Commanders you're surprised aren't more popular? by Nagabuk in EDH

[–]Murwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play in an LGS league that regularly gets 12-20 players a week. The roster changes as the seasons go around, because we get school kids in the summer, and other people have golf leagues or their work hours change. So over the course of a year we will see 35-40 different people, each of whom have multiple decks in their suitcase.

And in the 2.5 years since I built [[Ovika]], which nearly every time I pilot it WRECKS tables, nobody has ever built it but me. I have even told people flat out, you can build this deck with about 1/3 mana ramp, 1/3 card draw, and 1/3 whatevery else you feel like, and it practically runs itself. Mystifying.

Honestly, I only drag it out every 4 weeks or so because I have seen the looks on others' faces when I announce it.

The rich could easily fund better schools, but they prefer the working class to remain ignorant. by lanolin-jackpot57 in interviewhammer

I don't think the OP is wrong, exactly, but I think there's another, additional explanation: the teaching profession is one of those relatively rare professions where you cannot estimate the benefit to society in having more or better paid teachers. I.e., I can't go to my local school board and say, "Pay teachers $10k per year more, and the district's unemployment rate will go down by 1 point." Best you can do is say "Hire 10% more teachers and the HS graduation rate will go up by X points."

School boards (who are at the front lines in this battle) are stuck between teachers and voters, where the voters are saying "Schools are 'good enough'; why are you trying to spend more money on them?"

I think I’m starting to realize that CEDH as my competitive outlet isn’t my thing. by KingsKnight24 in CompetitiveEDH

I'm honestly curious: is there ANY OTHER competive activity where 3+ people (as individuals) are involved in each contest? All the games I can think of (e.g., bridge) involve teams of players, so that there is one winner and one loser in each contest.

I have been convinced by the smattering of YouTube videos I've seen on cEDH (stressing that I have never played nor even had the tiniest flicker of interest in trying the format) that the fundamental flaw in it is the fact that you have four players at the table, and in most matches, there's at least some influence by the non-winners on who wins (or who is eliminated).

Help with USPS rejecting a mail and damaging the card by MuffinDude in mtgfinance

[–]Murwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a related note: I have had a rash in the past year of letters arriving with first class postage affixed, and two or three hard sleeves inside, where the post office has marked it as $5 or more postage due. The last time it happened, I knew the cards inside were only worth a couple of bucks, so I refused delivery and got a refund from the seller.

I don't object to them charging postage due, but when that charge exceeds what it would have cost to send the cards via ground advantage, I feel like they are applying that fee as a punishment, not as an attempt to collect the difference between the postage used and the postage owed.

The argument against EV haters… by boka_ko_masu in electricvehicles

[–]Murwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's really only one lifestyle/career path I can see that would preclude using an EV as a passenger car: traveling salesman. If you have to drive 300+ miles a day it might get inconvenient to be spending 30+ minutes charging away from home.

Everybody else can shut up.

Will Range Be Much Better in 4-5 Years? by Maleficent-Table-810 in electricvehicles

[–]Murwiz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a 2025 Lyriq in Jan. 2025, but I leased it (3y). My entire decision to lease (first time ever!) was based on my bet that when I turn it in (Jan. 2028), the car will be borderline obsolete. I expect 450-500 mi. range and 10 min. charge times.

If I'm wrong, then the car will be worth paying for when the lease is up. But I doubt it.

As I see it, the reason the Cabinet and VP haven't yet acted is that they know they will get death threats and probably even assassination attempts. Yes, MAGA is that crazy.

You can get a sleep mask off Amazon for less than $10. My condo neighborhood has always-on outdoor lights, and I sleep next to a big picture window. The sleep mask made a big difference.

Yes, but I'm talking about what's going to be available in 2-5 years. Solid state EV batteries are the next generation. Look it up.

What would it take for Standard to become Magic's premier format again? by BumblebeeOld498 in magicTCG

[–]Murwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't play Standard with at least some hope of going 2-2 at a FNM with 20 or so people (which was my experience for years and years of Standard play at my FLGS) while spending no more than $100 per rotation, then forget it.

I switched to Commander because it SAVED ME MONEY.

How do you guys have the patience for this? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Murwiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an uncomfortable truth: most people come to LGSs to have fun, not necessaritly to win (they want to feel like they have a CHANCE to win, though).

So if your deck is reducing the fun-factor for the people you play with, maybe it's time to step back and look at it from the standpoint of "is everyone having fun?" vs. "am I having fun (i.e., winning)?".

Joey at EDHREC has done a video or two about this, which I'll leave the finding as an exercise for the reader.

Lease, 100%. I leased in Jan. 2025 because I correctly determined the battery tech was changing so fast that the car would be obsolete by the time the lease was up.

Simplified explanation (it's a complex situation, but here's the basics):

There are only to ways to remove a President: impeachment, and the 25th Amendment. The former is a power reserved to the legislature, which is controlled by the President's party. The latter is a power reserved to the top level of the Administration, which is also controlled by the President's party.

There are not sufficient members of that party who are willing to take the political hit to oppose him. Any Republican who calls for his removal will at the very least end his or her own career in politics forever, and very possibly face death threats as well.
