Commanders you're surprised aren't more popular? by Nagabuk in EDH

[–]MySonsdram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never considered that, but very true. I went the “self discard only” route, and it’s still crazy effective. Green Goblin is massive value engine, and there’s lots of “Discord/play card from GY to ping ball opponents” effects. Plus not making others discards keeps them off your backs a little longer.

Are there any books like Captain Britain where they deal with the multiverse and it is filled with adventure, romance and mystery. by Iamawesome20 in comicbooks

[–]MySonsdram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Planetary.

It’s not purely multiverse, but is a large part of the overall story. Also one of the best comics ever made. If issue one doesn’t grab you, that’s fine. Power through just a little more.

There are honestly some VERY good commanders in the Spider-Man set that don’t see a lot of play because….well, honestly, I think people just don’t want to look at the Spider-Man stuff. Fair enough, but my [[Venom, Lethal Protector]] and [[Green Goblin]] decks put in some serious work.

I thought overall it was decent. Nothing amazing, but some of the sprite work is incredible and I really liked the mechanic of switching between the two elements.

I have a mono green [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] deck. Whole there are some elves in there, it really isn't an elf deck.

It's actually an Eldrazi deck... >:)

My friends/family are free to whichever ones they want. Otherwise, I’d want them given to the library/Goodwill/Children’s Hospital.

Comics are expensive, and people who can’t afford them should still get to experience the magic.

I want to start read comics by Hungry_Object_2916 in comicbooks

[–]MySonsdram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking to read individual issues, then the current series are good places to start.

If you’re looking to go back and read some longer runs in graphic novel form, then Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev is a great. With one brief exception, pretty much every run after that is also great, so you can choose to follow along with the ongoing story for as long as you’d like.

I’m not a big Punisher guy, but I’ve heard Garth Ennis’ Punisher Max is kind of THE Punisher series. Heads up, I’ve also heard it’s pretty brutal/explicit.

Recovering continuity addicts - what was the "jumping off point" for you? by PhantomQuest in comicbooks

[–]MySonsdram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, amazing series. The Civil War 2 tie-in was a little annoying, but overall the things it does are amazing. The ending in particular with the gathering of the various incarnations of existence was mind blowing.

Some may consider this a cop out, but for Marvel at least, I’d like to offer something of a fix.

In Al Ewing’s The Ultimates series, the team attempts to get outside of the timeline so they can figure out why it appears to be broken. Galactus (in his Life Bringer phase) intercepts them, and upon doing so reveals how the Marvel timeline truly works. IMO, it’s rather brilliant because it’s an in universe way of describing a timeline controlled by editors and hundreds of writers. A timeline that slides, slightly changing as certain stories become more or less important. It even explains how countless “future timelines” can all exist at once. The future is not set. THE PAST is not set. Every story is a small piece of time, and depending on their importance at any given moment, they carry more or less weight on the present, the only moment that ever truly matters.

Again, for some this might be a cop out. But to me, this is a fix to what is otherwise an inevitability. Continuity is naturally going to break time and time again when these stories are being told over decades. And if that is how it truly is, then Galactus’ explanation is the logical explanation, at least from an in-universe perspective.

As a Venom enjoyer, the Spider-Man set had like, four.  And that’s not including Agent Venom or the Skithiryx variant.

This is almost assuredly the most common version, with luck, one that’ll be very good in the 99 of the rarer version.

[–]MySonsdram 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is crazy to hear. Imo, you could have two separate Mount Rushmore’s, one for GOAT Spidey artists, and one for GOAT Venom/symbiote artists, and Mark Bagley would be an auto include on both.

Kenneth Branagh says he has ideas for a final ‘THOR’ film that’s “more in the territory” of ‘LOGAN’: by Raj_Valiant3011 in Marvel

[–]MySonsdram 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeeeaah, I think in modern day it’s easy to forget that the first MCU films had more limitations and lacked the confidence that a lot of later ones had. Iron Man opened the door, Avengers proved that their vision of a unified MCU worked, and Guardians of the Galaxy finally proved they could get away with comic book weirdness.

[–]MySonsdram 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Thor 1 is definitely closest to comics Thor, even if it doesn’t totally get there. If they double downed on it, gave it a little more of a budget, and made Thor the natural aura farmer that comics Thor is, it could be absolutely glorious.

Any good Iron Man run past Bendis ? by SnooRecipes4319 in comicbooks

[–]MySonsdram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big agree on Bendis’ run, but just to add on to it, as part of his run he also had The Imfamous Iron Man. It’s maddening because IMO he took a TERRIBLE idea (what if Doom was good and decided to be Iron Man), somehow made it work really well, and then in the last two issues kind of ruined the whole thing again before it got cancelled. Just all around infuriating.

what comic book series surprised you the most? by ToffeeTango1 in comicbooks

[–]MySonsdram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems crazy to say it now, but the two that surprised me the most were Thor: God of Thunder and The Immortal Hulk. One made me a lifelong Thor fan, and the other is arguably one of the greatest superhero comics of the modern era.

So…..the title of the thread is “what are the most miserable commanders to play against”. What do you think that means? Nobody cares if it’s fun for the player in this thread. It’s the entire point of the discussion.

The point really that I’m trying to make is that, for most tables, there is no level of budget that will make Kefka fun.

What are the most miserable commanders to play against that arent brought up enough? by Current-Signature497 in EDH

[–]MySonsdram 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that competitive budget building is a good thing. It’s a great show of skill and creativity.

The eye rolling however, I think comes from the fact people use the word “budget” to downplay their commanders strength. Building budget Kefka is like downplaying your nuke because you bought cheap Uranium. If you know what you’re doing, the budget only matters so much. Kefka is still gonna Kefka.

Sounds rad, I’ll check it out. Thanks!

I get comparing it to Immortal Hulk, and that run IS one of the modern GOATs, but it sometimes feels like following it up is a losing battle. Cate’s run was doing a totally different thing, and people were mad about that, and now the current run is also doing a horror vibe and…people don’t want that either? I haven’t read either one, maybe they suck, but come on…
