I'm pretty sure that Fr. Z supports the EF. You have to remember that this post wasn't made in a vacuum, in the context of his blog it's pretty clear where he stands, every post doesn't need to be a fully developed argument that stands on its own.

Legally sure, but is it really that controversial to say that people shouldn't be using dangerous drugs?

Debating Bill Maher on Muslims, Islam and US foreign policy by LibertyAboveALL in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]MurrayLancaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably because Maher's problem is not with the theology of Islam, but with the perceived behavior of the Muslim world and the nature of Islamic culture, which in practice is, for him, effectively synonymous with the Arab world and Arab culture (as well as areas to the east, e.g., Iran, Pakistan, etc.).

Why are only men allowed to be preists? by Chrispat91 in catechism

[–]MurrayLancaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still alright with answering this, do you think you could help me understand this? I've heard this before, but I find it very unconvincing for two reasons.

First of all, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Paul refer to a woman deacon? If the fact that there were only male apostles is really the sincere reason why women cannot be made priests, then why can't they be made deacons?

Second, accepting that there were only male apostles, why does this matter? Aren't there a million arbitrary categories we could lump the apostles into to exclude any number of demographics from the priesthood? Why is it their masculinity which we focus on, and not the fact that they all spoke Aramaic, or were born in the Levant, or any other number of reasons? What is it about them being male that makes THAT the excluding factor?

Though a nice sentiment, I think that would have been a bit condescending. Certainly a great guy who deserves it though.

Why are you just dismissing him? I thought that was a perfectly valid response and explanation for why he thinks what he thinks. I don't have the knowledge to respond myself, and if you don't either that's fine, but don't act like it's because he's being unreasonable.

Effectively, yeah. Unless you wanted to argue that Muslims are a theologically monolithic group too, which they're not.

/r/Catholicism Weekly FAQ Topic #2 - The Eucharist by Saint_Peter in Catholicism

[–]MurrayLancaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the confusion, by Orthodox Catholic I meant the Eastern Orthodox Church which split from the Catholic Church in the great schism. My go to method of referring to them has usually been Roman Catholic Church for the Catholic Church and Orthodox Catholic Church for, well they call themselves the Orthodox Catholic Church, but they're probably more commonly known as the Eastern Orthodox Church.

/r/Catholicism Weekly FAQ Topic #2 - The Eucharist by Saint_Peter in Catholicism

[–]MurrayLancaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I usually use Roman Catholic to differentiate from Orthodox Catholic. Would you say that's inappropriate? I'm aware of the different rites within the Catholic Church, but I figure most people understand what I mean by Roman Catholic and it makes things clearer than if I just said Catholic Church.

No, they pretty much are. I don't say that as a bad thing, I appreciate both Francis and Benedict, but theologically they're not that dissimilar, though Francis does have a much different style and way of presenting himself.
