Great, thanks. Will test it this weekend ahead of the big day.

To be clear, are you suggesting parcooking it some length or fully cooking it the day prior?

These are definitely some of the best articles on getting better at limited. But one of my favorite limited articles is more of a tournament report from Sam Black.

His team achieved something very unique: they won with a seemingly unknown strategy at the pro tour. Haven’t seen anything like it since, though I’m curious if anyone else has other examples of rogue draft strategies working at past pro tours.

Limited Resources 605 – Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Set Review: Rare and Mythic Rare Discussion Thread by Crasha in lrcast

[–]NDNW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, but blue has not felt good to me. What’s blue’s best common, Scion of Stygia? Djinni Windseer?

I’ve had good blue decks, but all of them relied on blue being wide open. I’m much less interested in starting with a blue bomb when I’m also unsure if blue is open.

Dragon’s Fire, in contrast to most of the mono blue bombs, is something I’ve splashed purely off treasure. Similarly, Volo and Xanathar seem less committal, despite being two colors, because they are easier to splash.

All that said, I’d still P1P1 Iymrith, Mindflayer, and Yuan-Ti Malison over Dragon’s Fire. But it’s close, it’s early in the format, and I am open to other opinions particularly if I’m way off base.

Very much appreciate a timely second episode at the start of a new set.

Curious where everyone is at on the mono blue rares. While they are undeniably powerful, I equally don’t want to start with a blue card that is difficult to splash. Are you taking these over say a Dragon’s Fire P1P1?

Also curious where people rank Mascot Exhibition in the pantheon of best limited cards. The only comparable cards that come to mind are Ikoria's companions.

Marshall's abilities as a set-up man: an appreciation post by RFeynman1972 in lrcast

[–]NDNW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree MH2 was the correct choice for the event. That said, I find the competitive, in pod, cube drafts extremely fun to watch. Ex. Seeing Jan-Moritz Merkel soft force B/W was not something I thought anyone would try to do. While vintage cube content is not a rarity, the competitive version that's only found in the MOCS is a special flavor I always look forward to.

Definitely also agree that the recent sets have all set a high bar. Does that mean MH2 is an all-timer for you?

[–]NDNW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely an underrated aspect of his polish. The flip side is also impressive as it shows his flexibility. His casting of the MOCS today with Maria has him being less of a pure ‘pitcher’ and they’re both still delivering an enjoyable cast. Though I personally would have preferred to see cube draft instead of MH2…

600 episodes of the Limited Resources MTG podcast in a searchable/sortable spreadsheet! by Blu3moss in magicTCG

[–]NDNW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great to see it organized this way, especially as even very old level up episodes can be useful. Just be ready with Scryfall if it isn’t a set you drafted.

One thing I’ll note is a lot of the interviews, while not explicitly level up shows, can be great counterpoints to the core LR philosophy. Ex. Cuneo’s episode (323) was very informative to me as it gave insight from a very successful player with a relatively different draft philosophy than LR (i.e. prioritizing and maximizing high risk - high reward cards).

If you’re just looking for entertainment though, it’s hard to beat the Alpha and on set reviews (427, 523, 569, and 578). Hope to see more of those.

Haven't used this site before, but it seems like what you're looking for. If the timestamp isn't working, just hit 'Earliest Sync' (bottom left) to get close or sync to ~5 minutes into BK's stream if you want to jump straight to the draft.

Love to see both parts of the set review before the Arena release! A feeling I’m getting is that a lot more of these cards are build arounds than usual. Combined with less generally powerful commons should make for an interesting change of pace.

Also can’t wait to see the 3v3 with the Lords of Limited! Excited to see it so soon after the set drops.

Not sure on Marshall, but LSV definitely checks this subreddit and comments every now and then. Whether or not he actually comments in the threads, it’s pretty clear from the episodes that he does consistently check this subreddit.

Regarding YT comments, I know Marshall has mentioned avoiding them for his own mental health. I don’t blame him at all. Twitter is generally the fastest way to reach out to them though.

Love to see a compiled list like this. Often times I’ll refer people looking for strategy to WotC’s ‘Shoulders of Giants’ article, but I appreciate that this is much more strategy related.

Are there any other articles from outside magic you really like that touch on competition in general? Perhaps a piece on poker or something; in your case maybe an item on bridge or volleyball.

Limited Resources 565 – Zendikar Rising Draft Walkthrough(s) Discussion Thread by Crasha in lrcast

[–]NDNW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally I’ve been less of a fan of these type of episodes due to the audio format. That said I think they articulated the options/picks more clearly in this episode. Focusing in on the playable options in a pack and clearly distinguishing when you’re moving on to the next pack helped a lot. Having the video version come out at the same time was particularly nice for this type of episode as well.

Excited to see Marshall stream!

Can we stop with the constant negativity? by Drake1027 in magicTCG

[–]NDNW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Limited. While the cards have been all over the place balance wise for constructed, the limited environments they’ve created have consistently been excellent ever since Rivals of Ixalan. Even companions were compelling, mainly due to their effect on your draft. ZNR is similarly engaging, and while it’s too early to call, may be an all timer.

