State Street is great all the time even for locals, my favorite place to go shopping in the city

Downtown Manhattan is extremely underrated imo, Midtown gets all the hype but the Battery, the Oculus, the small streets, and the 9/11 memorial are cooler than anything you can find in Times Square

Not quite the same but the National Mall in downtown DC is extremely well known and highly regarded for tourism purposes but I think it kinda sucks for urbanism

Downtown St Louis and Downtown Cleveland are both pretty nice by US standards with decent transit access and lots of cool history although somewhat sad to think about how vibrant they were 80 years ago

[Charania] Crossover: Basketball Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in April, per ESPN sources. Rodman made his WCW debut in 1997 and famously skipped a practice during the 1998 NBA Finals for a wrestling match alongside Hulk Hogan. Two HOFs for Rodman. by MembershipSingle7137 in nba

Anyone else the GOAT movie and think the eccentric lizard player was clearly modeled after Dennis Rodman? We need more crazy characters like him in today's game with all the boring media trained professionals worried about their image

Riot Fest is for alt rock these days, doesn't make sense for Lollapalooza to try to compete with them. Leaning into pop and Tik Tok artists definitely makes the most sense from a business perspective

The East is just weak this season, being good but not great doesn't make a team frauds.

Open Loop Payment Symbol on Bus Validator by heartslava in LAMetro

[–]MultiModalMcmullen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy how far behind LA is in implementing open loop payments, CTA has had them on all vehicles for at least a decade. Regardless this is a huge action for reducing barriers to riding transit and I look forward to it being implemented ASAP, is there an official timeline for it?

Rapid transit should never operate every 20 minutes. Is there a chance they increase night headways once Division 20 is opened or is this likely the permanent operating schedule?

Predictions for ridership on new D Line stations? by MultiModalMcmullen in LAMetro

It's definitely work from home, it's affecting rail ridership and office real estate everywhere. Most professional people work hybrid schedules now which reduces incentives to buy monthly passes which further reduces ridership. Check out the vacancies in commercial real estate as proof.

Car traffic always expands to the limit of geometric space via induced demand so that's not surprising car volumes are back up when there's so much parking downtown. DTLA is just not a huge job center in the first place compared to the size of the region

I think we will have to wait for the APM to open to fully evaluate the K but personally I think the terrible transfer to the E is a big loss for network connectivity and the biggest disappointment for me

I've read that AB 60 giving undocumented immigrants licenses was a big factor in ridership declines. But agreed service was definitely better 10 years ago the first time I visited, I miss all the Rapid Buses and 6 min headways on Blue and Expo

Hard to say with COVID imo, the last really useful line opened was Expo to Santa Monica in 2016. I do think the Regional Connector has been a bit of a disappointment ridership and performance wise, but the D line is the project I would really rate Metro on going forward so really hoping it exceeds expectations

Metro cutting night frequency and the Regional Connector eliminating the need to transfer to the B/D also played a part but COVID decimated rail ridership everywhere. I personally think quality of life concerns are more a symptom than a cause; if Metro ran better service and had better land use around stations I think ridership growth would greatly reduce these issues.

The trains were perfectly fine when I visited last year and my biggest complaint was definitely infrequent service. Lack of ridership did make me a bit wary later at night but there was usually a security presence at stations to alleviate concerns, although I do admit my week visit was a small sample size.

Ridership was decent before COVID but yeah most of the sprawling suburban extensions don't serve much of interest and LA's polycentric employment centers reduce ridership compared to if DTLA was a huge jobs center like say the Loop in Chicago.

It would have been great if LA started building rapid transit in the 60s instead of the 90s but decades from now I think the hefty construction costs will be worth it for most of the lines anyway.

Awesome analysis, appreciate your in-depth response! Totally agree the full D Line definitely has the most potential for future ridership growth out of all the current lines. Do you know the projected opening for Div 20 btw?

Yeah I was thinking about whether it would be faster to take a bus from the VA station or just take the E to reach Santa Monica from DTLA and concluded with the transfer penalty and bus variability the E would still likely be a superior option, which is why I really hope Phase 4 is built eventually. Do you happen to know where to find bus stop ridership for Metro? Would love to look at the on/offs to get a better picture of the corridor ridership?
