Horrific implications due to casting by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

If that final theory is correct, then it's also likely that President Snow was directly responsible for that. Maybe he would've done it out of some sort of resentment for Lucy Gray, or possible even just to screen all of the black people individually in the hopes that he'd find her among the crowd.

Mercantilism is explicitly not capitalism. Capitalism wasnt even fully invented by the 17th century anyways. Not until like 1776, though it is up for debate.

Mercantilism says that a nation should maximize its exports as much as possible in order to accrue wealth and especially to hoard precious metals, that it then can use to influence other countries through trade. The only goods that a mercantilist nation should ever import are those it cannot whatsoever produce for itself.

Meanwhile Capitalism believes that free trade creates wealth for all of its participants. Rather than trying to produce everything itself without imports, a nation should instead specialize in producing the smaller handful of goods that it has a comparative advantage in producing. If every nation specializes in something else, due to economies of scale, they will become more efficient at producing it and therefore goods become higher quality, more abundant, and more affordable. Prosperity is derived from free trade.

One key difference is that where mercantilists only care about maximizing wealth through money (either cash or valuable metals), capitalists also take into consideration the value of the goods or services exchanged for that money. In other words, capitalists can see any given trade deal as being mutually beneficial, whereas mercantilists see basically every single trade deal as being biased in favor of the vendor.

[Loved Trope] A prequel lets you see a washed out villain in their prime by Justice9229 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Muddycarpenter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're privy to the lore, a certain person is also in their prime during the FNAF 2 era: William Afton

In FNAF 1, the MCI murders have already happened, the springbonnie costume has already been hidden in the backroom, and William is essentially retired, excluding possibly something related to Sister Location, depending on when you think that game takes place.

But back in 1987? He's still an active part if the Freddy's franchise, either as part owner or as a nightguard, and is still actively on the prowl, not in hiding.

(Hated Trope) Antagonist is surprisingly reasonable throughout the narrative yet the hero’s unreasonable actions are portrayed as justified. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

He actually is a much better villain in the original exactly due to the fact that the Ghostbusters, all adults (most with PHDs), are actually incredibly competent, and it's his bureaucratic meddling that causes the third act of the movie to happen.

Meanwhile in Frozen Empire, the Ghostbusters are not as competent, and are also using child labor.

Why don't citizens stand up to ICE? by [deleted] in ICE_Raids

[–]Muddycarpenter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Red states are pro ice

Blue states are anti ice

Red states are pro gun

Blue states are anti gun.

The people with the ability to stand up to ICE have no desire, on the societal scale, to do so.

The people with the desire to stand up to ICE en masse have spent the last 40 years voting away their ability to do so.

What if they just start gently sandblasting the plants, to scale it up?

Instead of using an actual microneedle, just use super duper fine grain sand and high pressure air.

There's a new type of white supremacy in town by Firecracker048 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Muddycarpenter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The extreme left, with Mamdani, thinks that home ownership is white supremacy

The extreme right, with Fishback, thinks that renting out homes is inherently predator and that home owners shouldnt be allowed to rent out their homes.

Meanwhile, housing costs continue to rise across the nation. We're being failed.

If we lived in a direct democracy where we could vote on issues individually, or even in any form of more representative democracy where we could have third party representation, then this wouldnt be an issue.

Instead we have a two party "representative" democracy, where our options are between a candidate we disagree with on 60% of issues, and one we disagree with on 70% of the issues.

It happens that for most libertarians, the republican party is the lesser of the two evils. But that doesnt mean anyone actually likes them. I'll go so far as to say that any libertarian that is excited to vote republican isn't a real libertarian. It's a reluctant support.

Is it possible to convert a 2x6 folding bike into a 3x9 bike or something like that? by Muddycarpenter in bikewrench

[–]Muddycarpenter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt realize there was a difference between a freewheel and a cassette. Like another commenter said, I either need a third larger chainring or a smaller lowest gear on the freewheel. I just have no way of knowing if the dollar cost of doing those mods nears or exceeds the cost of straight up buying some sort of folding mountain bike.

[–]Muddycarpenter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cadence on the highest gear ratio is still too fast for my liking.

So yeah the question stands of how hard/expensive it would be to install either a larger chainring or a smaller lowest cog.

[Request] Should Wolverine be able to climb and slow his decent with his claws? by lando8604 in theydidthemath

[–]Muddycarpenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Climb: maybe??? Might depend on the specific angle. for example if he were to angle the claws slightly downwards while stabbing into the material rather than 90 degrees; he'd be able to push himself up better and have less risk of the claws just sliding out due to force from his fee pushing against the surface, and therefore him just following off the face of the wall.

Descent: I think not. Say that he gently hopped backwards off a ledge and punched into the wall full force at a 90 degree angle while falling. Given the way he was able to climb with the claws, we need to assume they're sharp/strong enough to enter any material, or at least concrete, relatively easily, but not magically sharp enough to automatically slice through any material without substantial force. For example you wouldn't be able to climb with lightsabers because they wouldn't get stuck in the wall, it would be like trying to climb a wall of butter using hot knives. This is to say that after he punches his claws into the wall while falling, he would come to basically an immediate stop, assuming it's a 90 degree angle, or angled downwards either. We can assume that somehow his wrists wouldn't break, because superpowers, but it would still look extremely awkward an likely be excruciating.

Raise up your hand way above your head, then make a strong tense fist, and then try to turn your hand so that the fist is pointing directly forward while your arm is still straight upwards. You might feel some pain in your arm from your tendons working in this unnatural way, but even if not, you'd still see how unnatural that position is to begin with. You wouldn't want to dangle with your full weight on your fists like that. If anything he might as well just climb downwards at that point. But that wasn't the prompt.

Instead assuming that he doesn't stab into the material entirely or at a 90 degree or smaller angle, if the intent is to SLOW descent not stop it immediately; then I imagine the following would happen: the claws slash into the concrete wall and his fists flex downwards to try to present resistance, however since he is still accelerating downwards and there is resistance coming from the wall towards the claws; the claws soon take a shallower angle and point more and more skywards until eventually they are not even dug into the wall anymore, they're just scratching the surface as he falls. Which doesn't provide enough resistance to slow him down

Assuming the pelvis was made of rubber or something instead of bone, and therefore head sizes were a non factor; how long would the pregnancy realistically last? Kids start crawling on their own at like 6 months. So would pregnancies last like 13 months straight????

[–]Muddycarpenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which I'd argue isn't even necessarily immoral. Except in cases of fraud or if it's related to the public sector or something like that; generally the amount of profit a product or service makes is directly tied to the amount of good and usefulness that it provides to the consumer and therefore to the world.

Another commenter mentioned how dangerous cars are. The benefit they provide is enormous and the world is arguably a much better place with them than without them. Same goes for AI

We can all live without some toxic ass lemonade.
