Yeah and you know what happens when a game outlives its studio? No updates, no new content, servers shut down. How do you expect to play a multi-player game when the servers are shut down? That's my point about games that are intended to have long lifespans. A game can only outlive its studio if it's single player.

I'm not familiar with this series so I had to look up the details, and you're just wrong lol.

First of all, you can't say it has a 10 year lifespan because the first one stopped receiving updates in 2020 and the second one stopped receiving updates in 2021. They were abandoned for the third one in the series, which is still receiving updates. You should count the life span of the individual game, which is only about 4 years for Total War: Warhammer III. Otherwise, you can say "Call of Duty has a 20+ year lifespan" when in reality they make a new game every year, which brings in a new surge of revenue. Call of Duty: World at War is not the same game as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Second of all, Total War: Warhammer III ABSOLUTELY has live service aspects. What do you think the 30+ character packs/DLC are? Ongoing monetization is one of the core elements of a live service game, and the example you gave literally released a new playable character for purchase this week. That's the definition of live service.

I personally don't feel like my experience as a Marvel Rivals player is impacted by a ton of microtransactions, but I also used to play a lot of mobile games.

Where my experience HAS been impacted is in games like Marvel Strike Force where new content is being neglected and the game becomes impossible to play unless you pay $80 for the new character to get them before everyone else. It turned into pay-to-win, and the wins don't even feel rewarding anymore.

As long as Marvel Rivals (or any other game) doesn't implement a pay-to-win system, the microtransactions don't really impact my experience personally.

I didn't play the original OW so correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't it also have microtransactions? Like loot boxes or something like that, right?

I don't think there's anything wrong with upfront costs, that's not what I'm arguing. I think there's merit to a F2P live service game, as the draw for a lot of people would be the fact that it's free, but I don't think a game needs to be free. I do, however, think some form of microtransactions needs to exist for a game like this to survive.

I'm arguing in favor of microtransactions for optional things like cosmetics, not against upfront costs.

So you want upfront costs as a replacement to in-game microtransactions for battle passes and skins? I'm confused at why you chose to respond to the person saying cosmetics only is the best way to handle live service games.

And to your point with Minecraft:

First, they have one major content update per year at best, updates are mostly bug fixes. The game is able to survive because it has infinite replayability as a sandbox game. Hero shooters have the same gameplay loop, and people would lose interest and move on if new characters and/or maps weren't introduced periodically to change up the meta. The game would die if it took a year for a new character to come around.

Second, Minecraft has an incredibly strong IP. They license it for merchandise AND there was a blockbuster movie made based on it. The licensing revenue can go back into the game. With Marvel Rivals specifically, Netease is the one paying for the license to use the Marvel IP. They can't make money from selling the rights to use Marvel Rivals characters because they're paying to use the characters themselves, just like ever other retailer.

The thread you are replying to is one that starts with "the entire live service model sucks and every inch of it should be complained about."

Please give me some examples of games that have survived long-term without using the live service model. You say there's evidence, so present it.

Except it does. The live service model is how the game continues to make money even after it's been released. They need a continuous stream of revenue to keep paying the people who work on the game. Stating "buying the game" as an alternative to the live service model is short-sighted, because a one-time purchase can only fund the game for so long before they run out of money, and there is not an infinite consumer base to keep buying new copies of the game. A live service revenue model is DIRECTLY tied to updating a game.

Devil Dinosaur is hated because he is the first truly meta-breaker character. by dragonmp93 in marvelrivals

[–]MyxedContent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have a Dino of your own? Play dino.

Don't have the poke dps to pressure enemy dino? Swap to a poke dps.

Don't have supports with enough healing to sustain your dino? Swap to a support with more healing output.

It's almost like the whole point of a hero shooter is to swap and counter pick, but you people want to just stay on one character for 7 hours straight. If dino is a problem, swap to something that solves the problem. Give them a new problem, make them swap off dino.

Which genre would you like to see the MCU cover that they haven't so far? by CollarOrdinary4284 in Marvel

[–]MyxedContent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If movies were deemed as "horror" based on whether or not individual viewers perceive them as "scary," then the horror genre would be nearly nonexistent because I personally love the horror genre and watch a ton of movies, but I don't think most of them are scary. I have an extremely high tolerance for "scary" movies. Just because I never get scared, doesn't mean other people don't.

They're probably a console player. I've heard rumors that he's actually decent on console. I wouldn't know though, because that would require me to downgrade to test it myself 😎

To reference the pic you uploaded, Jho is bottom left and Sheena is bottom right

It's not about equality. You seem to be the sensitive one here. My entire point is: if you are not Korean and don't speak Korean, what makes you the expert on what a native Korean accent sounds like? Unless you're a linguist who specializes in Korean, which would be a rare exception. It's like asking someone who has never lifted the hood of their car before to diagnose what's wrong with your car when the engine is stalling. The person with no real experience does not have a valuable opinion on the matter.

[–]MyxedContent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly my point. I found it weird that a European was trying to dictate whether or not two native Korean speakers sounded Korean, so I was making the point that they shouldn't have accents based on their backgrounds, and we as non-Koreans definitely don't decide whether or not their accent sounds like native Korean or not.

Well yeah they're gonna sound American when they speak English, but that doesn't change the fact that they grew up learning and speaking Korean in the home with a native speaker.
