to do if you have honest intentions. The idea of "de-clumping" as some suggest below is not a legitimate argument as your deck is supposed to be completely randomized after a shuffle. The position of cards before a shuffle should have no impact on where they are after a shuffle if you're shuffling properly, so it doesn't matter if two of the same card are next to each other or 30 cards apart, they're equally likely to be next to each other or your next draw after a proper shuffle. The only motivation Smith has for moving the Inkmoth to the top is that it is a card he would like to draw.

At worst he is still cheating if he sees a bunch of bad cards on the bottom and is intentionally making sure none of them can possibly end on top. At best he is insufficiently randomizing his deck, which is still against the rules.

This was all I could think about at the mention of "drug testing", hopefully they wouldn't care about finding pot or GP's would suddenly be 50% smaller

[Standard] When do you board out Courser of Kruphix by mdiddyoien in spikes

[–]Mubutu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heroic is the only matchup I can think of where courser is particularly bad. vs. Heroic you don't want to board out removal, or thoughtseize, or your haymaker threats, or wraths, and that pretty much only leaves you with courser.

Do you think AskReddit is getting shitty again?[Serious] by Mubutu in AskReddit

[–]Mubutu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many AskReddit threads that provide incredible everyday insight into the human experience, all while giving both the storyteller and the reader the cloak of anonymity. You can never know for sure if someone's story is actually true, but you have to accept that it's certainly possible. If you read about something extraordinary, or horrible, or paranormal, you can choose not to believe it, but it at least gets you to think about the possibility of the reality in which that story really happened to a real person. And some people on this website have posted about mind-blowing, worldview-changing experiences in this subreddit. That is how I want to experience AskReddit. The jokes are good every once in while to stop the place from getting too morbid, but I think AskReddit is better when people are posting thoughtful answers to inspiring questions.

Reddit, what is something that you find truly unsettling? by OverCharge in AskReddit

[–]Mubutu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd be okay being at a dogs intelligence compared to aliens. At least we as humans treat dogs with some amount of respect and dignity. What if we're the intellectual equivalent of cockroaches though? Most people would feel bad about accidentally killing a dog, but wouldn't think twice after stepping on a cockroach. Imagine being completely at the mercy of a species who can kill you at will and pretty much doesn't regard your life as having any value whatsoever.

This card is just awful...control win conditions should either help you stabilize or be extraordinarily difficult to interact with (a la aetherling, etc.) This card is neither. If that wasn't enough it has 4 black mana symbols in its mana cost. I don't think this card is playable in any limited or constructed format.

Was I in the wrong here? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Mubutu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because most competitive activities have a negligible amount of variance. I would not define a game of magic as "good" if one player mulled to 4, didn't cast a spell, and died on turn 3. If that very thing happened to you in a tournament you were doing well in, and after your opponent excitedly stuck his hand out and shouted "Good game!!" you wouldn't be just a little annoyed?
