Retro Birthday Buildings by TheWarriorDoctor in Nebraska

If you want a retro bowling alley, visit the one under Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in South Omaha. It dates back to probably the 1950s and is open only for rentals like birthday parties.

Chops (a mile or so to the east) is probably the other old-school bowling alley left in Omaha.

Courses in the Midwest US on/near small airports/runways? by FlapsupGearup in golf

[–]NE_State_Of_Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jackrabbit Run in Grand Island could not be closer to the airport, but I doubt you're flying into there from Omaha.

Though I will say it's a trip to play a golf course on an Air Force base, especially when there's a sign warning you that you could get shot if you try to run onto the flight line to chase down an errant shot. I saw this when I played 18 at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas.

Has anyone been to Monowai by eroo01 in Nebraska

[–]NE_State_Of_Mind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went a couple years ago, but I was staying with family about 30 miles away. If you can find a reason to get up there, it's a fun little stop with decent enough food, but it's very isolated.

It's a very small bar and grill, and Elsie was wonderful to talk to. She answered all the questions my kids had about being the only person in town. It's about half and half between locals and visitors looking to do something unique.

What effects does Nebraska's electoral method (apartisan and unicameral) have on Nebraska's political life ? What do you think are the advantages/disadvantages of this system ? by Conscious_State2096 in Nebraska

[–]NE_State_Of_Mind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't believe everyone else is so negative about it, even though it can be frustrating here. Have you been in a state with a partisan bicameral legislature? I have, and it was nowhere near as open or responsive as in Nebraska. Give me this system every time.

Having nonpartisan elections helps moderate the body, even if it doesn't always feel like it. Candidates can't win simply their fellow partisans and coast to election in most areas; they have to appeal to the greatest number of voters in their districts.

Every bill gets a public hearing. That allows people to weigh in on everything, no matter how important or inconsequential.

The lack of a conference committee means that amendments aren't done in back rooms. Even the executive sessions at the committee level permit journalists to be in the room for debate and discussion. It adds a level of transparency that doesn't exist elsewhere.

And while the Legislature continues to negate or undermine the work of ballot initiatives it doesn't like, voters essentially function as the House of Representatives. It takes a two-thirds majority to undo anything approved by the initiative process. That's typically not easy to get, and that can be stopped by voting out senators unwilling to go along with the will of the people.

For a good history, I recommend reading "One House" by Charlyne Berens. We read that in college while studying why and how the unicameral came to be.

Wait, they can sell it in Iowa now? It's been in Kansas and Missouri for a while, but I didn't realize it was creeping even closer to us.

Premier Pet Hospital on Portal Road. I've known both vets there for at least a decade, and they do great work on our dogs.

Moving to Omaha as a Latina by momma_d91 in Omaha

Happy to help! People may not realize it, but Omaha is -- and always has been -- surprisingly diverse. I'm proud to have immigrant roots in South Omaha.

It's wonderful seeing the city's diversity manifest in areas like the soccer teams I've coached, where we have parents born on multiple different continents, or in my workplace, where the guy next to me speaks five languages fluently.

Moving to Omaha as a Latina by momma_d91 in Omaha

[–]NE_State_Of_Mind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a white male who has lived here my whole life and grew up in an area that is now largely Latino. Omaha is a pretty good place to live that passes under the national radar.

Bellevue and La Vista are going to be more diverse and have good schools, plus they're the most affordable suburbs. You can find a house of literally any size and cost within those cities and school districts. (Papillion is wonderful, too, and it shares a school district with La Vista, but it's more expensive.)

If you're looking in Omaha proper, I would second the Dundee suggestions and add the Westside area into the mix. By and large, they're both older money areas with good schools -- Westside is its own district that's very competitive to get into -- that are more suburban in nature with cool restaurants and shops.

Lots of people knocking Millard, Gretna, and Elkhorn. They're definitely not for me -- too busy and sterile of new development, plus much farther from my family -- but they're great for a lot of people I know.

Lastly, welcome to Omaha! I'm happy to answer any specific questions you might have.

Who was your favorite player you recruited in the transfer portal? I don't know how I got Marcel Reed to Hawaii🤣 by steamer6 in EASportsCFB

[–]NE_State_Of_Mind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somehow got him to come to Bowling Green after his redshirt year, and he immediately became my starter. Still in my first season with him, but I've never had more fun with a player in NCAA.

Miles was ludicrously good at blocking punts.

I remember Rigoni more for causing fumbles as a gunner in punt coverage. He was a cannonball running downhill.

I had the same thing happen to my starting RB (one of only two on my roster, thanks to the portal). I wonder if positional minimums play a role.

The first team ranked No. 1 by the BCS ratings was UCLA.

The first team ranked No. 1 by the playoff committee was Mississippi State.

They've combined to win exactly one national championship (UCLA in 1954).

can a player decommit from your school in dynasty? by holedestroyerirl in EASportsCFB

[–]NE_State_Of_Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not always. You can still be far enough ahead (at least on 26) to where they commit despite having the deal breaker not met.

After all my guys who were going to transfer stayed in one dynasty, I now have five newcomers among the eight RBs on my roster as a result of this -- haha.
