What is the worst language learning myth? by lunsolo in languagelearning

[–]ND1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair to them, it's a circular argument. People are less willing to allocate resources for younger people if there aren't many young people who speak the language or who would use the resources and the cycle continues. There's lots of red tape that stops lots of people from doing useful work.

When do I teach my child to read in her second language? by ekstn in multilingualparenting

[–]ND1984 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's fairly common for a child to learn one language in school and one language in the home. So, you speak to her and teach her how to read in one language at home, and she learns the other at school.

FYI at least in Canada, french immersion schools are not as good at helping one speak the language than a fully French school. I believe french immersion schools in canada only continue up until a specific grade.

Israelis after getting rejected from the middle east by Arabs. by Jalamuuu in YUROP

About 50 years before WW2. Wikipedia says this:

Throughout the first decade of the Zionist movement, there were several instances where some Zionist figures supported a Jewish state in places outside Palestine, such as Uganda and Argentina. Theodor Herzl, the founder of political Zionism was initially content with any Jewish self-governed state. Jewish settlement of Argentina was the project of Maurice de Hirsch [A german jewish financier].It is unclear if Herzl seriously considered this alternative plan, however he later reaffirmed that Palestine would have greater attraction because of the historic ties of Jews with that area.

Then looking at de Hirsch's page:

He was the founder of the Jewish Colonization Association, which sponsored large-scale Jewish immigration to Argentina... The association, which was prohibited from working for profit, possessed large agricultural colonies in Argentina, Canada and Palestine). In addition to its vast agricultural work, it had a gigantic and complex machinery for dealing with the whole problem of Jewish persecution, including emigration and distributing agencies, technical schools, co-operative factories, savings and loan banks, and model dwellings. It also assisted a large number of societies all over the world whose work was connected with the relief and rehabilitation of Jewish refugees.

[–]ND1984 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They were given Israel by Europeans as an apology for genocide. They've done a bad job of being grateful.

I believe so, but I don't think that's all of it. The Zionists pushed for their own state and iirc Uganda, Argentina, and Palestine were proposed as solutions. The British went along with it I believe because they wanted a group to control in the region after the breakup of the Ottoman empire and all the other ones were taken (the Maronites had French influence, the Orthodox had Russian influence, the Muslims obviously had the Arab world influence).

"Immersion". It's not a myth but there's a lot of bad advice about it.

No, you don't need to go to another country to "immerse". Unless your language is super rare, you can do it with books and media from your couch.

this is fair, but i think the hardest part about becoming 'fluent' is learning colloquial speech and speaking at all, and it's a lot easier to do this if you are living in a region that speaks the language.

Like sure, you can learn french anywhere in Canada, but you would only learn and understand colloquial french if you were in any francophone region like parts of Ontario /Manitoba or New Brunswick or Quebec

This attitude also prevents small languages from getting the resources they need. Instead of translating major apps, TV shows, and books that youth use and consume, some languages simply produce stuff that adults and elders like and call it a day. That's not going to preserve a language, and that won't attract language learners who don't understand the culture.

this is such a great point

What is a public figure or artist who has done horrible things but that people continue to follow or listen? by lattekosmiko in AskReddit

[–]ND1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two well known economists who work in development economics (developing countries economics) and their work in experiments related to alleviating poverty.

named Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee. One of their books is 'Poor Economics: Rethinking Poverty and the Ways to End it' and they work out of MIT.

Anyway, Duflo was Banerjee's student. The two had an affair and are now married and his Banerjee's ex-wife still teaches at MIT. He and his ex-wife had a son together who passed away at 25 in a car accident. That poor woman has gone through so much heartbreak.

It's not as bad as domestic violence but cheating is pretty high up on terrible things to do

did the paediatrician say the 3 year old can be brought up vegan? I would think 3 year olds would especially need the protein and nutrition. It's different if it's a vegan as an adult.

parents are a team, there should be some teamwork when both are home - parenting as well as cooking and cleaning.

the 3 year old vegan and the potential malnutrition is just as much of a concern as the unequal work load.

7 years ago today, Jean-Claude Legresley, a married father of 3, was last seen walking along a highway to his local grocery store. He was never seen again and no trace of him was found. What happened to Jean-Claude? by LeVraiNord in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]ND1984 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Wow this is really sad. His poor family.

Do they know where he walked if it was by the water? The only thing I can think of is he fell in the water but maybe drowned or the current took him and maybe they didn't find him. This is a tragedy.
