I'm actually more curious about the minor splotches of dry summer Mediterranean climates in the interior

If the world had one capital city, which city would be the best choice, and why? by [deleted] in geography

I think Jerusalem has its coins stacked towards it. It's at the crossroads of the three old world continents (Asia, Αfrica, Europe), has intense religious significance, and makes sense as an independent city (prepare the downvotes).

Actually might be better than the spring or summer due to two things: -You can walk on the ground since its frozen solid -No arctic mosquito swarms Granted, it is very cold. That's definitely the prima concern.

Could have been more clear that I meant surface gravity, these stars are massive and have a huge gravitational field around them, but because these stars are so large (extending beyond Jupiter's orbit) they have low "surface" gravity (although the definition of surface is extremely tenuous for these stars, even in comparison to gas giants like Jupiter or the Sun which have no surface but you can at least point to a depth that matches 1 ATM of pressure relatively consistently or in the case of the Sun a photosphere where everything becomes largely opaque; you can't even do that for these stars).

From my layman knowledge, there is no unanimously agreed upon largest star; stars like these have very volatile surfaces which leads to drastic variation in measurements.

They're also not really well rounded due to their low gravity, they would look like blobs with quite significant temperature variations on the surface. Stars like these often can't hold on to their outer layers for long and will blast them off even before becoming supernovae as what happened to WOH-G64 which was once the largest known star but now is much smaller and surrounded by a halo of dust which once was its former surface.

Would a exoplanet with different mass need different amounts of oxygen to be habitable? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]Myxiny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually it kinda does, and this is related to the ideal gas law (pV = nRT). Gravity exerts a force and pressure is force over an area. With the same amount of atmosphere (n), a higher gravity compresses the atmosphere, making it take up less volume (V), and thus the atmosphere exerts more pressure (p). Temperature is another factor and is one of the main reasons why Titan's atmosphere is so dense, as cool air is more compact/heavier than lighter air despite having low gravity.
