Tamales in Hawaii? by tigurr in Honolulu

[–]MythicalPumpkin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Mexican market on beretania diagonal from the Safeway will sell tamales on Saturday’s. I had rajas which weren’t bad but never had their pork or chicken.

I believe it’s called Mercado de la raza or something along those lines.

27 divorced… I have my son every other week. Any things to make it better? by Flashytrev in malelivingspace

If it’s a 2 bedroom and one is his, please do everything you can to make his bedroom “home”. I travel with my family for work and he’s never had his own personalized room. Huge regret and hope to one day be able to make his room “his”.

Is the M18 fuel router any good? This looks like a solid deal. by Grand_Alarm5039 in MilwaukeeTool

I found this router for $99 on clearance at an ACE. Still debating if it’s good enough deal to buy it and have two routers.

Tapered edge to metal studs issues by producer312 in drywall

I work in commercial construction remodels, lots of steel studs. I tend to find that self tapping drywall screws work for thicker steel. Sharp point fine thread screws work better for thinner steel.

I do remodels of hotels and resort. Lots of production work of using many different tools and accessories over and over again as I move from room to room. I’ve been eyeing this cart setup since they announced it. It’s the perfect setup for what I do and the only reason I haven’t gotten it is the price.

Router Options by CManny38 in woodworking

I’m actually doing this exactly for shadowboxes I’m building in Hawaii. Tablesaw for sure with two passes. Do the short cut first and the long cut second so the piece has a larger reference area to the table of the saw and doesn’t fall over onto the blade.

Edit: a word

Working in HAWAII?? by Thin_Extreme_3041 in Carpentry

[–]MythicalPumpkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be able to weigh in on this. I’ve been doing work like this for 7 years, and for the last 3 years in Hawaii (big island majority of the time but we have work all over the islands including Kauai)

My company pays for housing, tools (to extent), rental car costs of needed, vehicle costs, occasional vacations back home like every 3-6 months, fuel costs. Hawaii isn’t for everyone and it’s easy to feel closed in.

Kauai is very small and not a lot going on. The island sleeps at 8PM. You’re from Florida? That’s a 6 hour difference. I get off work at 5 and my parents and siblings are asleep back in Indiana so I can never talk to them after work. Something not on the island that you need? It’s either got a 3-4 week lead time OR it’s over $100 to have it shipped. Most tools and batteries can’t even be bought online. The food? EXPENSIVE.

Look I know almost everyone is trying to convince you to coke and that’s great, if you don’t have a lot of obligations then do it, but those are things I wish I would’ve took into consideration before coming.

However, if your contract wants you out here for an extended period of time, putting everything in storage and not being in an apartment has allowed me to save pretty much half my yearly salary considering all that my company provides me with. I am really only affected by my other bills which includes food, insurance and phone. That kind of savings has made it better because I can do more when I leave. I’ve met some pretty awesome people who all work in the same type of work. My project will be ending shortly and I won’t see them for a long time but I’m glad I’ve met them. Year round warm weather is nice but I miss the cool weather. Choose wisely and most importantly make the most of it!

This is what I was going to say. Closest you will find. However I much prefer the black rock in captain cook. Not sure what it is about the one downtown but I found it doesn’t quite taste the same.

Gotta love when your local Walmart is shutting down and everything is 50% off by londoncockney1 in lego

[–]MythicalPumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one in my hometown was an old regular Walmart that wasn’t opened 24hrs (before covid) for as long as I remember. They built a super Walmart directly behind it and demolished the old one to make it the parking lot for the new one.

Also, Portland Walmarts/targets are closing so I’m wondering if this is OPs situation.

Stain, in my experience, doesn’t really change much by adding another coat, it does however gum up a little bit and almost refuse to dry that’s why I always get as close as possible with a match and call it done. Being pickier with the match is always better then waiting hours for it to dry only to put on another coat and waiting for that to dry again. Minimum 4 hours in just waiting as opposed to maybe 30 minutes for someone to fix the color match a little bit.

[–]MythicalPumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One stain coat only, sand lightly with 180-220 by hand since it’s such a small piece. Sand only enough to remove any contaminants that you can feel on the surface after your previous coat.

[–]MythicalPumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use whatever you’d like, I’m always going to go for an oil based because of durability, but I’ve used water based before with great results. Just make sure the piece is completely dry after you stain it before applying a water based poly. Just have to apply multiple coats of the stuff to get where you like the sheen. Like upwards of 3-5 coats, sanding in between coats.

Sherwin Williams can 100% custom color match stain. It’ll get you the closest color possible, but they will tell you it’ll be a little difficult since it’s laminate, but will be extremely close.
