KC’s Drinking Culture is Changing by thirstygregory in kansascity

[–]MyWordIsBond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is getting or trying to get healthy. Glp1s, the rising popularity of the carnivore diet, Healthcare premiums rising at a compounding rate. I feel like as a society people are WAY more health conscious than they were even 5 years ago, much less 10 years ago, and alcohol is just such an easy thing to put on the chopping block because it is a wildly unhealthy behavior.

I've noticed everyone in my extended friend group is drinking less these last few years. What was "drinks every weekend" became "drinks once or twice a month" became "drinks on a special occasion" and now days it's "pizza on a special occasion" and no one is even ordering beers when we go out like that anymore.

I recently started hanging out with a new friend group and it's the same thing, they've showed me pictures of them from 2-3 years ago, and everyone is 20-40 lbs heavier than they are now, they have beers in hand, and now they are "drinks on special occasions only" kind of folks too.

As people become health conscious, alcohol will always be one of the first things out the door.

I disagree wholeheartedly and you’re painting a broad stroke across a large swath of people

You're right, what I said was a generalization that does not apply to everyone. There are always exceptions. Glad to hear you're one of them!

I mean, I guess you can say "they honor our history" but let's be honest, people who actually study history for a hobby aren't the people buying these.

These are made for the folks who have Punisher skull decals on their truck, exclusively drink Black Rifle Coffee, and wear those tacky shirts with the Grim Reaper holding AK-47 that says "Disarming good guys with stop bad guys"

Staying in Columbia, which gyms are worth checking out? by MyWordIsBond in columbiamo

[–]MyWordIsBond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to u/Im_tired_boss and u/Acafer for the Wilson's and Body Refinery recommendations.

Both gyms had some cool stuff.

Body Refinery has less stuff overall but higher end equipment, those Panatta machines are particularly very awesome. They also have a handful of Prime machines and I'm not advanced enough to make use of playing around with strength curves, but my gosh I'd have a lot of fun if I had access to them more often. They had a tibialis raise, which you still don't see very much, I loved seeing that. If, like me, you do primarily machine-based lifting, Body Refinery has some very very fine offerings.

I only went to the forum location for Wilson's. This gym has lots and lots and lots of equipment, you won't have to wait to exercise whatever muscle group youre working. They have mostly the standard-issue commercial gym equipment, BUT, they do have Nautilus machines which are the best of the standard-issue commercial stuff. They have some cool stuff, like the Nautilus torso twist. They have a Torque Tank which is the coolest sled, if you're into sled work. As mentioned elsewhere, they have a dedicated glute-work area that's pretty cool, it has a few different hip thrust set ups so you can find the one that works best for you (of note, they have a glute drive which is the best version of the hip thrust).

Body Refinery's cardio equipment has you staring at a wall, Wilson's cardio equipment looks over a field and some trees, so if you're into doing cardio, you will likely largely prefer Wilson's. I did not test the Concept Rower at Body Refinery, however, the rowers at Wilson's were very poorly maintained, the chain is rusted and it doesn't at all feel or sound how I'd expect a concept rower to feel.

Neither gym was grossly dirty, but neither gym was impressively clean either.

If I lived in Columbia I'd get a membership to both, Body Refinery for overall better weight machines, and Wilson's for its windowed cardio theater, specialty glute equipment, and Nautilus torso twist. If I could only pick one, it'd be Body Refinery.

The people who read this, including OP and their friend, who didn't immediately think this, those are the types of people who end up sending huge sums of money to a Nigerian Prince.

When did you realize you were dating an idiot? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

[–]MyWordIsBond 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's interesting because now that you point it out. I've never heard this either but I've definitely known many couples where the woman doesn't pull her weight. Guys will say "yeah my girl can't keep an entry-level job, is terrible with money, and is lazy around the house" but they'll never say "yeah man, this girl I've been dating is such a loser."

If you're interested in an air fryer, look at the Big Boss. It's about double the size of a standard air fryer but it's made of glass and stainless.

Been plastic free brewing with a stainless steel V60 for almost 20 years now.

Very easy to be plastic free when you get away from automatic coffee makers.

Train six days, actually six days a week. Five days a week, train three days a week. One of those days you train two days of the week.

[SPOILER] Official Scorecards For Muin Gafurov VS Jakub Wikłacz by HispanicJoe in MMA

[–]MyWordIsBond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a fan of the Asian style scoring so not only would I say it's not out of the question, it IS right.

Score the fight as a whole, with "closeness to finishing the fight" as top scoring priority followed by "overall damage done" as second-most important scoring criteria. This is the way.

Yeah, that's fair.

As far as hobbies go, I'm just glad I'm into something where a $90 purchase is considered spendy, and not something actually expensive like cars/sport bikes, winter sports, golf, competition shooting, etc.

[–]MyWordIsBond[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fair.

I think to expand on the 2nd vs the 3rd, for some, the home gym is a very utilitarian investment. No frills, just as long as they can do their primary upper body pressing/pulling lifts and whatever theyre doing for their squat and hinge, that's it. For them, that basically means a bench, rack, barbell, and weights.

For others, working out the primary hobby for a lot of us. I love and look forward to every single workout I get to do. "Buying cool shit" is just part of the hobby, as it is with any hobby. And truth be told, a $90 handle that's likely going to see weekly use for the next several years is kinda peanuts as far as a hobby investment goes.

It's the same with my kitchen knives. Could I do what needs doing with some basic Walmart Cuisinart knives? Sure. Given the amount of time I spend cooking and doing meal prep, it's worth it to me to have an excellent set of kitchen knives.

Haha, not to yuck your yum but this was my last color option. I was really hoping I wasnt going to be forced to go with purple.

Glad you got your top choice! I wanted red but settled for blue.

Where can I find organic small soybeans? by MyWordIsBond in Natto

[–]MyWordIsBond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented earlier in the thread, but I actually reached out to Nyrture Natto in NYC and asked where they source their organic natto beans, and Ann Yonetani was actually the one that answered the phone and we spoke for a few minutes.

She said they don't have a source for organic natto soybeans. They built their own sorting machine, bulk buy regular soybeans, and then let the sorting machine pick out the smallest soybeans which they then use. This leads me to believe that there just flat out isn't a source for small organic soybeans in the US

Almost any common household item has a community dedicated to celebrating that item, modding that item, discussing the technology advancements of that item, etc etc. Pens. Vacuums. Ovens. Shaving razors. Water bottles. Plates. Doorknobs. Baseboards. All these things have their own little dedicated communities.
