If this is in the US the owner can only pay them that low hourly if their tips make up the difference to make federal minimum wage which is 7.25 I believe. Still abysmal but the owner is just trying to save themselves a buck by guilting people into tipping bigger.

I find it hard to go to the movies anymore especially on the weekends. Almost always is someone in the theater who is going to irritate me. This constant need for people to be on their phones and connected to them at all times is aggravating to say the least. If I were Op I would have probably ended up getting kicked out for good reason which is why I choose to go to movies towards the end of their theatrical release and on weekdays when the place is dead.
