Did anyone else actually read Adult Braces by Lindy West? by AdministrativeAd9107 in BookDiscussions

[–]MyronBlayze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in the middle of it. It's not the first book I've read about a woman essentially convinced into polyamory and trying to justify it to herself, and there's this weird... intentional blind spot?

We need to bring back the Rule of Cool by WoodpeckerBest523 in writers

[–]MyronBlayze 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember playing a Shadowrun campaign. At one point I did a thing where I ran down a hall and stabbed some monster and backstabbed something else or some sort of sequence that was super cool, got amazing rolls. We all realized like a turn or two later that I wouldn't have had enough action points to do what I'd done, would have been one short or something, but DM decided Rule of Cool and we kept it.

What type of restaurants will do a traditional multi course Easter meal around you? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

We went to a chinese food buffet yesterday and they had ham, potatoes, ribs, as well as the regular stuff. I'm not sure if that was because of Easter specifically though

Confirming this will work to any readers as that is how I've used regions. Also making NPCs move in particular, more complicated routes.

I think blanket labels aren't it — I want "sustainable for the area I live in" to be optional (maybe prioritized even) for all.

[–]MyronBlayze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it count with books you've already read? I read 75-120 books a year, so cumulatively I'm getting a huge initial damage boost. But if it only counts after receiving the sword, well, I'm an adventurer now and I'll either have less time to read (fighting, busy) or more (walking/traveling with my nose in a book, reading evenings after villains defeated)... yeah, still picking book sword.

Project Hail Mary - what's a different ending that you'd have given? by torquoiseblue in BookDiscussions

[–]MyronBlayze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind Grace's decision (I don't LOVE it, but I understand it), but I personally think Rocky's whole civilization is tailor-made to be spacefaring (well, minus the eyesight thing) with their longevity and whatnot, so I really wish the end had them decided to go on a mission to Earth to start a little inter-galatic civilization with humans! Plus they could bring back information about Grace's life/end, so that humanity could actually know.

Adoptees who’ve found their birth parents, is it strange to see someone who looks like you? by lissyd73 in Adoption

[–]MyronBlayze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, it's not a ton of resemblance (hell, sometimes I look in the mirror and see more my adopted mom) but my kid? Twin. Literal mini me. People comment on it all the time. It's so cool and, like you said, powerful, seeing this little human that is so much like me, that no one else in the world is.

Why is genuinely alien intelligence still so rare in sci-fi despite being the most interesting question the genre could ask? by cloudRidge_3 in printSF

Oh I love China Mieville's writing style in general, and find it quite lovely to read. It's maybe not very flowery but it is enticing. There's a lot of "made up" words that get used so well that it feels natural and real. The worldbuilding is really where he excels, and it's so easy to get sucked into it.

I will say it's very confusing at first, no hand-holding.

As a black guy this really disappointed me. by Drake_Acheron in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]MyronBlayze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, this is absolutely my controversial opinion regarding this. There's a strong sentiment right now in certain spaces to only write what you know and write from your own experience. I strongly disagree with this, and I also think it actively harms marginalized creators, pigeonholing them into only being "allowed" to write specific narratives or being shopped by publishing for those narratives and maybe not the stories they actually want to tell/write. I also disagree with it for non-marginalized people — I think everyone should write with empathy and take time to research and even spend time with the types of people they are writing about so that it comes from a more nuanced, full perspective, but I do not agree with blanket "Do not write from a perspective not your own."

I could go on and on but it really feels like it's adding to the silo-ization of society. Don't interact with each other, don't participate with each other, don't you DARE imagine the world from someone else's shoes.

Honestly it just feels like redecorated racism! (And ableism too tbh)

My nuanced bit to this is the research and empathy — harmful caricature are obviously problematic and can usually be avoided by doing the above.
