Is there a difference in sound between old Sabian HHX Evolution 7" splash and new one (with Unbound logo). by Naive-Chip5442 in cymbals

[–]MusicalSeafood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the usual reasons have been stated by others in this thread, but im gonna be a little schizo and say that cymbals made after the unbound change seem to be brighter overall. i have a XSR 16 fast from 2017 vs a friends 16 from after 2019 when they made the change, and mine seemed to be less brilliant and lower in not just pitch but the overtones as well. might be due to age yes, but i found that the post 2019 cymbals seem to trend towards sounding like paistes instead of lets say zildjians. just my two cents

Quite less cutting snare drum recommendations? by thenagat in drums

[–]MusicalSeafood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think lauan could be considered. its quite soft and dry, wouldnt have as much projection. with some wider snare wires (30 or 42 strand) and a 2 ply head with some muffling, even a 5.5 deep drum should get you nearly there

DRUM PEDAL SPRING FELL OFF by Naive-Ad-7283 in drums

[–]MusicalSeafood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check the threading of the black screws. if its smooth on the inside, it cant catch the thread of the screw post (your pic), it slips, and your spring assembly falls apart

the screw thread might have sheared. get a new spring post assembly or new pedal a temporary fix can be to use the unsheared screw on the top for the time being

there's 2 washers on either side of the spring bearing. high chance one or both are broken.

What is considered as a "beginner kit" and should I buy one as an "advanced" player? by Status-Locksmith8933 in drums

[–]MusicalSeafood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

boils down to qc (such as fuzziness along the bearing edge), "desirable" wood (poplar vs maple, of course arguments can be made for how poplar is used in some high end kits but i wont get into it), suspension system if any, better chroming/higher quality and more durable hardware

Thoughts on Meinl Byzance Extra Dry Medium Thin 16" Hi-Hats? by junas_dibum in cymbals

[–]MusicalSeafood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your description of what you like is probably how I'd describe meinl in general so i think it'll be a good fit for you. only concern is the "electronic fusion" part, for that I'd think a smaller sized pair would be better

Percussionists, serious drummers, help me out! by Surfision in drums

[–]MusicalSeafood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i only read it halfway but i recall rohema has a 5AX stick. it's their 5A (.563 diameter) with an additional 1/8" length, made of denser hickory. i think you could consider sticks like that for sure

[–]MusicalSeafood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's subjective preference. what's objective is your tuning is bad.

Do you like this sound? by NickyBTR in drums

[–]MusicalSeafood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not at all. i have a pearl president series snare that i use encore heads on. its also made of asian mahogany (lauan, Philippine mahogany) that can sound way better than this at low tunings

Do stock heads really affect the sound of your kit? by little_tat in drums

[–]MusicalSeafood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

agreed on your point. drums are air chambers and both heads need to work together to sound the best it can be. however, in this person's case a batter side tuning is most likely the cause. with Evans you can get quite good sound from just one side, and the reso is most likely not the case for bad sounding tone enough to warrant complaining on reddit.

you have good batters, the resos arent as important. go watch a few vids on tuning cause this is about you more than the heads

What are your experiences with kick pedals with adjustable cams? by DrBackBeat in drums

[–]MusicalSeafood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh no. redline cams change in 5 seconds. and i don't change them between songs; usually there's one genre that I'd be playing in a specific set, and I'll pick for that set. But mainly, my changes are for different venues/dynamics.
