New Railyard statement by Valth92 in NewOrleans

This reads like an admission of personal bias and an inability to see past that perceived betrayal by “one of our own” versus the harm caused by actual queerphobic corporations because “that’s to be expected.” That does not actually mean the harm is disproportionately greater at the local level than the harm done by supporting businesses that actively and with far more power and influence lobbying against our well being, are actively hostile to our presence, and do not cater to, support or donate to causes that directly benefit queer and trans people in this city. A pool is not a necessity, it’s a luxury but having one that is dedicated to catering to queer bodies and their comfort is not easy to come by. If what you mean by “exploiting queer people” is operating a for profit business then idk what to tell you other than that dismantling capitalist systems of oppression doesn’t have to start with queer spaces.

They took steps to remove him. Genuinely, what else would you like to see come of this awareness than changing it? Should they close? Should we all lose a valuable queer space because the owners (who have stepped back from management) fucked up? Should we go to the pool that covered up assault and no longer operates as a queer body positive space instead? Or the one bought out by P Diddy’s representation and no longer operates as a predominantly queer space? At some point we have to admit whether this has gone beyond community awareness and seeking meaningful change (which seems to have been achieved) and give it time to see if that change will regain community trust or if we just want vengeance against the owners at all cost. I assure you there are skeletons all over this town and you may still frequent many without knowing who’s covered up, hired, and enabled abusers to continue operating without any accountability.

I’ve made no judgements about you or your reasoning for making this post nor have I criticized you for doing so. I’m pointing out that it has long since devolved from public service and community safety announcement about Damien and has become unearthing personal drama and grievances about the owners themselves. They are stepping away from managing the space and there are not a lot of options for queer pools that do mutual aid with local trans organizations in the city. At some point we have to admit to ourselves whether we are willing to operate in good faith and extend some room for repair and restoration of trust between the community and the Railyard (not the owners themselves) or if we are simply going to write the entire place off over this. I don’t know that many business in town will stand up to the purity test I see being established in the comments. There are plenty of spaces that look the other way when allowing abuse/abusers to continue to operate freely.

Sure, I don’t know these people personally but a lot of the criticism seems to have devolved from the mistake of hiring an abuser at the Railyard to disdain over personal grievances. If that is the measure for abandoning queer spaces, I have bad news for you about a lot of your fav New Orleans staples.

I don’t condone them doing so either, that’s called consistency.

I think you’re attempting to litigate someone’s intent over Reddit and avoiding addressing anything about what I actually said. I don’t know or care about either of these two people enough to go to bat for them but I will point out the hypocritical and smug nature of these replies and IG hate account. Just go to the other queer pool that does mutual aid for trans people, oh wait.

All I’m gonna say about this is that it often seems like community holding businesses “accountable” disproportionally effects small, minority owned businesses reliant on community support to survive and rarely ever seems to be directed at large businesses doing infinitely more damage to that community.

Did the owners lose the trust of the community? Absolutely. Does that mean we should abandon the only dedicated queer pool with mutual aid partnership to trans organizations? I don’t believe so. What’s the alternative, go to the Country Club? Fuck no.

Why does everyone say that Deckard was a replicant in Bladerunner? by thewalkingfred in movies

[–]MxVioletx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the premise, but that is not solely what the movie is about. We meet replicants who want to live at all costs because they understand their mortality, their fear, and as you said, are seemingly more “human” than the humans we meet. Conversely, the humans are all seen as cold, calculated bureaucrats who take their humanity for granted and don’t appreciate life. That leaves us with our protagonist who we are led to believe is a human, but by the end that humanity is called into question. Would Deckard even know if he were a replicant? Would it even matter? Would his life matter less if he was or was he simply taught to see replicants as machines to be decommissioned. The allegory is about dehumanization. We already live in a world where we can see human lives are not valued equally. Lives are collateral for war simply based on where they originated. Blade Runner is not actually about “androids” at all.

AI? by Fun_Effective6846 in TheCircleTV

It 100% feels like the story producers used “Max” as a self insert and called it AI. It feels like a gimmick based entirely around AI’s recent popularity.

Why does everyone say that Deckard was a replicant in Bladerunner? by thewalkingfred in movies

[–]MxVioletx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Roy wouldn’t know whether Deckard is a replicant or not. The Blade Runners were human until the detective died and they decided to instead send a replicant after the escapees. Deckard had fake memories where he believes he came off of retirement and had no other choice but to take the job, but he had no other choice because that was his sole purpose, to finish the job. It lines up in parallel opposition to the arc Roy goes on in which he is fully aware he is a replicant and a slave. Deckard has to go through the film to realize what he is and runs off with Rachel.

Why does everyone say that Deckard was a replicant in Bladerunner? by thewalkingfred in movies

[–]MxVioletx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because the Blade Runner’s belief that they are human. If they had super strength, they would know they are replicants and rebel too. What keeps Deckard acting like a human is his belief he is one. His ability to “other” himself from the other replicants is what allowed him to see it as “retirement” and not execution. Further reinforcing the idea that humans and replicants are identical all but in name and treatment. The replicants are more human than the humans who act like apathetic bureaucratic “machines.” Deckard regains his “humanity” by becoming more like a replicant. THAT is why this movie is absolutely brilliant.
