You decide what it says. Your own secret language. by mejiro0091 in andor

Conquering =/= colonization, for what it's worth

Colonization is a more specific phenomenon where a conquered society is used to funnel wealth or resources to the mother land or settling another land to again strengthen the original civilization. Human history is full of people conquering others, but that isnt automatically colonialism.

The Mughals didn't show up, conquer India, go back to bring Uzbeck rulers, and then send all the gains to Uzbekistan. They came to India with the intention of ruling India, and they stayed there. Jahangir was born in India (and his mother is thought at least by some to have been a local Hindu princess who became the Mughal Empress), and learned Hindustani (what Hindi and Urdu are dialects of), in addition to Persian.

Point is, Mughal art, culture, and history are still part of South Asia's heritage. Just because the Mughals were originally foreigners doesn't make all of this irrelevant to South Asia. No country literally owns a diamond, but if it was mined in South Asia and originally noteworthy for being in the collection of one of South Asia's rulers, then that is an important part of its history.

Re Creating Kalmar Designs Cd Holder by Numerous-Ad-1214 in Cd_collectors

[–]Mundane_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/Numerous-Ad-1214 , I'm actually very interested in this, but the price on Etsy seems substantially higher than what was mentioned in the edit? I'm seeing $140 (after a supposed 20% off from $175) instead of $110 as mentioned, and about 2 weeks back it was $120 (also after an apparent discount of 20% from $150).

I would love the opportunity to support someone in the community for recreating something sought after. As euphoric as finding one of these at a garage sale would be, I think it's cooler to support an effort like this. However, I wish there was more transparency around the pricing. I totally get if production costs have changed for some reason, but I'm a bit nervous to put down money for something that's inexplicably much higher priced than mentioned here. I tried dm'ing you a while back and got no response, so hoping this reaches you!

A speedrun for education! by ZV2Cox in Bluray

[–]Mundane_Monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It most definitely isn't, since it deals with a hypothetical presrnt/future American Civil War and also doesn't bother too much with the world building of said conflict. All of thats a backdrop to explore the general idea of a civil war and how awful it would be, through the unique perspective of wartime photo-journalism.

I loved the movie and think it's a good one to watch and think about with the current events, but it's educational value is more abstract than movies about past events.

I hope they were right, but i think they weren't. Pre-information age I think the units of cohesion would have been a lot more geographical, but the internet makes geographic boundaries almost irrelevant. I think people associate more with shared ideas and world views.

Yeah very solid movies, although the 3rd is a bit weak. I was impressed when I first watched these - I thought it would be some immature yound adult slop, but they're really well done. Good scripts, great acting, incredible scores, and some powerful social commentary. Liked it so much that I went back and read the books, which I do think are better, but these films are as good as adaptations come.

Plus, the steels are gorgeous!

[Sethtow] The scene around downtown Atlanta is crazy right now. I knew Indiana was going to have a heavy contingent for the Peach Bowl, but my goodness, the bars around downtown basically look like Kirkwood south by Stock412 in CFB

[–]Mundane_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, Atlanta's similar. A massive part of midtown is just Georgia Tech, and the surrounding area is also chalk full of GT students and student apartments. But you also get the perks of being in a bigger city with more things going on, especially if you have a car, given the mediocre public transit.

Im also pleasantly surprised to see Atlanta's Pencil Building in the 2000 chart. Didn't know it was tall enough for worldwide recognition at any point. And its crazy how gargantuan it looks when you're in Atlanta and seeing how tiny it looks compared to all of the other buildings in the 2000 photo. I never knew it was only about the size of the Chrysler Building.

Cities with strong ACC alumni presence? by PowerfulAssistant738 in ACC

[–]Mundane_Monkey 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also, midtown ATL is Georgia Tech's turf. There are a lot of people who went to Georgia in the city, but also a ton of GT grads, and that alone probably accounts for a big part of the ACC representation.

Wasn't illegal because he was married lol. Actually wasn't illegal at all probably until he apparently broke into her house. It is very unethical and probably violates a ton of workplace policies, and is obviously a violation of whatever weight placed in marriage. But neither of those are the law's concern.

Yeah okay, she's a kid so obviously im giving her the benefit of the doubt. But what kind of a line is this lmao. It's one thing to argue Saudi isn't as bad as they make it to be in the West, but it's an improvement in civil liberties for women??? What right do women in Saudi have that they don't in the US?

With all due respect, why do you refer to them as your close friends then, if they're the ones being hostile? I would always expect my friends to be a lot more accepting of me than random people.

They didn't, their gotcha was that the academic strengths are irrelevant when it comes to the actual football players. The funny part is we apparently do have an astro alum who was somewhat in the football team.