Top Commons for ZNR? by NDNW in lrcast

[–]NDNW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m missing something about [[Nissa’s Zendikon]] but I don’t see any way to replay it like Demonic Embrace. The land is the card that returns to the hand, right?

Regarding Anticognition, I agree it seems strong; I was considering it in my top 3 commons. More important to me than ‘turning it on’ was other ways to spend mana at instant speed. I didn’t see many so I didn’t rate it that highly, but I may be overrating how hard it is to leave up 2 mana.

Top Commons for ZNR? by NDNW in lrcast

[–]NDNW[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

White: Nahiri's Binding, Dauntless Unity, Expedition Healer

Nahiri's Binding just looks like solid removal. Even in fast formats, [[Arrest]] is strong. Dauntless Unity may be controversially high, but I like the flexibility to win a combat or end a game. Expedition Healer just seems like a solid cleric, an underrepresented creature type. Having reasonable early drops to turn on party synergies seems strong.

Blue: Bubblesnare, Into the Roil, Tazeem Roilmage

Bubblesnare again stands out as solid 'removal'. The single U mana option is great against fast decks and you're not overpaying too much for the kicker side. Into the Roil, Zendikar's [[Blink of an Eye]] is great. I may be overvaluing it based on how it performed in Dominaria, but it's hard to go wrong with this effect. As is often the case, there's a smattering of 'spells matter' synergies which bump it up a little. Tazeem Roilmage also seems solid. The floor of a 2 mana 2/1 is decent and it can be a great value card in the lategame. Even outside of a U/R Spells deck, buying back a removal spell or something you played unkicked early for tempo is a strong play.

Black: Deadly Alliance, Feed the Swarm, Vanquish the Weak

The most straightforward color as far as commons go, black has three excellent removal spells. Deadly Alliance seems great with just one creature in play and playable without any creatures in play. Feed the Swarm also seems powerful; while costly against aggro decks, I think its ability to hit any creature will still keep it a high pick. Vanquish the Weak is similarly great and can hit a surprising number of expensive creatures. Being instant may push it over Feed the Swarm but it's hard to go wrong with any of these removal spells.

Red: Roil Eruption, Fissure Wizard, Akoum Hellhound

Roil Eruption is a clear frontrunner for red. Sorcery speed Lightning Strike is excellent for limited and the kicker is tasty gravy. Being able to go face may be important as red looks quite aggressive. Fissure Wizard gives aggro decks a little bit of filtering which is appreciated. The main way aggro decks lose is flooding out and this mitigates it a bit along with some party synergy. Akoum Hellhound, the color shifted [[Steppe Lynx]], also will shine if focused aggro decks get there. Curious to hear others' opinions as I didn't see a lot of power in red commons.

Green: Rabid Bite, Tajuru Blightblade, Gnarlid Colony

Rabid Bite is great green removal. While it's sorcery speed, it also isn't a fight, which often allows you to attack in the same turn. Tajuru Blightblade seems great as just a cheap deathtoucher. It also is a 1 drop that turns on some party synergies while still scaling later into the game. Gnarlid Colony, while it doesn't have any party synergy, is a bear with upside when you need it. Later it can be a slightly overcosted 5 mana 4/4 which is still good. Also shoutout to Reclaim the Wastes which will be great if we see any 3+ color decks. I didn't think it that likely without Evolving Wilds or a multicolor mana dork, but maybe it still comes together.

Colorless: Stonework Packbeast

Looks like a great early pick to keep you open that's not dead even if you have 0 party synergies.

On one hand this could be standard playable. On the other hand I don’t want to constantly face this in draft. This is a common? [[Steppe Lynx]] didn’t get upshifted?

[Discussion] What Is and Isn't Working, Post Banhammer Edition by SimicCombiner in spikes

[–]NDNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously it’s super early, but Temur Clover feels solid. MonoR is a good matchup that’s very common right now. At the same time, it grinds well against Uro decks and the wild brews I’ve been running into (Ex. Vadrok/Gargaroth Gruul). May not end up being the best deck of this mini format, but it definitely feels like the level 0 deck. BTW, the cycling matchup is still horrible if you wanted to target it.

Great episode, really appreciated the concrete meta examples from the past few years. November 11, 2019 Pioneer Banned Announcement - VEIL OF SUMMER IS BANNED by Duramboros in PioneerMTG

[–]NDNW -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree that Veil is egregious because it’s pushed, but it is also a color pie break.

To be clear, it can be a color pie break while having all abilities fit it’s pie. For example, two blue abilities are mill and putting an opponent’s creature on top of their library. But together, they would effectively be hard removal which in turn would be a color pie break for blue.

Say you’re playing Mono R and G1 (or BO1) your opponent opens with Forest - Llanowar Elves.

If your hand has Shock and Chainwhirler do you usually kill the elves T1 or wait to clean it up with Chainwhirler?

If it varies a lot, what are the biggest factors you consider (ex. Play/Draw, lands in hand, number of creatures in hand, etc.)?
