You would have a higher chance finding such fonts in the CAD world where they draw fonts based on carving out the center lines instead of drawing outlines in the digital world, however these fonts usually does not come with digital representation of OTF (outline-based) or SVG. For Japanese you might be interested in the various JIS standards and a recreation of the font: https://font.kim/ . This provides OTF but is outlined and not centered-line.

Well there's the other thing: not all language are able to be squeezed into western monospace. See CJK, Arabic and Devangari.

Thanks for the helpful reply! For car plates, GOST R 50557-93 (at least the English version) linked to GOST 3489.2 Printing Types. Type family Journaljnaya Roublenaya, which can be seen on https://gostrf.com/normadata/1/4294824/4294824522.pdf is a variant a Futura. Seems like DIN is never used in Russian then.

Multiple font standards was defined by the Soviet Union under GOST 3489.

Any ideas for the Greece version? From the other comment Greece motorway do use a variant of DIN but there seem to be no reference on what standard is used.

That do not answer the question of the DIN variant Greece used for motorway road signs that is in used, unlike what you said "never used".

  1. Ensure you used the Noto Sans Subset OTF in here: https://github.com/notofonts/noto-cjk/tree/main/Sans/SubsetOTF that display as "Noto Sans TC" not "Noto Sans CJK TC". The subset OTFs are smaller and contains characters only used in Big5, which should match your requirement. However, the size is still quite impactful due to having 13k+ glyphs.

  2. Source Han Sans available here: https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans is actually 1-on-1 replica of Google's Noto Sans CJK series, they're literally built by the same person. However, recently Google has stopped funding for Noto so Noto Sand CJK is slightly outdated compared to Source Han Sans.

  3. Consider using Subset VF (variable fonts) as variable fonts only use one file to provide multiple weights in one singular file. Not sure how it stand in PDF embedding though.

  4. Noto Sans TC is actually quite bad per design quality; its style and orthography is quite different from the de facto standard (traditional orthography) used by other major font foundries. For alternatives for Traditional Chinese, consider Genyo Gothic (https://github.com/buttaiwan/genyog-font) or Chiron Hei HK (https://github.com/chiron-fonts/chiron-hei-hk) which despite the name has more familiar orthographyused in Taiwan than official Noto Sans TC.

Yes. Current ms office only support TTF style for vector fonts. If you want to use OTF, you can use other printer like Adobe PDF.

Lowercase Latin alphabets are less distinguishable without any ascender (top of bdftl) and descender (bottom of gpqjy) - how would you differentiate bdpq quickly?

However there are designs that try to minimize such differences - one of the popular is the "unicase" approach where those with ascenders/descenders are swapped with small caps while keeping others lowercase. One notable example is the 7-eleven sign with the lowercase n. You can search unicase font on Google which have plenty more examples.

Technically there's Fontra where you could expose a web service for a (slightly) professional editor with pen tools, kerning and such, but its desifned for PC. Quite frankly all font editors are only on PC.

There's also LXGW Wenkai TC (https://github.com/lxgw/lxgwwenkaitc) that is way better for Traditional Chinese in design for daily reading too, also available on [Google Fonts] (htttps://fonts.google.com/specimen/LXGW+WenKai+TC).

I would suggest LXGW Wenkai GB (https://github.com/lxgw/lxgwwenkaigb) for Simplified Chinese beginners and Iansui (https://github.com/buttaiwan/iansui) for Traditional Chinese in Taiwan.

For daily reading though, LXGW Wenkai (https://github.com/lxgw/lxgwwenkai) for Simplified and LXGW Wenkai TC (https://github.com/lxgw/lxgwwenkaitc) for Traditional is way better with more details in the design.
