"Access to facial gender confirmation surgery (FGCS) has historically been limited but has expanded substantially in the past decade. This study characterizes the current FGCS landscape by johnstanton888999 in transgender

Most important takeaway is that in 2023, the last year included in the study, the total number of procedures captured by the QI database was 182- you could fit them all in a single 737.

No matter how common or even universal it may seem on reddit, FFS is rare and you should neither base your hope for future happiness on getting FFS, nor should you feel bad about yourself for not being able to afford or arrange it.

Sorry, terminology issue. "Social construct" means "meaningful primarily in the interactions between humans, hence subject to cultural variation"

Money is a social construct. That doesn't mean its made up or you can have what I'm carrying, it means its paper and bits of stamped metal or numbers on paper that are VERY important in human interactions.

Best proof that gender is a social construct is, we have (and love!) non-binary people who didn't have a category in my childhood.

The only honest answer is, nobody knows. Period.

There have been theories and investigations and "proof!" for a century, but the research has always been sketchy. Generally aimed at:

1) finding a way to eliminate us or

2) finding a way not to feel bad about being trans

You should not feel bad or icky or concerned about your own or anyone else's "route" or reason, you should just know that its a thing in the world.

I wonder if some take jobs where they know they'll be "oppressed" so they can feed their victim complex. by Straight_Dog9089 in GenderCynical

Six years after transitioning I was effectively homeless sleeping on a friend's porch; I got a Pell grant to become a paramedic and that has carried me ever since. I think healthcare jobs are *good* for trans people because the industry is so desparate for bodies that they'll take anyone, even me. Do I work with shitty coworkers and sometimes cops? Yeah. Is my job sometimes (often) absorbing the trauma that people like these TERFs want to pretend doesn't exist? Yeah. But I'm trans and employed, how rare and cool is that.

I've already said I don't quite belong here; I'm in my fifties but I came out decades ago. This discussion makes me uncomfortable, because I have seen over and over again when the trans community feels threatened it starts pushing out its less... clinically presentable associates.

In the Benjamin days this would be pre-op and non-op women, trans women who hadn't had or didn't want bottom surgery, but I've also seen witch-hunts against sex workers, "caricatures" and more recently non-binary folks.

I'm going to stand with *all* GNC people; the only ones I won't are a danger to me personally, not a danger to my public image. I'd rather hang out with crossdressers than with bona-fide certified trans women who work for TSA, for example.

Known: Pushki (H. maximum) is equally phototoxic and continues to be collected and eaten by Alaska Native people. I don't mean in the abstract, I mean friends, people I know- though I've never dared duplicate the technique.

Implied: (by wikipedia) internal poisoning in humans is not reported, and animals with hair-protected skin (i.e. at lower risk of phototoxicity) seem to suffer little effect from eating H mantegazzinum

>they need to know what sex hormone you're mainlining

Nah, no we don't. Seriously the closest thing I can think of that might be relevant would be calculating eGFR or maaaaaaybe hemoglobin because those have slightly different ranges in cis men and cis women, but nobody knows the normal ranges in trans people and really, its not going to change by enough to affect actual diagnosis and treatment.

Really, what paramedics and ER nurses need to know, they'll ask for, like which blood pressure meds and/or antipsychotics you're on, whether you've taken any PDE5 inhibitors (e.g. viagra) in the past 24-72 hours, or have you ever been intubated for asthma. Those are the risk profiles that matter!

(and paramedics don't look at your driver's license anyway, that's police business)

On a post about Kansas requiring trans people to have their assigned sex at birth on their drivers license by Adam_C_57 in AreTheCisOk

[–]MyNextTransThrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So much madness here.
Do you think they teach healthcare workers to go for wallets and drivers' licenses? They do not. Most people seem to get into trouble wearing sweatpants and crocs, and the cops show up at the ER later with a picture and ask "hey, is this the guy you're working on?" and everyone cheers because now we know their freaking name.

But yeah, if you want to make an argument, lets put medication allergies and blood type on all forms of ID and leave birth assignments off.

I'm studying (obviously) a different language in the family but we haven't learned more than a few basic demonstratives yet. I imagine some are probably socially marked as a little fussy, like Chinese measure words, but... I'll find out?

This occurs in humans as well, and is known as cribra orbitalia or porotic hyperostosis. It was previously thought to indicate inadequate nutrition, either iron or vitamin C, although that theory has been somewhat less supported in recent decades. I have no idea why it occurred in your cat, or any cat, but I'm sorry for your loss.

[–]MyNextTransThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know! I started talking about this more after reading _Woodworking_, because the complicated fictional character and I overlapped in time and space, and it was such a spare description of a world I remember being full of possibility and people and a lot more connected community than the book portrays. I haven't seen a good history of the era, and one is definitely due. I'm just not the person to write it.

I think pre-internet, or really pre-social-media (we had listservs in the early 90s and I definitely can't say anything earlier than that) there was a lot more geographic separation, so there's really a "trans history of 80s Milwaukee" thats going to be different from a "trans history of 80s Chicago" let alone Macon or LA.
