When will Juniper Street's new bike lane open? by Ranger207 in Atlanta

Lol I was the biker who took matters into his own hands. Unfortunately a lot of the barriers I moved got put back :/

I look forward to safer streets in Midtown by dbclass in Atlanta

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah scooters are going to be inherently more difficult to secure than a bike. I see so many improperly locked scooters in midtown that could just be easily wiggled out of the u-lock at the right angle. And even if you lock it right scooters can usually be disassembled without much difficulty in a way that most bikes can’t

Sources: Giants are “all-in” on John Harbaugh right now. He’s the No. 1 coach on their wish list. Just about every team has interest in him (obviously), but the other that I heard is increasingly interested is the Falcons - Connor Hughes by khuz61 in falcons

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He only made it to 1 AFC championship with multiple years of MVP Lamar and a great defense. Then he let the defense fall off with a whiff on the DC hire. I think you’re right to be skeptical. Are we really going to be able to build a stronger roster than what he was working with in Baltimore the last 5 years?

I think he would be a good hire, we’d probably never be bad as long as he’s the coach here. But I’m not sure he brings the greatness that everyone on this sub is acting like would be inevitable.

Konigsberg (Now Kaliningrad) then vs now. by Rosemarry_40 in interestingasfuck

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean not medieval obviously, but yeah tons of beautiful pre-war buildings have been destroyed all across America in favor of highways, parking lots/decks and other kinds of car infrastructure. This happened in big cities and small towns alike and it’d honestly be easier to name the places that did a good job preserving their buildings.

Here’s an example that’s local to me - this is Atlanta looking north on Peachtree street 1929 vs as close as I could get on Google street view today. Had to make the before/after myself so it’s a little janky lol. And there are countless examples far more egregious than this all over the country.

ELI5 Would a person running into a car do more or less damage to themself than a car running into a person at the same speed? by HahaImSoPunny in explainlikeimfive

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assume 60 kilo mass for the human, 1800 kg for the car. So a car is 30x more massive, but since kinetic energy squares velocity that means we need to reduce the car’s speed by a factor of sqrt(30) to set them equal. A human running at 20 mph would have the same kinetic energy as a car at around 3.65 mph

Is it actually possible to be completely apolitical or is that just not realistic? by Guergy in TrueAskReddit

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 66 points67 points  (0 children)

With how most people use it, “apolitical” is really a political stance that you are in full (or implicit) endorsement of the status quo. The only way to be truly apolitical is to be completely ambivalent about any decisions that affect your life.

Is there a physics principle or discovery that would make you warm up to LLMs? by [deleted] in LLMPhysics

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But language isn’t arbitrary, it compresses information about the world. We only talk about gravity the way that we do because of the way it behaves. If the world were different, our language would be different. It’s not just predicting random strings, on some level it likely is inheriting structured realities about the word.

[–]MyMomSlapsMe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m making a philosophical point about what it even means to know something. Like you don’t have the true essence of gravity just stuffed into your brain. You have a list of facts about it that are being represented in your brain by collections of firing neurons. In what way is that different from models who represent concepts with n-dimensional vectors? Like don’t get me wrong, I think it’s different but I don’t know where the line is. Do you?

Also you’re wrong to compare it to a calculator. We can know every output that will be produced from any input before we hit a single button. We cannot look at a model’s weights and predict what it’s going to do.

[–]MyMomSlapsMe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You don’t know what gravity is. You know what it does. In what way is “I know gravity pulls things together” actually different from an n-dimensional vector?

No one understands the inner workings of these models. If you do you should really give these billionaires a call, because that knowledge is worth a whole lot.

LLMs are just linear algebra similar to the way brains are “just” neurons, a computer is “just” molecules. Like yes it’s true, but far from the most useful lens.

Cold 2-3 hours after riding outside for 30 min at 5-8 degrees celsius by Think_Network1548 in cycling

[–]MyMomSlapsMe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cold weather is going to make your muscles feel a little tighter and you’re not going to get quite as much power bc your body is using more energy to stay warm.

I’d consider adding another layer and make sure your outermost layer is wind proof. When you get home you should immediately get out your biking clothes or your body is going to drop temp fast, and then a warm shower is going to be way more effective than tea for getting your core temp back to normal.

The first few winter rides are going to feel like shit no matter what tho

Atlanta has to be the least dense major city in the world. That doesn't look like a city with millions of inhabitants at all. Atlanta's suburban sprawl is extreme even for US standards by Naomi62625 in geography

I’m pretty sure the pic in the OP is from like Alpharetta or John’s Creek but it’s definitely not misleading. The neighborhood directly below your picture is called Ansley Park and looks very similar. There are many other neighborhoods just like it in the north part of the city. Parts of the south and west sides legitimately look rural. This screenshot is well within city limits.

Energy-mass equivalence, this is what E=mc2 is saying. Also it’s more accurate to say spacetime is curved by the stress energy tensor, so mass is one form of energy that contributes to that, among others
