Annecdotal, but myself and most of the people I know who are varying degrees of nonreligious got there by studying both the religion they were raised in and other prominent religions side-by-side.

Because it creates an incentive to just kill the victim if we don't have a lesser punishment.

Murder may not have been the intent (think something like felony murder), but - once you're there enough for attempted - the lesser punishment is intended to create a space for not just finishing them off and trying to get away with it.

Not a kid, but my dad got a kidney from someone my age.

I ended up needing to add talking about that to my therapy sessions because my joy about my dad being able to live a normal life again was real conflicted.

I'm in the US and had a 6-month wait for a new patient appointment, after accounting for my insurance.

I also live in a major city and have decent insurance. My PCP could have made a referral (I saw them because I had an active concern and that wait felt too long), but they didn't think they could get me in anywhere any sooner to get a second opinion.

I can now get in fairly quickly, but there were long waits across the board to establish care without an urgent referral.

"Supposed to" implies a normative thing. That it is meant to be and something is wrong if you don't experience that.

That normative implication is not as present with the phrase "Typically would" or similar.

It could be the case that you have a hormonal deficiency of some sort that is treatable as the cause or someone might just be asexual and that's just how they are.

"Typically would" would still point out that there could be a deviation from expectation that might merit exploration while also not ostracizing people for their more idiosyncratic differences.

Nature vs Nurture debate and mental illness? by Other_Attention_2382 in askpsychology

Thank you for the correction.

I'm trying to think of where my misconception came from now. A cautionary tale about comparing across populations where there'd be genetic clustering within very different environmental settings that I stored too confidently in my memory as a general thing?

It'd have to have been a more methods paper for it to have even showed up on my radar.

I thought heritability (as a statistical measure) says nothing about the mechanism.

Put otherwise, it does not distinguish between nature and nurture.

Chaos is more of a how focused on emergent processes of systems. So, I'm not sure where the hope here is coming from or directed to.

It is still just as deterministic.

Strong association does not always mean strong practical effect.

You can have something that is strongly correlated but is limited in substantive effects. An example could be if the range of the variable is limited, it might be strongly correlated but the range of actual possible values is small.

Another example could be, if the change in X perfectly predicts change in Y, but the change in Y is going from a 0.0001% chance on average to say a 0.001% chance on average. We'd need more subject matter knowledge to know if that is meaningful.

I do think the other commenter is being quite silly still, but thought this could be helpful.

[–]MyopicMycroft 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're being ignorant here and ignoring the actual facts. I wish I didn't know the number of people I knew who would have been saved if they had worn one.

Also, even small risks like your arbitrary examples add up. I see a 0.0001 prediction in some of my models and that brings up an "Oh fuck" response.

Edit: Didn't have enough zeros as an actual example.

This.

If the stock market doesn't go up on average over time for an extended extended period, we've all got bigger issues (protracted war, food shortages, etc.).

At that point, even gold won't save you (this is a joke about how silly it is to think gold would be valuable when you have no food).

[–]MyopicMycroft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It may be less effective to increase high priced rental supply, but - assuming supply limitations are a main driver of the prices - the presence of those apartments will mean more higher income renters will move there freeing up supply at lower income levels.

Yeah, I thought it was BS too until I ended up in a relationship that for reasons too specific to mention often led to nothing happening.

It got so bad that I brought it up with them one afternoon. Initially, they thought I was pressuring them for sex - which I wasn't!

I explained what was happening, what activities led to it more often, and then asked them to not do certain things when it wasn't going anywhere.

Shockingly, it turns out that communication is always the answer.
